Triumph Eastern Review

Hey all, just back from the Triumph Eastern Itinerary. Overall we had a wonderful cruise. The ship is in great shape for her age, clean and well maintained. The crew was very pleasant, never saw a grumpy crew member. The CD Mark Price was funny and Wee Jimmy is his assisitant. We had a balcony cabin on deck 10. It was a bit of a problem on Thursday night with the Camp Carnival overnight being right above us, but otherwise a very nice cabin. The food was great. Our waitstaff was very pleasant and attentive and our wine steward was also very attentive, which is something we have had a problem with before. Sunday and Thursday were formal nights, loved the lobster tail and escargot, had seconds, ok thirds.

The Puerto Rico stop was a bit dissapointing. It was beautiful arriving, seeingt the fort and the city, but by the time we got in to port it was getting dark and raining off and on. The shops all close at 8:00, so their was not much to do other than drink at Senor Frogs, which was not a problem. Also did a short tour of the Don Q rum factory and some tasting. St Thomas was great. We did a shore tour going to St John-Trunk Bay. The tour was supposed to go at 12:30, but was delayed until 1:30, which made it a little too short. Trunk Bay was dissapointing for snorkeling. Besides the ocean surge that was clouding the water, there is not much there anymore. I was there a bunch of years ago and there was much more of a reef: hurricaine damage. If you want to snorkel, pick another spot, but St John is beautiful. We used the time in the morning to go shopping in town. $3.00pp for a taxi to town, and lots of jewelry, electronics, perfume and booze stores. The booze store will all give you tastes, if you want to try the Virgin Island rums. Go for the Cruzan Rum Cream; it's like Baileys, but made with rum. St Maarten was nice. We took a water taxi to the beach ($5.00 for all day pass). The beach reminded me of Mexico, with all of the people trying to sell you things and braid your hair. The shops along the beach have $1.00 beers too. We did the bus tour of the island. The ship is on the dutch side, so it was nice to check out the French side too. It was a nice trip with a very funny driver/tour guide. The rest of the week was sea days.

We really enjoyed this cruise, having more sea days. It seemed like it lasted longer without running around every day. Our dissapointments, were minimal and standard. I went out one morning at 0800 to find a deck chair and they were all saved! When do these people get up? All in all another wonderful Carnival experience.

The best advice is to have fun. Try all the foods you want, because you can get something else if you don't like it, or more if you do. Be freindly with the crew. They are working their butts off to please you. Don't try to do everything, bring a highlighter and figure out what in the Capers you wnat to do and remember: you are on vacation!

Glad to hear you had a great time. We leave for our pre-cruise in about six weeks and can't wait.

Were you traveling with children? If so, did they enjoy the kids club programs on this ship?

Any ship board late night entertainment recommendations? Comedians? Fun Bars?

Thanks again!

Hi! Do you know who the piano player was in the piano bar and was he any good? We always enjoy the piano bar. Any other good entertainment we shouldn't miss? Thanks!

Sue

We didn't travel with the kids this time, but there were plenty on the ship. My 9yo daughter really enjoyed the Camp Carnival last year. They have one overnight that she loved. They stay up all night watching movies and playing games. Anyone that falls asleep gets a mustache drawn on them. They bring the kids back to the cabin around 0700 the next morning. She slept until mid afternoon that day. She enjoyed the freedom offered to 9 yo and up that they could sign themselves out. She spent some time with us on deck and went to the activities she wanted to. We always did dinner and shore excursions together.

I don't know who the piano player was but he was very good. I also enjoy a good piano bar. My only problem with the one on the Triumph was that it was small, so it filled up fast and also got smokey fast. The shows were all good. We had late seating dinner (2030), so we went from dinner to the 2230 show, which was followed by the late night, adult comedian. One was great and the other was ok. The deck parties at night were also a good time, lots of games and conga lines and food.
