On the Carnival board they are talking how the Captain has been evacuated from the ship, no direct answers. However it has been reported that the ship had a minor collision w/RCCL ship in PV. They are reporting that the Splendor will be arriving late tomorrow and leaving late in the evening. I have heard nothng here about an accident with an RCCL ship. Hope all is well with the Captain on the Splendor.

wow, saw this by chance and we will be on the Splendour (Transatlantic from Lisbon to Brazil) the day after tomorrow. Any more info on this will be appreciated (and if just to give us something to talk about on the Transatlantic ;-) - here's the link to our Roll Call: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1012137

And here is the one for the current sailing, no activity since 4 days before the cruise though, for obvious reasons ;-)

Ups, strike that - just found the "original" info (http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1097664), and there's a Carnival Splendour as well, and that's the one that was involved. From the post I read it seemed like the RCI ship involved was the Splendor. Sorry for spreading false rumours.

No problem vkuehne :D I was reading your post and wondering how the Carnival ship was going to get from Mexico to Lisbon in 4 days! :D Have a great cruise.

I am curious about the circumstances of this rumored small collision in PV and the condition of the captain. :)

this is another dirty rotten low blow by that second rate company. i cannot belive they would resort to physically damaging one of RCCL's ships. They are such fools. This will only make people more sympathetic to RCCL and want to sail on a ship that doesn't crash into other ships

The collision was the Carnival Legend and an RCCL ship in Cozumel last month.

This current incident concerns only the Captain of the Splendor being removed from the ship by medical evacuation. There has been no collision in PVR..... The only place this "collision" has been mentioned is by a poster on the Carnival board who is not on the ship. There is nothing anywhere in any news other than the Captain being evacuated.

I think you need a tranquilizer. What a ridiculous thing to say.

Here's the info from somebody actually on the Carnival ship. It was the Radiance that was hit. I would like to see pictures of the damage.

We are on the Splendor right now. We are hauling a$$ to get back to Long Beach. Our estimated arrival is 1:00 P.M. We are rocking and rolling more than I have experienced on any of my previous 10 cruises (Yes! We are Platinum!!).

In Puerto Vallarta we hit the Radiance of the Seas as they were spinning around into port. It dented the front of the Radiance. Nobody was hurt.

About 3 hours out of Cabo we turned back because Captain Salvatore Rassello had a heart attack. Captain Georgio Pagano got on in Cabo to releive Rassello. Apparently there is a few days of overlap when there is a Captain change. Captain Pagano took command and announced that his very good friend, Captain Rassello had a heart attack. He was very emotional both during the evening announcement and in the morning during the Debark talk thing.

When we got on it was a mess because there was a medical emergency on the prior cruise and they did not get in until 10:00 A.M. As usual beaple were unhappy.

I can't wait for the moaning tomorrow. I plan on telling people "Yes, they should have let the Captain die so you could make your flight!"

Captain Rassello is doing well and will be in the hospital for a while according to Captain "Get out!" Pagano.

Cheers!

Tony B

The accident and the Captains heart attack were not connected. The 'bump' was on Wed in Puerto Vallarta and the medical emergency was Friday after we left Cabo.

The 'bump' was when we were moving into port. The Radiance was already docked along with the Ossterdam. The Celebrity Infinity came in later and was anchored and tendered. When we were spinning around to our final resting place the Splendor aft hit the bow of the Radiance.

I will post a picture when I get home. It was no big deal.

Tony

OK, a little bump.........In the Nautical world that is NOT OK especially on a Cruise Ship with 3000 plus passengers. I would almost guarantee there was a lot of Stress on this Captain returning back to Long Beach. Have you ever did a scratch on the New Car and wondered how the Spouce was going to React, This might have been in this Captains mind.

Our prayers for the Captain and his family and hope he will be alright.

Illmaxict, your comment was cruel.

I don't think anyone wishes that the Captain does not recover. The thread started with word of a collision between the ships and the Captain being evacuated. Illmaxict comments were posted early in the thread, long before any mention of possible heart attacks. After the Legend/ Enchantment collision a few months ago, and knowing the animosity between several loyal Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruisers, I think the comment was probably in jest and not out of line. I don't think it is fair to judge a post in a thread based on it's contents without considering when it was made. If one cruise ship hits and damages another, as long as no one is injured, even if the damages were in the millions of dollars, the fodder for conversation would be understandable. Even John Heard made light of the Enchantment/Legend incident. That being said, knowing the Captain was evacuated for medical reasons, joking about the incident now might be seen as less than caring.

IA-- I heard "collision in PV" and "captain had a heart attack" and I can't help but think they are related. I do wonder, though, if it was the Captain who was steering the ship at the time of the collision or a harbor master (or someone else). Either way, he must have been under an insurmountable amount of stress following the 'bump'.
