Just back from Radiance 1-16 to 1-23

Recommended Posts

Just got back from the Radiance and had a great time. It started off with 35 foot waves leaving Florida, but got better after that!

All in all it was a wonderful trip. The service was fantastic, both in the dining room and our cabin. The only problem we had was we had a huge aft balcony and we were told we couldn't get any extra chairs or loungers (even after pre-tipping the cabin attendant). Our plan was to have adult beverages on our balcony every night before dinner, but we couldn't do that, so we went to Plan B!

Embarkation was a breeze, and we were on the ship in 20 minutes. We got to the pier at 10:45 and waited about 10 minutes until they opened the doors. Easiest check-in we've had in 9 cruises.

Disembarkation was easy also. Platinum and Diamond members waited in the Cascades dining room until your color was called and after we got our luggage, we got a porter and were taken right to the taxi line up.

They've changed the dining room times and menu for lunch. The dining room wasn't open for lunch on port days, so we went to the Windjammer when we were onboard. They also have the same menu every day for lunch with a different special dish of the day. For the most part, everything on the menu was delicious!

We went to some of the nightly entertainment and they were all very good. especially the comedians and the Piano Man show.

I saved the Compass so if there are any questions, I'd be happy to answer what I can.

Geema, what wonderful aft cabin did you have? What was there as far as chairs and loungers? Sounds like a wonderful embarkation, we will be sailing in 5 days in an aft cabin. :)

Geema, can you tell me if they had the "Smart Casual" dress of the evening?

Been reading that is has been eliminated from some ships. I always liked it better than casual. Casual was ok for port days but I always figured on sea days one had time to dress a little.

Thanks.

jebl - We had cabin # 9260. It was great. Only wish we could have talked our cabin attendant into more chairs. It was absolutely huge and the view is to die for. They had two chairs and a small table. Would have really liked a lounger! You'll love your aft balcony.

over the edge - Yes, they had smart casual on Thursday night. Some people really differed on their idea of what smart casual meant though!

We were also on the Radiance 1/16...Had aft balcony 1602....The room steward also told us that there were not chaise lounges available for the balcony....I offered a big tip for a chair, but he said he would get in trouble...He did tell me I wouldn't get in trouble, so I went to the pool deck that night and "borrowed" a chair...Had it there all week.

My DH wanted to borrow a lounger, but I was afraid they'd make him walk the plank if he got caught! Wish he had now. Next time.

We had 1100 (the other aft JS on deck 10) in Alaska, and we had two loungers plus the chairs & tables. Maybe there's so much demand for the loungers in the Caribbean that they don't have them, but that seems pretty cheap to me. I would borrow one, too!

When I was on the Mariner last year I had 7688. the very large aft corner balcony. When I got on the ship I had 2 lounge chairs, 2 regular chairs and a table. Well the second night while we were at dinner our room attendent went into my room and took the lounge chairs. I know this because a girl in my party happened to be going down the hall and saw him. when I questioned him about it the next day he told me that we weren't suppose to have lounge chairs on the balconies. I was a little miffed at the time but as time went on I realized that someone probably tipped him well so he stole mine. I wish I had done something about it then. I never saw him the rest of the trip. I swear he hid on me the rest of the trip. Needless to say I only tipped him what was expected and not a dime more. I really wish now that I didn't let him get away with it. Oh well I'll know better next time.

we also had an aft cabin, deck 8 and could not get a lounger either. room steward said it was for security reasons. quick poll, who got seasick sunday night, my husband did, and I got really dizzy, so we both skipped dinner. by the way, I think the staff was the best we have ever had, but you really had to run for the elevators, they were spaced far enough apart that by the time you got to the one going up or down, it was gone. Weird that you didn't have the two lounge chairs. We were in 1604 recently and had two regular and two loungers and a small table. Sorry you didn't have the same. Sounds like you had a good time though!

Security reasons? Whew, that's really a stretch of the imagination. ;) Instead of Battle of the Sexes, imagine Battle of the Lounge Chairs. :D

jrm9999 - Yes we stopped in St. Croix. We got there around 8:30 p.m. and left at 12:30 am. They suggested you not go onshore alone and to only take the shuttle that is provided to the town and stay within those boundries. We didn't get off that night.

SCOOP - We did Eastern itinerary and here are the theme nights:

Sunday - casual

Monday - Formal

Tuesday - casual/50's-60's

Wed. - casual/Caribbean

Thurs. - Smart casual

Friday - Formal

Sat. - - casual

For the life of me I can't remember which night had Italian selections and American selections. They all became a blur. Hopefully someone else will remember.

Boat123 - We didn't get sick the first night, but noticed empty tables on the first seating and heard second seating had lots missing. Yes, those elevators had you sprinting to get them! By the end of the cruise we placed each of us on either end so we could hold the elevator - otherwise it was gone before you'd get there. We had the best waiters and cabin attendants I can remember. The waiters for breakfast and lunch in the dining room were also excellent. The Guest Relations personnel were all very friendly and very helpful, also.

The Compass shows that the hours for the casino that night were from 6:15 pm - late. Didn't go into it personally that night, so I couldn't say for sure, but it looks as if it was open.

Thanks for the response. Glad you had a good time. This will be my first time on the Radiance and I feel like I know the ship inside and out. Also - first time with a balcony. I will be bringing some wine and Margarita mix with me to enjoy cocktails on the balcony. I wish it was tomorrow :)

Cruisin Together - You will love this ship. Our friends had a balcony on Deck 8 and left their door open to the balcony all night. They said the balmy weather and quiet seas made it very enjoyable! The Margarita mix sounds perfect for your first balcony. (Unfortunately, you get hooked on them and have to have one every time you cruise!!!)

When do you go, by the way?

I've seen many a longe chairs wallking themselves down the ship's hallways towards specific cabins.

Geema - we sail on March 13th. We are also on deck 8 - cabin 8082. I am out here every day reading something new. We have been on RCCL before , 2 NCL, and 2 Carnivals. This is our first 7 day and thought we would live it up with a balcony & no kids. We are going with some friends and it usually becomes a competition of who has the highest bar bill at the end.

When are your friends going?

Leaving on MOS on 2-6 but have our first aft on Radiance for Alaska in Sept. Thanks for the lesson on making friends with the traveling loungers, it may come in handy. Probably isn't a problem in Alaska but it's good to know. If what I read is true, I'll never settle for anything but aft again.

Cruisin Together - Our friends were on the Radiance with us. They had cabin 8616 and it was very nice. You will really love this ship. Those bar bills do tend to show up in your final billing!

peggyy - This was our first aft cabin and really loved it. We will try to get one from now on. As for the loungers on the balcony, I guess I'd try to find one roaming the halls!

Hi,

We were also on Radiance that week (and the week before :D ). This was our first Royal Caribean cruise and we loved it. Anybody else think that Fredi who was the bartender at the Champagne bar was just such a nice guy? I must say all the crew were great but he deserves a special mention as did our waiter and assistant waiter. Can't say I have a lot of time for our head waiter. We didn't even know who he was until our last night!

BTW, we didn't get seasick on the sail from Miami, though lots of folk did. Guess we were lucky!

Hi there,

I was on the beautiful Radiance the week before also. Neither my husband nor I got sick. But boy oh boy was the boat ever rocking!!

We had a balcony aft cabin on deck 9. It was just enough room for two.

Take care,

Peggy
