Activities on cruises from 6pm until 3am .....

Recommended Posts

Hi

I've never been on a cruise before and I'm researching whether I'd like to go on one. I'm from Sydney so I'd like to ask about cruises from Australia .......

I'm on medication that screws up my body clock so I am awake in the early hours of the morning ..... I don't go to bed until 3am.

Consequently I'd love to know what activities or rooms etc there are from 6pm each night .....

I posted this question on another post (here http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?p=29618278#post29618278 ) on the forum but I'd love to know what there is on Australian cruises.

Anything you could tell me would be really appreciated. I'm 45 so I'm not into dancing for hours and hours but I also don't want to spend too much time alone. eg. is the library open at 2am? I can handle being in the library alone for a while, but I'd hate to be somewhere on deck at 1am and the whole place is deserted with the exception of the disco .... know what I mean?

So any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

<by the way - I'm thinking that cruises are the only types of holidays that have things to do in the evening ....... are there other types of holidays that have people around and activities/things to do? if so then post here please!! thanks ....>

Well cruises out of Singapore or WA might be just right for you.

When it's 3 am there in Sydney it's only 1 am here.

The only trouble is the casino might not be open but there's always the bar, why don't you try the Pacific Sun wine and food cruise to see how you get on.

Seriously ..... is there much activity in the general lounge area (if that's what you call it) at 12am and 1am?

Are there many people just socialising, drinking and lounging around in common areas?

My DH and I are booked on a RCCL 14 night NZ cruise out of Sydney Jan 15. This will be our 4th RCCL cruise. We are night owls too - maybe not as late as you - and are up on deck playing mini golf, playing in the casino until the early hours of the morning. There are other adult activities later such as Comedians , live music and even Karaoke in many of the bars..

I believe the library is always open. There is always at least one cafe that is open 24 hours with available food and beverage.

We have never been totally alone on deck, no matter the hour.

We absolutely love cruising (I am only a few years older than you) and hope you enjoy it as well.

I am no expert, but I think a lot depends on which ship.

I've only been on two, but on both, there were evening shows in the theatre area. On Sun Princess, there were two different venues and both would have activities on, so there was always a choice.

That would usually go till about 11pm-11.30pm.

There were also little bars and things open, as well as a nightclub and I think they go till the wee small hours.

On Pacific Dawn, there were a lot of special party theme nights that they advertised as going into the early hours.

On Sun Princess there was a nightclub and also a couple of special party nights that didn't get going till late.

I know one of my friend was up till 3.30am those nights but we weren't.

Now as to library-it hasn't been my experience that libraries are open all hours at all. I found the hours very limited, especially on Pacific Dawn and be careful you get the books back as we read a notice that said they charge $50 to your account if they say you haven't returned it. That would be okay except the borrowing and returning system was primitive to say the least-they were writing on a notepad.(on Pacific Dawn, that is)

Buffets-on Sun Princess there was a limited buffet 24 hours. I didn't visit it overnight so not sure exactly what was available. It was a good buffet though when I did snack there.

Pacific Dawn buffet had quite limited hours, even during the day. For example, don't expect to find a snack at eg 3pm or after 10pm. That part was a downer for us.

I assume the casino sections would be open all hours but I don't really know.

My experience, as I say, is limited to those 2 ships and it may be different on other ships. Or even different compared to my time on them. I cruised in 2009 and 2010.

I should have added-I think a cruise would be a good holiday option for you.

There are a lot of things open till close to midnight, thenat least a few venues.

There are special party nights that go very late.

It will probably be that numbers of people thin out later on, but I would imagine there would be a few people around. There are always a few crew around.

I have been on other holidays eg in Jan, did a bus tour of NZ. They do offer evening excursions but basically, not till 3am.

About the only holiday where you would get that would be a self-guided one.

Or cruising.

PS I don't think the pools are open 24 hours though, so you probably couldn't count on a swim or anything.

I am a solo cruiser of similar age and I think you'll love cruising :D.

The pool deck bar on Pacific Pearl is open until midnight (not sure about other P&O's but they do shut very early evening on Rhapsody/Princess pool deck). From experience, you'll find there will be more late night activity on a South Pacific P&O cruise than any other. But saying that, our Rhapsody January cruise was always buzzing to the wee small hours.

There's always people hanging about the smoking area for a chat at any time of the day or night :p

And you will never eat alone if you don't want to and from here friendships and people to hang out are forged (as well as your CC rollcall). Personally I would avoid Princess and Celebrity for your first cruise unless you have a huge rollcall to mix and mingle with.

As for other travel, if you google singles travel, there is a heap of companies that organise trips for solo travellers (not the dating type either). I think they are great especially if you going to far off lands on your own, but the downside is, if you don't like your group, your stuck with 'em unlike a cruise where you can move away without being noticed :D

I agree..do try and eat in the restraunt as it is a great way to meet people..the buffet can be a tad unpersonal in my opinion as most people are there for a quick feed and off they go.

What is a "cc rollcall"?

And what is so different about Princess and Celebrity that you'd recommend I not take them for my first cruise? Are there mostly couples on these liners?

Thanks again everyone ....... thanks VERY much

Hi welcome to the wacky world of cruise fanatics ... you asked about cc roll calls..when you decide on which cruise is for you..have a look under roll calls "p & O Australia" or "Princess" for a roll call for the date of your chosen cruise..start posting..join in any tours they organise and pretty soon you will have a whole heap of new friends to share your cruising experience with..

Hi Scurvy Dog! As other people have said, the buffet upstairs on deck 14 will always be available. During the wee hours of the morn, if you are lucky, there will be the desserts (as well as savoury foods) available, and if you are more lucky you can ask the chef to make something specifically i.e. an omelette etc which worked for a friend of mine. In terms of general activity late at night, it depends which ship and when. The second sitting show will finish much later and some bars will be open for a very long time with live music going quite late as well. When you find friends onboard (CC or otherwise), I would often find myself talking in an empty bar with friends until about 3am or so and I felt perfectly safe doing so. Some pools may also be open 24/7. I hope you choose to cruise, it is an amazing way to travel and be safe super late at night. Also, on Princess, you will have 24 hour tv stations with various movies (new to DVD release) which might be another way to kill time, some ships' room service will charge a small fee if it super late. Good Luck!
