Great pictures. This will be our first time to Costa Maya. Were you able to just get off the boat and walk to the pool area? What about the beach area is close to the dock or is a taxi ride required? We are trying to decide whether to do the all inclusive beach break for $35 or save the money and just do our own thing when we get off the ship.

We were in Costa Maya last March and did our own thing and loved it. the pool area is right there at the ship. We took a five minute cab ride to the beach at Majahual, which we loved. There are several spots there for lunch and plenty of beach chairs. No need, in my opinion, to pay for a shore excursion.

When you walk to the pier, there's a big shopping area and right in the center is a shallow (but good-sized) pool with a swim-up bar. We were also told you could walk to beaches, but it didn't seem very nice.

If you exit out the back of the shopping area you'll find vans that you can hop in for $3pp and you'll be taken to a crappy-looking area, in front of the Hotel Mahahual. Go through the hotel's courtyard and you'll exit onto a beach and tons of places to eat and shop. You can just walk onto the beach and sit in a lounge chair and/or tables with chairs and unbrellas and spend the day. It's not that PRETTY but it's free and there's food, sand, water and beer!! :)
