conquest review jan 2-9 part 2

On to the ports:

Our first port was Montego Bay. Thanks to cruise critic we chose the day at Sunset Beach Resort. 20 a day for adults and 10 for children. We had a great time. We took a taxi from the port for 2 per person. They drop you off in front and you go to the security desk. They escort you to the front desk where you leave your cruise cards and pay your fees. Should have taken the advice here about taking your own cups. All the drinks come in small plastic cups. The resort is not the most luxurious but is nice and clean. There is a large beach area with nice beach chairs. Kayaking and paddle boats are free. There is an area where you can snorkel but the employees watch and don't let you get to close to the coral. My nephew and daughter did see some good fish and were satisfied. They do have a small casino, spa, gift shop, and a miniature golf course. WE just hung out at the beach. When we left they call a taxi for you. I had to go to the security hut to retreive our cruise cards and there were taxi drivers begging for you to take their taxi. I don't know if I would want to explore Montego Bay on my own. The taxi drivers do offer you tours but we chose to stay at the beach as long as possible. We did do a little shop at the port building. The line to get on the boat was long and they scanned and looked through your bags.

Grand Cayman:\

I had booked a snorkel/stringray tour with Captain Marvin's over the internet. I think you save around 15 per person instead of booking with Carnival. Captain Marvin's is a short walk from the pier. You pay your fees and board a shuttle that takes you to the boats. The hurricane damage was unbelievable. We boarded a boat that held around 50 people and headed out to sea. It was about 30 minute ride to the first snorkel stop. I am not a very strong swimmer and you had to swim out from the boat about 50 yards to the reef. I found the current too strong. The better swimmers thought it was great. We then headed to stingray city. When we arrived there were dozens of boats all around the sand bar. The water is shallow enough to walk in. We did have an incident that could have been serious. You jump off the side of the boat into the water and walk to where the stingrays are. There were numerous passengers from our boat in the water and others still waiting to enter the water, my son jumped in and my 20 year old nephew was going to hand my 8 year old nephew to him and they were going to head to the stringrays. Right after my son jumped into the water one of the crew threw the bucket of squid in the water right on top of him. Instead the bucket there is a 3 or 4 lb weight which hit him in the head and drew blood. He came back on the boat and my nurse sister looked at it and said it did not need stitches. We put ice on it. Unfortunately that was the end of his stringray adventure. The others did enjoy there time there. We then went to another snorkel site. I did not get off the boat. I stayed on with my son. We we returned to shore we reported the incident to Captain Marvins and they refunded 3 out of 10 fares. The crew was not very helpful and made fun of my son for complaining, (in Spanish which he understood every word). Another person on the boat said they noticed they were careless when throwing over the anchor as well. We did a little shopping on deck and headed back to the boat. My parents, husband and sister did not want to do the snorkeling and instead chose a taxi tour of the island. I can't remember what it cost but I think 15dollars per person. They really enjoyed it inspite of the hurricane damage.

Another fun day. Part of our group took a deep sea fishing trip through Carnival. It was 139 per person. They thought it was worth it. Out of the 6 of them only 1 did not catch a fish. The seas were rough though and my dad got a little sea sick. They still had fun.

My sister, husband and small sun chose the underwater submarine trip. She had booked it online and said saved about 15 per person over the ship sponsored trip. This was a morning trip and they then headed to Paradise Beach.

My mom, niece, sister, daughter, and self headed downtown for shopping in the morning. Lunch at Pancho's Backyard and then to Paradise Beach.

My sister had been to Cancun but never Cozumel and said she would definiately like to return. Paradise beach is beautiful, clean, and lots of fun. I don't think the prices are cheap but the drinks are good and the beer cold. If you want to use the water toys there is a $5 charge. But for us beach bums it is still free. My daughter had her own snorkel equipment and did enjoy that. I had a 30 minute massage for $30 and that was good. All in all we had a great day.

As you can see we are not shoppers so I cannot comment too much about that. In Cozumel you have to bargain unless you go to the bigger shops like Los Cincos. The only thing I bought was a liquid silver bracelet for my daughter. I paid $35 but I don't know if that is a good deal or not. She just really liked it. The only thing we bought in Grand Cayman was Tortuga rum. In Jamaica we bought rum and coffee.

Overall the ship was gorgeous. They do have a nice gym facility. There is plenty of equipment and a nice whirlpool, sauna, and steam room.

The food was good and plentiful. It was really a good vacation for a large group. We spent time together and apart and we all enjoyed ourselves.

Since Carnival had lost one of our bags we got priority debarkment. My husband and I got off early collected our bags and took a taxi to the rental car location downtown. We picked up a mini van and headed to the port to pick up my parents and 2 children. I think we picked them up around 10:30. since our planes did not leave until after 4 we headed to the French Quarter for Brunch. We went to Brennan's and had a great brunch. We then walked around a bit and headed to the airport. As I said in my earlier post renting a van for around $45 dollars was cheaper than a taxi back and forth to the airport for 6 of us. It was odd because picking it up at the airport was more expensive then picking it up downtown by around $3. I think it is some kind of airport fee. My two sisters husbands went to pick up their cars and then came back to the port to pickup the luggage and families. They were on the road by 11:00a.m. and back home by 10 that night. We were all sorry to see our trip end.
