Cruise4Sunshine Posted February 4, 2010 #1 Share Posted February 4, 2010 For those who love to walk and meet new people, this is a fun activity for a cause. On a Sea Day, there is a 5K walk around the promenade deck. Donation is $15 charged to your account, per person, proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. You get a t-shirt, wrist band, water, snacks, encouragement, and a great feeling inside. My daughters and I did the walk in the Meditteranean, what a memory of our vacation. For Details: http://www.hollandamerica.com/assets/about-best-cruise-lines/OnDeckfortheCureFactSheet.pdf I did the walk on my 2008 Maasdam cruise. I walked in honor of my close friend Denise. She is winning against breast cancer everyday!! I purchased two donations. One for me and one for her. On the day of the walk, it was a nice group doing the walk. There was music playing. Some people walked fast and others at a slower pace. Those who were lounging in deck chairs would cheer when we passed them. On Saturdays, Denise and I wear our pink wrist bands at work. :D I tell anyone who know someone with breast cancer to join the walk in their support!! Rare Copper10-8 Posted February 4, 2010 #3 Share Posted February 4, 2010 Great cause! Have done it several times - it's at your own pace, not a race! They serve really cool pink lemonade afterwards;)
Krazy Kruizers Posted February 4, 2010 #4 Share Posted February 4, 2010 Thay have been doing this for a few years now -- great cause. I posted this article back in Sept 2008 from HAL's website: Holland America Line Program Surpasses $1 Million Raised for Susan G. Komen for the Cure® SEATTLE, Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Holland America Line has surpassed the million-dollar mark in contributions raised for Susan G. Komen for the Cure® via its On Deck for the Cure program, earning it a place on Komen's prestigious Million Dollar Council. The line will celebrate the milestone this week with special receptions and recognition on the ships in its fleet and at its corporate headquarters in Seattle. Since the program began in 2006, On Deck for the Cure has raised nearly $1.1 million in support of breast cancer research. Noting the success of the ship-based program -- where ship guests make donations for walking laps around the deck -- Richard D. Meadows, CTC, executive vice president, marketing, sales and guest programs, said the company has recently extended their contract with Susan G. Komen for the Cure to continue the On Deck for the Cure program in the years to come. "We're overwhelmed with the spirit and generosity of our guests," said Meadows. "On every cruise, our guests take time from their holiday to raise money to help fight this disease. Holland America Line is proud to be a vehicle for this most worthy cause." Meadows noted that in 2007 one charter group on board the ms Maasdam turned out nearly 800 participants, smashing the previous Holland America Line single walk record of 349 walkers, and the 2008 Grand World Voyage on the ms Amsterdam raised more than $50,000 in its fund-raising walks. "We are very appreciative of the contribution goals set by Holland America Line," said Katrina McGhee, vice president of marketing, Susan G. Komen for the Cure. "Through leveraging the support of staff and guests alike, the company has reached the million dollar mark in less than two years. This is quite unique and an accomplishment achieved by only a few companies in our Million Dollar Council." On Deck for the Cure Details Holland America estimates that more than 80,000 guests have participated in more than 1,000 walks on Holland America Line cruises worldwide since the program began in 2006. Participants pledged $15 or more, then simply put their sea legs to good use and walked around the ship's deck for a total of five kilometers. Depending on the ship, guests walk up to 12 laps to reach 5K. Each participant receives an On Deck for the Cure T-shirt and On Deck for the Cure pink wristband as well as an invitation to a pink lemonade party following the walk. Carnival Corporation & plc Embraced Program in 2007 Buoyed by the success of Holland America Line's On Deck for the Cure program, last year, Carnival Corporation & plc extended the year-round donation program to four other Carnival brands. The combined 65 ships from Carnival Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises, Seabourn Cruise Line, and Costa Cruises Florida-based vessels, along with Holland America Line, provide an opportunity for guests to participate in the walks and other activities. On Deck for the Cure, presented by the Holland America Line Foundation, builds upon Holland America Line's existing corporate giving programs which contribute millions of dollars each year in cash sponsorships, in-kind shipboard events, free and reduced-fare cruise donations for nonprofit fundraising events, United Way participation and other philanthropic activities. This summer, Holland America Line will host the Seattle Komen Affiliate's annual Survivor Celebration luncheon for more than 400 guests onboard the ms Oosterdam. The Holland America Line Foundation donates 75%, or a minimum of $11.25, of each $15 donation to Komen for the Cure. The remaining 25% covers a portion of the program costs. Randyk47 Posted February 4, 2010 #5 Share Posted February 4, 2010 We do the walk every cruise in memory of my wife's mother. She survived breast cancer but lost the battle to a cancer related to ovarian cancer. The walk is a great cause and fun to do.
bbwex Posted February 4, 2010 #6 Share Posted February 4, 2010 I have volunteered in Pittsburgh for 18 years now. I have never seen the race nor have I been able to participate. It will be great to actually be able to walk in one!
Iris5383 Posted February 4, 2010 #7 Share Posted February 4, 2010 I've walked this on just about every cruise. It is a great cause. A tip though, register as soon as you can at the front desk. By the time it's posted in the daily news they will have probably run out of tee shirt sizes M & L and may have run out of wristbands. At least that's been my experience. fgrsk8r Posted February 4, 2010 #8 Share Posted February 4, 2010 That's great - thanks for posting!!! My mom (who will be on the cruise, but is walking disabled) has been battling other cancers for a few years now, so I'll just walk for her (even if it's not Breast Cancer) - maybe my dad will walk with me.... since it's at your own pace ! We'll be on the Oosterdam in March :-)
MrsMuir Posted February 4, 2010 #9 Share Posted February 4, 2010 It's one activity we never miss, though it wasn't advertised well on one of our cruises. The t-shirt is a great way to advertise for the Komen Foundation and Holland America at the same time. I wear it on Fridays with my blue jeans at work during warmer weather. 2Labs2Many Posted February 5, 2010 #10 Share Posted February 5, 2010 My husband and I are planning a lot of ways to stay in shape during our cruise to Hawaii in two weeks, and we are really excited about joining in on this walk both to support a great cause and as a little bit of "forced" motivation to exercise. Sail & Rail Fan Posted February 5, 2010 #12 Share Posted February 5, 2010 My husband and I both walked in honor of my cousin Shelby who has been fighting breast cancer for the past 3 years. We had someone take a picture of both of us walking and mailed them to her when we got home. She really appreciated it!!!!!!!

For example, will it be done on the sea day we have on our 14 day Alaska cruise on the Amsterdam? Every HAL cruise has a Walk for the Cure (unless it has to be canceled due circumstances beyond their control, like extreme weather). It's usually held on a sea day near the end of the cruise.
