RCI not allowing passengers to bring wine onboard?

Do you think RCI should allow passengers to bring their own wine with them?

I tried the Black Box Wine (Chardonnay) a few days ago after reading this thread. The only other boxed wine I had before was something atrocious a couple of years ago at a friend's party (Peter Vella?). I was pleasantly surprised by Black Box, and will be bringing one with us on our cruise.

Does anyone know of a good tasting blush or rose that comes in a box? It doesn't have to be a great wine. Just one that tastes good and is a little higher in quality to Strawberry Hill.

Have a great next cruise.

Let's get back on-subject OK? I really hate to get stopped for bringing a couple of bottles on RCI Mariner 5/29/05. Anybody cruise just recently on Mariner and taken wine on board? What kind was it, how did you pack it and were you questioned? icon5.gif

Many thanks,

G

JC, that's probably because you have a dim view of white zin. I assure you, you find all varieties in a box. I'm no fan of white zin, either, except mixed w/club soda & a twist on a hot summer day. My idea of pop!:D

Yes, and No. I do not have a high opinion of white zin, but I have consumed my share of it. There is a time and place for every kind of wine. Beringers White Zin is probably the largest selling American wine in history, and it really is good with Thai food, or other spicey oriental food. It is almost sweet enough to be a decent dessert wine too. It would not be my first choice for either of those activities, but really it is a nice wine. We had a group of friends that we exchanged white elephant gifts. A millionaire acquaiintance who in years past everyone wanted whatever he considered junk... One year he gave away an autographed Richard Petty Helmet. I guess he figured out after the bidding war that got going on that item that he needed to get into the proper spirit, and the next year he brought a box 3 liter of Peter Vella ( I think) white zin. I ended up with that. I used it for cooking, after drinking a couple of glasses.

Thanks for the White Zin tip. We would have to get some and try it before depending on it on the ship. Hopefully we won't end up using it for cooking.

I am also interested if anyone can answer the question raised in the post above that asks about recent wine confiscations.

Anybody who has cruised recently on Mariner or any RCCL ship and taken wine on board? What kind was it, how did you pack it and were you questioned?

Keep entering the poll if you haven't already and have a great next cruise.

I am getting on the ship the day you disembark!! :)

Hope you make it on with your wine. I am going to spread mine out, some in my carry on, some in my DH, and some in the DS (as in sister). Mine will include a chilled bottle of champagne for sail away on our balcony!

Wahoo!! Good to go!! :D

Zinfandel?? Mine requires those dark skin grapes to stay through full fermentation in contact with the skins. Then a nice long sleep in oak barrels before bottling. Now THAT is a good Zin, the way it should be!! ;)

Cheers!

HAL did not allow wine or any bottles on our last cruise on Ryndam in March.

That is not what HAL says. HAL's policy is that you may not bring hard alcohol on board, but you may bring as much wine as you want. Since I am next sailing on HAL, and from my obvious interest in wine. I have researched this topic thoroughly. I am not saying that this poster is not telling the truth, but I think they are completely mistaken.

Island Lady, your description of Zinfandel is the one I like. I drink more Zin than anything else. In the less than $15 range Zingaro is a very yummy choice, in the less than $25 range, Cigar Zin and The Zin both by M Cosentino are tremendous values with unbelieveable flavor and are very drinkable now.

Give me a good Zin and I am a happy wine drinker!

My neighbor's home made wine packs more punch then any hard spirit would ever. What's HAL's position on that?

HAL's policy is as stupid as any other cruiseline policy, Badbuoy.:D :p You drink a 6 oz glass of wine you are consuming the same amount of alcohol as in a shot of bourbon. So it is a silly rule from that point of view. I guess the other lines are just nickel and dimeing the poor cruise passenger, too. Dang that Carnival Corporation. :p :D

From my limited experience I can tell you that Carnival didn't care much for what you brought onto the ship. Now I'm sure there are limits to everything so the word of advise that I would give is to use descretion ( no dolly's packed with Bud) and to drink in moderation.

Could you imagine security checking every single bag looking for booze! Your week would be over before you set sail.

I will join you in that praise of Zin!! :)

Bless those white zin drinkers back in the 70's and 80's, as they were the reason the Californians did not yank up and destroy all those wonderful vines. To think what we may have missed!!

cheers!

I wish I wasn't so hung over from enjoying my Tarheels little activity last evening, I could try to consume some Zin tonight! O well, I will be back, and it was worth it!:D

How 'bout them Tarheels? Yee Haw! It was a good night here in Charlotte, although you could hear the faint whimpers of Duke, NC State, and Wake Forest fans.

Yes, truly the universe righted itself last night. Restoring Duke to their place, which is below the Tarheels.

After reviewing RCCL's wine list, I plan on bringing three or four bottles on with me and will gladly pay the corkage fee. None of the wines I'll be bringing are wines they are offering, and their list is for the most part dismal at best. If they had a better list I'd gladly just get it from them rather than going through the hassle of carrying it on with me.

You and me both, ducklite!! :)

I am not trying to be cheap by bringing my own wine, I am like you and don't see anything on their overpriced wine list that makes me very thirsty! ;)

I am bringing the good stuff aboard also!

Cheers!

We often bring a bottle or two for in-cabin consumption. We are happy just to have a glass with dinner, so we get a bottle (sometimes red for me & white for DH), and nurse it for 3-4 days. They will re-cork it and have it on the table the next night. I suppose if I were really a wine snob, I would be able to sense that the wine was turning after 2 nights, but so far, I can't. Must be the 2-3 martinis before dinner (which I think are very fairly priced, BTW).
