BJS - used your link but didn't see either the Star P or the Millie on the Barcelona schedule for 13 September

AJPack - we're considering the 25th sailing. Why did you pick the 13th? just curious

I liked the itinerary better---I read somewhere that the museums are closed on Monday in Florence, and with the Venice to Barcelona itinerary, that is the day for Florence. Also, I thought it may be a little warmer at that time than at the end of Oct. and the beginning of Nov. I've been researching private tours--guess I'll book some soon. I just hope there are others on this board who can go along so it won't be so expensive.

BJS - ah HA! I see why I didn't see the Star - I was ONLY looking at ships coming into the port on the 13th. Didn't think about there being some that might be there overnight from the day prior! Thanks for enlightening me!

ajpack - I see. I picked 10/25 over 10/1 b'c it was $90pp cheaper (didn't price 10/13). I picked the 10/25 itinerary over 10/13 b'c it had an extra sea day for "sightseeing recovery" as well as liking the fact that we'd start in Venice - which was my main reason for wanting this itinerary. (I didn't want to be too exhausted to be able to enjoy it if it were at the end of the trip. LOL) Plus I was counting on the cooler weather. I won't be booking mine until after our return from the Med. (Royal Princess) due to cash flow issues so I might just decide on 10/13 after my return. You do make a VERY good point about the museums being closed on Monday in Florence. Fortunately, I hope to be able to do that on this year's trip there so I "think" I'll have that aspect out of the way. I can let you know how I make out with trips in Rome, Florence, and Barcelona as those 3 stops are on my itinerary for this year. (Just remind me in late September.)

BJS - any clue why my countdown clock doesn't display like yours???

Really don't know why but this is the web link I used to set my clock up. I just put the information in and then cut and paste to my signature and it works color and all.

ajpack - looks like the "heaviest" part of the 10-13-05 itinerary is upfront. Since we'll already have done Rome & Florence once, perhaps we could 'handle' this intensity in the beginning of the cruise so we're considering this sailing instead of 10-25 b'c of the issue with the 10-25 sailing being in port in Florence when the museums are closed. Only concern is Rome on a Sunday?!!?? Not sure what that'll be like. (But we plan on doing the Vatican this year so perhaps if we steer clear of the V we'll be ok.) Still haven't made up my mind - also considering Peter Dielman's riverboat cruise that goes into Paris. Will make up my mind by the end of September (after I return from our Royal Princess cruise). Stay in touch -

usavvy2...I don't know about Rome on a Sunday. I read somewhere that the Vatican Museum is closed. Is the Pieta in the museum? I've already booked Revelation Tours for Villefranche, driverinrome for Florence, Rome, and Naples, and Spiros for Athens. I wanted to get a head start. We leave next week for Alaska on the Mercury. I need a vacation!

I see you're going to Venice in October. Has anyone explained what happens in Venice during fall and winter months to you? (your travel agent should have)

Venice has major problems with being too close to water level and this results in St. Marks Square and area around it flooding during low tide during fall and winter. This doesn't happen in summer. They actually have to erect wooden sidewalks up about 2 feet all around St. Marks Square. Now, I've been there both in summer and fall and seen it both ways. If this might be your only trip to Venice, go in summer! Now, with the change in tide the water abates and the shopkeepers sweep the remaining water away and St. Marks in back in business.

Now, I realize this just might not matter to you, but I thought you should be forewarned.

I understand the problem begins in Fall - I was there around the 23rd of October and the water problems were in full flower. Now, I'd been there before in May and there isn't any problem at that time of year so I wasn't too disappointed and I was certainly forwarned about it but the elevated wood sidewalks and climbing up and down on them certainly take away from the romance of the place.

I HATE being the only person telling you this, but your travel agent really should have advised you of this so you'd know what the city is like at that time of year. We simply took a walk into other areas of the city and came back a few hours later and the tide had turned and the shopkeepers were sweeping the rest of the water away and they move the wood sidewalks and business is back to normal.
