Disembarked 12 hours ago.....

One day you wake up and realize that if you keep putting off all the things you want to do "someday," you will never do any of them. For us, cruising has always been on our vacation wish list, but it never quite made it to the top.... until now. And because this first cruise was so anticipated, we wanted it to be "legendary." And it was!

Before we booked, I did quite a bit of research on itineraries and ships and ports and food and service. One ship was recommended over and over again, The Legend. And now I understand why!

So let me share our experience and what I learned as a way to "pay it forward" to so many who wrote reviews and helped make our first cruise so special.

We left our house before sunrise on Friday morning. Since I was too excited to sleep, that was fine with me! We live about 7 hours from the port of Tampa and debated whether we should fly or dirve, but since I tend to overpack, we opted to drive in. We booked the Sleep and Sail package at the Tampa Wyndham Westshore. (This was really a no-brainer: we got hotel, parking for the week, and roundtrip transportation for a little more than just parking at the port.) We had a nice room with use of the pool. It is right across the street from the mall, so if you forget something important (I did), you can make a quick run. There are also some good restaurant options as well. The staff at the Wyndham is very accomoodating and you have your choice of shuttle times. We reserved a slot on the 10:30 van. And after another sleepless night, we met our fellow travelers in the lobby of the hotel.

We reached the port at 11:00 and got into the first of our short lines. (Our van driver told us that after 12:30, it is a madhouse.) As we entered the terminal, the security guard pulled me aside to "check" me. She looked through my carryon and my purse and then "wanded" me. In the meantime, people passed through with a nod and a hello. I guess I must have fit the female criminal profile. We reached the next security point, sent our bags through the scanner and finally reached the main check in line. Within 30 minutes, we were called to the counter, and issued our blue sign and sail cards....(Since we were first-timers, I called them our "virgin cards.") About 10 minutes later, they began embarkation by zones. And soon we were hearing the "ping ping ping" as passengers loaded the ship. Across the gangway we went and suddenly there we were, on board The Legend!

For someone who has never been on a cruise ship, that first moment of entering the atrium lobby is overwhelming. The lights, the music, the colors, the size....It is quite a bit to take in. (More on the decor later...) We were quickly escorted to the Lido deck where lunch was waiting for us. It was fresh and delicious! Lots of choices....

After lunch, we headed out to the aft bar of the Lido deck for a panoramic view of the city and a drink of the day. YUM! At 1:40, the rooms were ready and off we went to check out our home for the next week. We had a midship balcony stateroom. I unpacked our wine and sodas from our carry on and met Peireia, our AMAZING room steward. We were shocked to get our luggage delivered to us by 2:30! And I might add, all of the "essentials" that I had packed made it through.

By 3, we had finished the muster drill and were back on the deck for the sailaway party (and another DOD). As Tampa disappeared from view, the sky opened and it rained and rained and rained. It didn't dampen the spirits of anyone on board. We were ready to party!

Then, we were ready to explore. The ship's layout and size make it easy to find your way around, which was a plus for newbies like us. We visited the gym, the spa, the casino, and checked out all of the eating spots.

By early evening, the rain had stopped. We had unpacked, learned the ship and felt at home. Ahhh......

We chose Anytime Dining, which we loved. Yes, you don't get to bond with a table of strangers, but it also means that you don't HAVE to eat at a certain time (hungry or not). You can eat at a table for two or choose to eat with other "anytimers." We did both and enjoyed it. If you find a waiter you love, you can also request his/her table. It worked out great for us. Dinner was much better than I had expected and I had my first taste of....Chocolate Melting Cake!

After dinner, we walked around a bit, listened to some music. Completely exhausted, I went back to the cabin and there it was....my first towel animal! YAY! DH went off to the casino. About an hour later, he came in with a smile on his face. He had won a hundred bucks or so on the slots. Woo Hoo! (Rumor has it that the pay offs are better on the first and last nights.) We are off to a great start!

We had a drink on the balcony, watching the moonlight reflected on the water. Ah....so relaxed.....and as I slipped into my soft bed, feeling the gentle rocking of the ship, I drifted off to sleep.... Heavenly!

...to be continued....

Glad you enjoyed your first cruise.

We cruised on the Legend in May and loved. The only damper was that is poured down rain as we got to the Skyway bridge. We missed being on the top deck as we went under the Skyway bridge.

If I was an organized cruiser, I would have taken a cute little journal along so that I could have taken notes.....Didn't do that....You guys should.....So forgive me if I forget something like.....

THE SKYWAY BRIDGE!!!!! We went up to the very top deck as we sailed under the bridge. It is an amazing sight to see. And yes, for one very brief instant, you think that there is no way that the ship will pass under it..... WOW!

We'll be aboard the beautiful "Legend" in 6 days! We truly love the "Spirit Class" ships, and especially "Legend". Sure hate to lose her, so I guess we'll just have to book her several times before she leaves Tampa.
Thanks for the GREAT review!

