If you have booked with an idependant tour guide , as soon as you know your ship isn't stopping there, you need to cancel it. I believe that mazatlan Frank returns your money.

As for Manzanillo, we went with Scuba Shack last year & we had a very good time snorkeling! you can find them through gomanzanillo.com :)

With the cruise ships pulling out of Mazatlan for the rest of 2011 because of the ongoing violence - how is that going to affect the shore trips that everyone has planned with independent tour guides? We booked a trip to the brewery with Mazatlan Frank and have been so looking forward to it.

Does any one know anything about the alternate port of Manzinillo? We planned on booking a tour with Frank's associates in Cabo and in PV - Cabo Arts & Cluture that is identical to the one from the ship but costs 1/2 of what the cruise line charges. Had not decided on what we wanted to do in PV yet - any recommendations?

Did they announce something new today? I have not heard that HAL has done this yet.

It looks like Monday (tomorrow) we will see if we will still be stopping in Mazatlan.

We took our two teen boys last year and I would recommend Los Veranos for zipling - we booked and in Cabo we did parasailing and rented jet skis. We booked both independently.

We are looking to rent jet skis in Cabo, we have 3 teenagers and that's all they really want to do....do you have the name of the company you booked them with?

We went to the Dreams Resort in Puerto Vallarta. Excellent all inclusive beach, food, and drink for the day.

We took a tour of Mazatlan through the ship. Excellent.

We did pretty much nothing in Cabo except go to Cabo Wabo. We were really disappointed in them.

Today John Heald announced they are NOT cancelling Mazatlan. We sail next week and are looking forward to this port. We are doing the Mexican Show, Sightseeing and Shopping. Really looking forward to the Mexican Show for a piece of culture.

I typically book thru the ship cuz you just never know what will happen. If your ship doesn't make it, you are refunded 100% of the cost. Some of the tour companies may let you cancel with notice but usually they tack on a percentage for processing fees. That happened to me on a PV jungle tour once when I decided not to do it.

It is more, but it's not really double. My excursion did not include any transportation. Your's would. Also included for you is insurance that your ship will wait for you or get you to the next port. If you booked independently and were in a traffic jam (or accident), and were late getting back, the ship would most likely sail without you, unless some of their excursions were also late.

These are good valid reasons to book thru the ship. Just sayin that is my preference even if the cost is higher not that it is a bad thing to do booking on your own just be aware of the risks with trying to save a buck.

I would suggest that once you land in Cabo, just take a water taxi over to Medano Beach ($2pp). Water taxis are everywhere on the Marina. There should be lots of jet skis available. That way, you can rent when you are ready, and return when you want.

Many of the resorts there are happy to have you, so long as you buy a beverage, or two.

Also Medano Beach is the "swimmable" beach in Cabo.

Yes you will find MANY drugstores catering to tourists in every cruise ship stop.....everything that is not a narcotic is available without a perscription, just ask for what you need....one of my favorite signs outside these stores is the tall blue colored "SUPER V iagraMan" :p

we were on the splendor in may 2010 with 3 familes/14 in all for the mex. riv cruise. here are some notes on what we did. in pv we hired a tour guide and it turned out to be the highlight of our entire cruise. his name is reinhard dressler. i took our group of 14 on an amazing hike up the coast to colomitos beach, along one beautiful beach after another. we ended on las animas beach and caught our panga back to los tomitos and then on the city bus back to town. he also took us to chicos paradise where we had a blast riding a natural water slide into the river(amazing!!) he briefly snorkeled at colomitos beach but jelly fish cut that short.i could go on and on about the day! it lasted 9 hours! he will customize your day to fit your time frame and budget. we used city buses for our transportation because of the aize of our group and also to keep costs down. the buses were a blast! he stayed with us all day, also took us on a quick tour of the cathederal. but his real love it to get youout of town to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. he is a passionate environmentalist who loves the land very much. he was so knowledgable and patient with our large group. he even stayed with us at the end of the day as we did some shopping at the flea market. he escorted us right back to the gates of the cruise dock. at the end of the day we felt like we had spent the day with a friend not a tour guide. you can find him by googling his name. his web sight is simple but dont let that stop you. everyone in our group agrees this day was the high light of our cruise. i did all of my contact through e-mail. he was very reliable and always answered back.

in maz. we had a great beach day at stone island. it is extremely easy to do on your on. no need to pay for a tour package. it is a 5-7 minute walk out the port gate to the water taxi. 5 min water taxi ride and you are at stone island. rustic and laid back. this is not a resort. there are several simple restaurants right on the beach. victor and lettys are the most popular but there are others. we camped out at one next to victors. they took care of us all day. if your day a little food and some drinks that will be happy to let you use there shade & bathrooms for the day. we enjoyed boogie boarding, hoarse back riding and just relaxing. there were also atv's and banana boat, etc. it was not crowded at all. it was a very relaxing change from the hustle and bustle of the ship. felt very safe. i know there has been lots of talk about safety in maz. recently . if you dont wnat to walk to the water taxi. there were plenty of taxis that would drive you the 2 minutes down the street, but it is easily walkable. if you are interested in stone island check out all the posts here on the boards for directions. if you choose to go just make sure that you go LEFT out of the cruise port gate, NOT RIGHT. there is also a water taxi to the right but it is a longer walk and will drop you on the far side of stone island that will then reguire a ride in the back of a truck or on a tractor trailer to reach the beach. if you go left the water taxi will be a 5-7 min walk ,and you will then be dropped off at a small dock. just walk up and over the small hill and the beach will be right in front of you. we loved our day at stone island, just remember it is not fancy. it is a laid back beach day.

in cabo we spend the day at medano beach. boys rented jet skis, girls parasailed. be prepared to be swarmed by very pushy boat tour operators. i found this to be really annoying. we actually walked past must of them and then found a guy who was very polite and told us what he could offer us. we went with him. he took us over to medano beach by water taxi (5-7min ride) and also arranged our parasailing for the girls. i would have liked to take a water taxi out to lover beach but we ran out of time. you will have an excellent view of lovers beach and the famous arches from the deck of the cruise ship both coming and going from cabo. we took lots of great pictures of the arched right from the besk of the ship. just remember that cabo is a tender port so you will need to allow more time to get off and on the ship. it is also your shortest time in the 3 ports so that was kind of a bummer.i would really encourage you to really research the info here on the boards and other sights. i am a compulsive planner and got so much great info. that way. hope you enjoy your cruise. we loved the splendor! hope this info gave you some things to think about!
