We don't all have the choice of flying Southwest to many locations. ;)

Southwest has just started a presence here but (presumably) will add new cities.

Maybe this will keep people from trying to carry-on everything plus the kitchen sink and try to stuff it into the overheads! Charge MORE for the carry-ons and more people will check bags that SHOULD be checked!

You're right about this... I'm alternately amused and dusgusted by some of the carry on "stuff."

In a way, I don't mind the ala carte approach to pricing - those who bring more luggage, pay more; those who eat &/ drink, pay for what they consume; those who watch movies, pay for the privilage. It gives you a bit of control over what it ends up costing you. Many people might be okay if that was the way it all started - but now it just looks like they keep taking things away. It keeps the base price lower and that looks good in advertisements.

I used to wish the cruise line would include fair (or at least better) pay for the crew in the price of the cruise. Now, the HSC essentially does that - and that's how I think of it, as just an additional cost of the cruise, just like takes and fees.

...we will soon be flying naked!

Or we can wear all our clothes (but then we'd have to pay for 2 seats to contain all that girth!) ;)

Maybe the airlines would take better care of our checked luggage and keep it safe from theft and loss. That might help cut down on what people lug aboard.

I read that article.

It is absurd -- what do they think some of us are to do with medications??? DH takes 15 medications several of them he takes 2 and 3 times a day -- thus that is a lot of pills and containers. And some of his pills come in huge containers since they are HORSE pills. We have a regular medical bag that they are kept in which takes up 1/2 of a carry-on -- we only have small carry-ons -- not the large ones that I see some people lugging.

And what do you do with cameras??

Welll that's the thing. Then people wondered why I was so upset twith the no carry on rule to the US that Canadians had earlier this year. Thank goodness that is over. If people would bring a reasonable size on the plane they probably wouldn't be charging. You get your cheapo people that are trying to save $25 by lugging a huge suitcase on board ruining it for everyone.

Makes me glad we've decided to drive to our next cruise, but some people don't have that option. We won't have that option if we keep talking about a European cruise in 2011 or 2012. By then, I guess airlines will be charging as much for a bag as for a person so we may never get to Europe.

Well, according to Spirit, [source: http://www.spiritair.com/PressReleaseDetails.aspx?number=20100405] here's what you'd get.

Looks like personal gear is excluded (cameras, baby gear, assistive devices, stroller, food for the flight) AND you get a 16" x 14" x 12" bag per pax, that you might use to store your meds! :-) Easy peasy.

Now...that is reasonable IMO. Thx for the info:).

Thank you 7 !

That really is the reason so many of us are reluctant to check anything we ever wish to see again.

Greg,

I can also see the business for UPS going up as more people refuse to encourage the airlines in this rampant escalation of "Fee Abuse".

One could easily "Next Day Air" to themselves an average carry-on for the same money, and with more security of arrival than for checked luggage

PS: I can imagine the day when they charge the PAX fare based on per pound ! (I would really loose $$$ on that one ;) )

Why do I get a feeling that this all started when the airline cabin stewards asked the government to set standards on the size and weight of the carry-ons that could be brought onto the airplane. There was an article in our newspapers about this about a month ago. The cabin steward were complaining about having to heave heavy bags into the bins and trying to juggle the larger ones to get everything to fit.

The government responded that it should be up to the airlines to do this.

So -- Spirit is the first to repsond.

AMEN S7S.

After spending 4 days on business in Milan with NO luggage my co-workers and I were none too please with the airline. Luckily were WERE on business and since our employer arranged the travel we really had no moral issue at all charging several outfits we needed to work for the week to our company cards. If I was leisure traveling I would have been VERY reluctant to pay Milan prices for clothing!

After that I have been very hesitant to check any bags on any non direct flights. Charging for a "normal" carry on is overboard IMHO. How about they just refuse to allow the huge suitacses, guitars, fishing rods etc people carry on? Then there will be plenty of room for normal stuff.

And then there was the time I flew non-stop from San Juan, PR to Boston, Mass.

They lost my luggage.

Hmmm, tempted to support this after a rather large lady 'shared' my seat on a flight a few years ago. Not pleasant and not forgotten...

Last month I flew to Tampa to visit my sister. It was cheaper to mail my belonging (via USPS flat rate box) than to check a bag. I had a small carry on with my lap-top. But that was it.

On my last couple of flights on Delta I saw the usual passengers in the waiting area with multiple huge suitcases, totes, bags, and the like. I was beaming, ear to ear, as I watched Delta personnel walking through and tagging and taking luggage that was too big to fit on the plane. It would be simpler if they would do this screening along with the security screening; i.e., if the bag doesn't fit A x B x C dimension, you go back downstairs and check it through.

My only question... how did they collect the fee for those bags taken at the gate. Maybe they hold them for ransom on the other end?
