Rome to Nice in Oct. Cold?

This will be our first time on a Windstar Cruise (Wind Surf). We will be winding up a month vacation through Italy, and are considering the seven day cruise from Rome to Nice, France. A little concerned about the weather this time of year - Oct 1 thru the 8th?

Also the wife wants to know how formal or casual is the expected dress?

Is it usually "windy" on deck, or just a slight breeze?

Thanks, Mike:)

While I haven't been on a cruise that first week of October, I have been in the area that time of year. You can have beautiful weather and it is generally before the rainy season. But that is based on averages and weather can be very fickle. For example, January in New England is generally very cold with snow on the ground, but today it is in the mid to high 50's. Not typical, but not the first time either. I'd think you would be fine, but bring some sweaters and such for night on deck.

As for the dress, you will not see anyone in gowns or the such. Popular dress for men are khakis or slacks and a golf shirt or Tommy Bahama type shirt. Women are generally in sundresses, capri, etc. Some balzers here and there and we didn't see ties except for the night we were in Monaco. If you plan to go to the casino in Monte Carlo you technically need a jacket and tie, but we saw many without. What you are packing for the rest of the trip would likely work.

Hope that helps some.

We were on Wind Surf the first week of November 2004 Rome to Nice. Your itinerary is very similar to what ours was then. The weather was mild. We actually had low 70's in Rome, but on average I would say it was mid to upper 50's even low 60's a couple of days. We did have some days when the wind picked up and the temperature really dropped so it's good to dress in layers and take a jacket/windbreaker in port. We really loved Portofino and Monte Carlo! We also took the bus from Portofino to Santa Margherita Ligure to stroll around and it was quite nice. Enjoy your trip!

A month can make a big difference, so November weather is likely much colder on average than the first week of October. In looking at average temps for the first week in October in several of your ports it is generally high 60's to mid 70's.

Pack some layers, but you may not need them.

Looks like we'll be following you as we're doing the Nice to Rome cruise the following week. This will also be our first Windstar cruise and we're looking forward to it and the information we're getting on this site. I've seen information posted on cabin locations. On the Windsurf our itinerary is showing us a Cabin 101, deck 1. Does anyone have any watch outs for certain cabins or locations. thanks,
