Lodging before Au/NZ cruise

Recommended Posts

We will be flying in to Sydney before our cruise and will spend 3 nights before and one night after and are looking for a good hotel for two women to stay at. We want to do tours from the hotel (do they have tour desks at the hotels) and want them to be convenient as well.

Also would like recommendation as to tour operators to contact or websites for tour information and what are must see highlights in and near Sydney?

As a EX- Sydneyite, now living in Qld - I can't answer specific details about hotels in Sydney (assumedly close to the ship's embarkation point) - except in generalities. There are quite a number of good hotels in Sydney - and they do have tour desks. Also, the area called CIRCULAR QUAY in Sydney (which has the cruiseship Overseas Passenger Terminal and Sydney Harbour Bridge on one side - and the Opera House on the other side) is a VERY tourist oriented area and there are MANY day tour agencies located there. You will find more than enough suitable tours there to occupy you for a few days.

For me - Sydney is all about it's Harbour and the things that go with it. If you took away the Harbour (and perhaps also the beach areas on the eastern side of the city), there would not be much of interest left!! :) From a tourism perspective, the mountains (called the Blue Mountains) to the west are very well patronised - as are the vineyards (well to the north, 100 klms) of Sydney are also famous.

It is very difficult to be specific - without knowing what your interests are, how much you are prepared to spend, etc. For example, you may (or not) fancy a night at the Opera?? If so, then you need to be advised that you would need to pre-book tickets for that.

So - if you would like to be a bit more specific - I am sure you will get some good advice here.

A website like this will give you ideas http://www.sydney.visitorsbureau.com.au/tours/

There are several accommodation clusters in Sydney. I suggest you stick to areas near the Harbour. Your ship will dock at either the Overseas Terminal at Circular Quay or Wharf 5 near Darling Harbour. This is a link to a map showing both areas with hotels marked - not interactive so you will need to google the hotel names to check them out. The OT is at Circular Quay West on the map and the Darling Harbour Cruise Terminal is marked.

There is a wider range of economy priced (though not cheap - it is Australia!) hotels around the Darling Harbour area. Prices tend to be higher on the Harbourside but this area is better for walking around the Rocks area and harbour foreshores. The Holiday Inn is popular on that side and the Novotel and Mercure group hotels on the Darling Harbour side. If you are looking for budget accommodation you will need to look further afield to the area around Central Railway or Darlinghurst. Try the Wotif site - one of the bargain hotel deal sites in Oz.

Have a wonderful cruise and enjoy your stay!

Cool Cruiser

I have noted it for our future needs. It sounds good and worth checking out.

I just goggled their site

Hope this helps.

B&B

Can recommend a hotel just next to China Town. It is called The Novotel Rockford Darling Harbour at 17 Little Pier Street. (paid $ 279 AUD for two nights) In the same street is the monorail with the loop around Darling Harbour, the Ho Ho bus & Paddy's Market.

We asked for a view out on the square, the room will be small for American standards, but it has a spacious bathroom and it is quiet at night. There is a more dearer Novotel at Darling Harbour itself.
