Getting from the ship to the zoo in San Diego

What is the easiest/cheapest way to get from the ship to the zoo in San Diego? It's been years since I've been there and I've only gotten there by car. Walking is an option if it isn't too far. We will be on the Monarch in Aug and have a day in San Diego.

It is about 4 miles, uphill, to the zoo. Unless you have that type of time, I would recommend taking a cab. Probably would run you about $15 each way at the most. If you do, ask the driver to go up Laurel. You can save a little by having him drop you off at the Museum of Art in Balboa Park and walk to the zoo from there (about 1/3 mile).

You could also take a city bus, but this will take you longer. The bus will run you $2.25 per person and take about 1/2 hour. You can catch the 7B 69th Street & University bus or take the 7 La Mesa bus from Broadway pier and get off at Zoo place,

Here is the website for the zoo. If you have a group of more than 2 people, you may want to consider joining the zoo as a member, as this gets you a pass and 2 free guest passes (or 2 passes and 2 guest passes if you join as a couple). Children's memberships are even a better deal.

The old town trolley stops at the cruise port and the zoo. You can get on the trolley to get a tour of the city. They even have a two day pass for the trolley and entrance to the zoo, cheapest I've seen. This is what we are buying for our trip to San Diego at the end of our cruise in October, because the trolley also stops at our hotel. No rental car needed for our first two days in SD.
