Lanyards?

Recommended Posts

Do they hand them out with the card for free when you start your cruise?

How much are they if they aren't free and I wonder if I should just buy some cheap at home first.

TIA!!

I like the lanyard because some of my shorts do not have pockets- In my lanyard pouch I have my sign and sail card, my DL and a few dollars.

-I got the lanyard and the pouch from an office supply store at home.

The casino does have a lanyard but your sign and sail card will need to have a whole punched into it--and you can not hole punch your DL. so you need a pouch

But I don't to carry my DL with me do I? I figured all I need is to find some lanyards for us with a key ring on the end.

I'm sorry, but I think wearing your cruise card around your neck on a lanyard is just weird. Put your card in your pocket, or in your husband's pocket, or in a small clutch. A lanyard is a sure sign of a newbie cruiser.

I agree completely. Although I know people do it, I think they look stupid and to wear them all the time is just unattractive. Sorry for you folks who disagree.

I agree...you wouldn't wear your room key around your neck at a hotel...don't do it on the ship! You look like you're at a convention!

And telling people that they are weird or that they look stupid is attractive?

Sometimes you don't have pockets. Even if you don't wear it around your neck al the time, having a leash on your card makes it easier to fish out of the bottom of your beach bag. Having the alternative to use it if you want to is convenient.

And we veteran cruisers just love to turn our noses up to those newbie cruisers.

Maybe they should have a special ship for those newbies.

While lanyards might be the dumbest thing to us, try looking at the other side for people with mental issues (lack of better words) where they will instantly forget where they place their card and will also lose it. Lanyards might be helpful for them when they are unable to travel with someone...

Jeez, it's just a lanyard, why so snarky?

A lot of people have gotten used to the requirement to wear their ID on a lanyard or clip at work, so wearing one on the ship would feel normal. I don't think they look stupid because I really don't even notice them--I have other things I'd rather pay attention to while cruising, and I certainly don't think they have anything to do with looking attractive or not.

My husband and I both wear them, and we are NOT newbies, we are Princess Elite. I never carry a purse, and sometimes I don't have any pockets. I don't put it in my husband's pocket because we are not glued at the hip 24/7.

And I repeat--it's just a lanyard--who cares?

Perhaps she is a new cruiser and really thinks she must wear one. After all she did ask if they pass them out with the cards.

It doesn't mean I am turning my nose up at anyone; just saying they are not required and there are other options.

amen. I'd rather wear a lanyard and be a nice respectful person, than not wear a lanyard and pass judgement on those who do.

To the OP, no they don't pass out lanyards with your Sign & Sail card. You should probably pick one up at the dollar store at home. If you can get one on the ship, it's probably way more spendy than getting it at home and bringing it with you.

Happy sailing.

Not a newbie & I wear a lanyard...doesn't seem weird to me at all since I wear one every day at work. The nicest thing about a lanyard on a cruise is that it doesn't have my picture on it :p ! I also wear the lanyard off the ship since it tucks quite nicely into my shirt for safety. I picked mine up at a celtic shop so I can wear my colors, but they can easily be found in stores since so many people use them nowdays. If you're crafty, you can make your own. :)

Me also! Plus it is so much easier with kids because I can do a quick scan to make sure everybody has thiers.

To the OP No they don't hand them out, but they do have them in the ships store and they make a great souvenier for about $6. They are a lot cheaper in the ports (about $2 to $4) and I pick one up at each new port I go to. They are much more fun to wear at work then the plain ones handed out by my employeer. That way everybody gets to see where I was last :D

I hope you aren't telling people that as plenty of passengers do find wearing a lanyard useful. I'm not a newbie cruiser and found keeping my ship's card in a plastic pouch attached to a lanyard (I found these at Walmart) very handy. I don't always wear something with deep enough pockets to put my card in securely and sometimes I need to go back to the cabin on my own or have my photo id handy to show to the kids' program counselors when I pick up my girl from there.

BTW, if you go to just about any school (at least here in Los Angeles), you'll see teachers wearing lanyards to keep their keys handy. I don't think anyone would dare to call them newbie teachers.

i usually wear mine around the ship because i dont have pockets alot of the time and dont want to drag around a purse.

i suggest getting one of those waterproof lanyards to take with you on excursions. I'm very anal about leaving my card and documents out on the beach while i'm in the water. i just get one of those waterproof pouches, stick my seapass in there and wear it in the water

After 15 cruises-- i am far from a newbie- A different way to look at it- maybe I WANT people to see that I am a platinum cruiser.

you need your drivers license when you get off the ship

I am a newbie and was going to bring a lanyard for the ship, but was looking for something to take on excursions (I really didn't want to lug my purse).

I saw the wallets2wear.com on the Today show and bought one for me & my DH. We have been trying them out around town and love them.

Just a newbie's 2 cents,

Tamara

Well there certainly are lots of opinions about whether to wear one or not. I said in my first post that I am sorry to those who disagree with me as this is a forum to express our opinions and that is what I was doing. I agree with another poster who said you look like you are at a convention. Maybe those of you who wear them do not realize that other people notice you. I wear one at work too but I don't feel as if I have to carry this over to my vacation time. I have even seen people with them in the dining room. Ladies............get yourself a small purse.

To the OP.....no, they are not passed out with the cards when you board the ship. You can buy one ahead of time or I have seen them for sale in the ship's gift shop. But it is not mandatory that you use one to carry your card.

Have a wonderful cruise.

Does the cruise line put your picture on theses cards,if not where? i have heard that they take your picture when you board. If they dont wouldn't it be easy to use some elses card, after it falls out of thier pockets.

I believe that when you return to the ship, your card is swiped. Your picture is then brought up on a monitor, and a security person will look at it and verify.

wow, I'm so glad there are a few more of us who think wearing lanyards is weird! I'm forever being bashed on these sorts of threads because I think wearing lanyards reminds me of a bunch of schoolchildren on a school tour.

(Yes, I know some of you have to wear lanyards on your "professional jobs"..I STILL think it looks dumb.)

Thanks so much for all your replies! I appreciate and read all of them.

I'm really don't want to have to wear one on my neck but I might for my kids.

I noticed Eddie Bauer sells a nice little lightweight wallet thingy you wear over your shoulder I could keep all five of our cards in it. We'll all be together.

But I'm wondering If I should get the kids each one to wear around their necks as they will probably be going between hanging with us and going to the camp place.

What I find REALLY weird is that anyone would feel so strongly about something so ridiculous, and need to post something so judgmental.

Now, when I hit the Islands with my lanyard around my neck dangling to my Bermuda shorts, should I wear my white shoes with black socks, or maybe my black wing tips with white socks? How about my sandals with the argyle socks?

Well, it really depends on the color of your lanyard. If it's black I would wear black shoes with white socks! :p

Why?

Security at the ports want a photo ID to go with your sign and sail card to allow you access back to the ship.

Will the kids be getting soda stickers== if not they really wont need their cards except for cabin access.

First time I've heard of this..thank you!

it will be listed in your ships activity pages what will be needed to get on and off the ship. Most ports require your photo id-- some do not though

I was a bit surprised last cruise in the casino when a host came by and punched my card and clipped a lanyard on it. I'm not a lanyard wearer but did see the benefit of not forgetting my card in the slot readers. The lanyard had a little grab thingy you could clip to your shirt. So when off to the casino, I'll be with string - otherwise in the pocket it goes.
