Cruise ship passengers robbed at gunpoint

Recommended Posts

Not good. Stories like this just give other countries' scofflaws ideas.

Now that these thugs got away with it, I won't be surprised to see it happen in other places where piracy and robbery are more common.

Makes me nervous...we are supposed to stop in St. Kitts on our Southern Caribbean cruise on the Serenade in January...maybe we'll stay on the ship that day.

better not get off any day then if you are that worried. Happens all the time everywhere in the world.

Hm. Strange. This is the first robbing of a tour bus I have ever heard of as a news story.

I've heard of piracy off the horn of Africa and near Somalia.

But never this.

I guess I had it on the wrong channel all this time.

Maybe I've been hiding under a rock but I haven't heard any stories about tour buses being robbed at gunpoint...sure lots of random people get robbed every day but this is targeting a specific group that I will be a part of...can't help it...makes me nervous.

I agree. This is the first I've heard of tour buses being robbed at gunpoint all of the time, everywhere in the world. Though I wouldn't be nervous about it just yet.

People should never question a New Yorker about robberies!:D;) As you can see by the "Grin", I was joking. I have traveled to NYC many times on business and I never had an issue.:)

Bottom line. Crime can and does happen everywhere. This type news is not going to stop me from enjoying my cruises. Just be smart and don't take a lot of valubles on shore. Limit the amount of cash that you take, etc.

I was just on the Mercury and in St Kitts. Got off and there was a very large presence of Police in the shopping area in front to the ship. I even remarked to my sisters that there were a lot a police. If a vendor, taxi driver, tour opperator became a bit "pushey" the police interviened immediately. I'm thinking they have been having complaints from tourist in the past and stepped up their presence.

It is very scarey that a tour bus would be robbed at gunpoint. I know it happens everywhere, but I don't think people expect it to happen on such a beautiful island.

Its sad as a few more incidents and the cruise lines will stop making stops at a port which has a lot of crime. Then the whole island suffers. :(

I hope the authorities catch the people responsible quickly. I am glad that the people on the tour bus were unhurt.

Something similar happened in Costa Rica ( I 'beleive' it was Costa Rica) a couple years ago I think.

Very true and some good advice.

There was a robbery at a Publix the other day, but that doesn't stop me from going grocery shopping.

'tis the world that we live in these days.

I've known some people off of Carnival Conquest robbed on a plantation tour in Jamaica. Also a year or so ago a bus was being robbed in Costa Rica, but a passenger killed one of the robbers.

Loved St. Kitts and seeing Brimstone Hill fortress BTW.

A Segway Tour in Nassau was robbed at gunpoint last year around this time.....a couple weeks before that another tour on Nassau was robbed at gunpoint...it happens. Thieves don't discriminate based on what cruise line your on.

Yes, RCCL stops in St Kitts, we are scheduled to stop there on our Feb 27 cruise on the Explorer. Not too concerned though, will be touring the island with about 30 motorcycles.

We were in St. Kitts in March of this year on Serenade. We did essentially the same excursion, only booked privately. Maybe robbers prefer to rob a bus load of 30 people than a van of 10. I'm surprised at this story because St. Kitts is not a port of call about which I felt any discomfort or fear. There are ports where I just instinctively feel the need to beware. I didn't find St. Kitts to be one of those. While I agree this type of thing does happen all over the place, it is very sad when it happens to vacationers who have spent the entire year saving and looking forward to their fun week in the Caribbean. It would undoubtedly ruin the rest of the trip.

This can happen anywhere in the world. Even in the Caribbean.

A few years ago a charter bus going from Toronto to a regional casino was stopped and the occupants were robbed.

The clever thieves were not taking any chances; they stopped the bus on the way there rather than on the return trip.

I remember the one in Costa Rica (I thought I read it on CC). It was an older gentlemen who was an ex marine who killed him with his hands.

Not sure if we are getting off our Oasis trip coming up. Not due to the violence but the Oasis is a destination itself. Probably will get off at cozumel to try the adult mini golf

I am often shocked and surprised when someone expresses their own personal thoughts or concerns about something and they are made to feel stupid by some of the long term members on this board. I have been a member for several years, but choose not to post for fear of being flamed for a comment that I felt was valid. I am glad the OP posted this as I am sure things like this are on all our minds. I like the rule of "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all".

We'll be going to St. Kitts on our December AOS cruise. I haven't heard anything about RCCL changing things. Given that Celebrity is only stopping that particular tour, and not cancelling the port of call, I imagine that RCCL might do the same.
