Post-Cruise Anchorage Car?

Seeking advice from experienced northbound Alaska cruisers. Is it worth the time and trouble to rent a car in Anchorage for the day? We have a late flight home after the cruise, so we'll have some time on debarkation day, but we're not sure if doing so would be a lot of trouble and if we'd spend more time obtaining/returning the car than sightseeing.

We already booked the Princess transfers from Whittier to Anchorage. Where does the Princess transfer take us? Airport?

Any advice welcome. Thanks.

We have done Northbound twice and have a third booked May/2005.

The first trip we did Princess transfer Seward to Anchorage airport and rented a car for 5-days of land touring after the cruise. The last time we did the Princess transfer Seward to Anchorage hospitality room, which is downtown Anchorage. It is just a large room with some uncomfortable chairs and luggage storage. We did a walking tour and did some more shopping at little shops and the standard mall. Several restaurants and sights are listed on the "Alaska" Ports of Call section on these boards. Our next trip we are going to take the Princess transfer Whittier to Anchorage airport, and have a day room booked at the Holiday Inn Express to just relax for the day. Several couples we know rented a car for the day and enjoyed it. One headed to a glacier (Exit glacier I think), and one couple drove to Talkeetna and back for the shortest visit ever. There is plenty to do in Anchorage, especially with a car. Check out http://www.anchorage.net for ideas.

Princess doesn't go to Seward any more, it goes to Whittier. Most DEFINATELY rent a car, you will be extremely limited to just the downtown if you don't. Take the cruiseline BUS to the airport, get the first available you can, they buses run very early, by 7am. Rent your car at the airport, plenty of agencies, all the majors, and Dollar, Thrifty, Payless, Alamo. Request the Anchorage visitor guide. http://www.anchorage.net and PLAN your day in advance.
