Mazatlan- Stone Island

Recommended Posts

Just got back from the Sapphire Princess. We decided to do our own Stone Island trip. It's very easy and we saved a lot of $$$ doing it ourselves. When you get off the ship, walk through all of the vendors, past the taxis and take a left when you reach the road. Walk along the sidewalk about 3-4 blocks. The road will come to a T (to the right the road goes off, to the left is the Mexican Navy). Cross the street and walk straight down the dirt road. You will see a yellow booth where you can buy tickets to Stone Island. They are $2 per person round trip. When you arrive, you can walk to the left to all of the restaurants. We initially did this. The water is shallow for a long ways out but the sand is very silty. There are vendors if you want to shop while you sit in your beach chair. We decided to take the advice of another cruise critic member and try going to the other side (this would mean you would take a right when you arrived at the island). Pizza Benji's is down this way. Eli came out and greeted us as soon as we arrived. For us, this was a much better choice. It was by no means fancy- but the snorkeling was good, the water was calm in the cove which was perfect for my 7 and 9 year old. There were tons of shells for them to sift through. Also, the sand is better there. The silt from the other side of the island ruined my daughter's suit. It won't come out. Anyways, the pizza was great, the drinks were cheap. We rented a kayak. In all, we drank 8 beers, 4 sodas, 2 pizzas and a couple of quesadillas and rented a kayak for $55. Not bad! Eli is a Southern Californian who has moved down to Stone Island. He was very hospitable and friendly. I would reccommend going to see him for those of you who are looking for something off the beaten path. There was only one other group of cruisers there with us so it was quiet and peaceful.
