Denali2003 Posted January 18, 2011 #1 Share Posted January 18, 2011 Ok, this may be a dumb question but, do ALL of the islands in the Caribbean take US Currency?
flamomo Posted January 18, 2011 #2 Share Posted January 18, 2011 All the Caribbean ports I have visited have accepted USDs.
trish1c Posted January 18, 2011 #3 Share Posted January 18, 2011 Yes. They also take credit cards.
pms4104 Posted January 18, 2011 #4 Share Posted January 18, 2011 While the islands may accept USD, they likely will give you change in local currency. If you are planning to buy small, inexpensive widgets, you might want to take small bills ashore so you don't get a wad of island money in change.
hightownCO Posted January 18, 2011 #5 Share Posted January 18, 2011 Hi Kelley! :D Not a dumb question. I asked same thing about the Casino in Aruba on the Ports of call forums and surprisingly, even the casino there takes US Dollars. So I was told anyway. Thought after our morning tour there, may duck into the casino for a VERY short period. Like Camp637 says, we'd probably get change back in local currency so small bills are a good idea. Anytime I've bought anything - like in St. Maarten - the price was always in USDollars.
Infi Posted January 18, 2011 #6 Share Posted January 18, 2011 All of the major islands do. They may have their own currencies (Eastern Caribbean dollar is a popular one), but they will happily accept your USD. The only exceptions I can think of are Martinique and St. Barth's: both used to use the franc and now only use Euros. Taking small bills is preferable, both for bargaining purposes and so you won't be stuck with their currency after making a purchase.
Denali2003 Posted January 18, 2011 Author #7 Share Posted January 18, 2011 Thank you every one - thanks for the tip of taking small bills. Probably a good idea to have $1 anf $5 only. Anything over $10 will probably use credit card. Thought after our morning tour there, may duck into the casino for a VERY short period. :D Sounds good to me!!