Day 2 - At Sea

The sun is out and it is a beautiful day. I love it when the weather reports are wrong! The great thing about The Legend is its size. It is so easy to find your way around, and by Day 2 we felt at home.

Yes, the ship is over the top with urns and murals. It is Las Vegas glitzy, but that is also part of its charm. You enter a fantasy land when you board and you are tranported to beautiful exotic locales. Just relax and enjoy the ride! And if you get bored, you can have great fun looking at the pictures and guessing who all the "legends" are.

We had breakfast on the lido deck. The morning buffet offers pastries, fruit, and all the traditional choices (eggs, bacon, oatmeal, hasbrowns). I loved the omelet station....They will cook them any way you like them. I had two eggs over easy with grits most mornings...YUM! (Hey, I am a Southern girl!) I also want to say a word about coffee here. I am a coffee snob and was so worried that I would have to suffer through 7 days of lousy coffee that I actually wanted to take my little travel coffemaker. But I had read so many threads about the crack down on portable appliances, so I opted to leave it. I am glad I did: the coffee was awesome! I packed some of those 12 oz throw away coffee cups with lids. I was glad I did because I could fill it up and it stayed hot for a long time. Another piece of advice: get some of that Guava Passion fruit juice. It is only available at breakfast and is yummy. (If you bring the travel cups, fill one up and put it in the refrig in your cabin....more on that later)

I don't need a reason to shop, so off we went to check out the shops. DH had just bought a new watch, so when I saw him drooling over the watch case, I thought I was safe! WRONG! He fell in love with a state-of-the-art satellite driven, solar powered, diver's model. (Uh....He doesn't even dive!)I fell in love with a $10 shawl; what's happening here? Duty free is quite a good deal. Cigarettes are about $24 a carton, compared to $50 stateside. Alcohol specials were 2 for $34. You can satisfy all of your vices for under $60. DH went back to look at the watch.

We walked down to the casino and DH lost $20 in a matter of 3 minutes. Hmmmm...something to be said for loose slots on Day 1. DH had to make another trip to look at the watch. He was getting a little obsessed at this point.

We went up to check out our embarkation photo. It was cute! We knew that we would probably buy only one picture during the trip because when we get them home, you have to display them or they go into the never opened album, so we decided to wait until later. BIG mistake. That ended up being the best picture that we took and when we went to find it 5 days later, I had lost the locator card and they had no way to find it. Word to the wise: if you love the picture, buy it.

We had lunch on the Lido deck. We had planned to try the MDR for breakfast and lunch at least once, but the Lido was so convenient and we loved eating out on the deck with the sun and the ocean breeze. I had the grilled ruben and a salad....Yummy! (O.K. I swore I was not going to make this a food review; I am not doing so well, am I?)

We watched the hairy chest contest.... Dang, some of these guys are downright grizzly.

While on a walk to burn off lunch (did I mention the key lime pie???) we ended up on Rodeo Drive. You know where I am going, right? DH bought the watch! The use of the virgin Sign and Sail card gives you the feeling of not spending "real" money....Fun, but dangerous! (BTW.....Last night DH went online to check out his watch. He found it for sale in one place for almost 4 times what he paid for it, so I guess there are some bargains on the ship.)

We made a quick run to our cabin. Our wonderful steward Pereria had visited and magically cleaned our room, iced our wine and refilled our cooler. (I found the most amazing backpack cooler that folds absolutely flat to slip into the front pocket of the suitcase, but is deep enough to ice a bottle of wine or 6 cans of soda.) I could get used to being spoiled like this! I used our "essentials" to make us a drink. I bought two big thermal cups at dollar tree and these were great for drinks. At the end of the trip, I just threw them away to save space in the luggage and was only out 2 bucks! If you got some of that yummy guava passion fruit juice at breakfast, you can mix it with rum....Oh, yeah...The rest of the afternoon was spent lying in the sun, listening to music and relaxing some more. We are getting real good at just chilling.

Formal night and dinner in the MDR....Everyone is dressed up and the mood is festive. We took pictures and ate when we were hungry. (BTW...we never had to wait for an anytime table.) We sat with a lovely couple from Canada and enjoy making new friends. O.K.....I won't get into food porn here, but it is lobster and grilled shrimp night....so great! And I had another chocolate melting cake!

Off to see the jazz show. It was great! You honestly feel like you are in Vegas! We missed the comedy show, but I hear it was funny.

DH made a stop in the casino. I am doing the math in my head to figure out if he is ahead. Played $20, won $100, lost $20= $60. He sits at the $1 machine and my heart starts pounding. Can't he have just as much fun at the penny machine? Twenty minutes later, he is up $300 bucks and I convince him to quit while he is ahead. Woo Hoo on both counts!

Then we were off to our balcony for a nightcap. It looks like that will become our new cruise ritual.....

Off to my comfy bed...
