T. Advisor King Posted August 26, 2011 #126 Share Posted August 26, 2011 You're wrong...... Some people know how to spend money wisely. Others throw it away. Spending money wisely doesn't mean you're cheap....it means that your financially organized. Throwing it away, if you go into debt to do this, doesn't mean your rich or generous. It means you can't handle finances. One such type will never "understand" the other....(money....the leading cause of divorce) I love gambling...I go every week...but I have a budget. When I lose it...I go home. I am certainly not cheap as far as spending....but I don't buy overpriced art or jewelry. And yes...I do thank those of you who spend so much for subsidizing my cruise. :) Great summary. It was off topic, but there were so many posts criticizing the commenters that it was not out of line. I definitely put myself in the "financially organized" category. Plus, I'd rather take a one week Caribbean cruise in March and then go to Europe in the summer than spend thousands of dollars on-board on my one-week cruise in March and not have any budget room for a summer vacation. I also assume that the art and jewellery is overpriced. I don't know why I think that. I just assume it is so. I generally don't buy anything in any of the ship's shops for more or less the same reason. I don't enjoy gambling unless I win. I've gambled a few times (Vegas and locally) but never on a cruise ship. I've never won and was only up about $4 once. Until I find a ship's casino where "the house never wins", I will probably continue to avoid them. Some consider it "fun" or "entertainment", so for them it is worth the money. Gambling just makes me feel sick to my stomach because I know I'm just giving money away for nothing. You can burn through $20 in a slot machine in 5 minutes. That could almost pay for a couple two-hour movies. I buy souveniers on land. I'd want to remember where I've been, not how I got there. I always get one or two pictures only. But we might easily take a thousand photos of our own, depending on the ports and the sightseeing we do. The ship's photos are sort of tokens. They really don't remind us of the trip, just that we were on a ship. I'm trying to think what our last S&S bill was. $280 for the auto tips. $210 for internet (due to last-minute itinerary change), $75 or so on three photos (including one my daughter bought). All our port activities were self-guided and we didn't buy any drinks (48 cans of soda and 2 bottles of champagne was more than enough). I don't go on vacation to get intoxicated. I think there were some odds and ends, so I'll say just under $600. I consider a cruise to be all-inclusive, so I'm always aiming for the auto-tips only. As a result, that $600 bill was a big one. gertiesmom Posted August 26, 2011 #129 Share Posted August 26, 2011 Our largest S&S bill was a mere $800, for just DH & I. But, we had a bottle of wine every night with dinner, plus drinks during the day, a few pics, some small purchases from the gift shop, casino (which I did win about $200), shore excursions, steakhouse, and the coffee shop. That was a 7day cruise.
gertiesmom Posted August 26, 2011 #130 Share Posted August 26, 2011 Oh yeah, on our cruise on the LIberty last year, I won every day on the same penny slot for 7 days. The biggest winning was $280, the smallest was $80. Anyway, walked away with a S&S bill of $500, but won over $800. Actually made money on a cruise! FlaParrotHead Posted August 26, 2011 #136 Share Posted August 26, 2011 CCL Legend in June '11 -- $3200 S&S - Myself, DW and two teenage DSs. Easy with a couple steakhouse dinners, several wine coupon "packages", Spa visits, gift shop spending, one CCL excursion (others were private bookings), additional tipping, and lots of Carnival FUN. Other things that add to it for us, we'll generally buy drinks for the PB player several nights, when we see a soldier in uniform we often offer them and their companion a drink, and there were a few casino charges but actually came out +~200 this time which was nice. We never buy/charge anything we know we can't pay in full when the statement comes. The sailing itself is always paid off before we embark, so the expenses are all that's left. TX Cruise Girl Posted August 26, 2011 #137 Share Posted August 26, 2011 Well, I can tell you the most a cruise has ever cost us for things NOT on our s&s bill.... $800 to get my DH out of the Cozumel jail, $800 to fly from Louisiana to Corpus Christi and $7000 to replace the vehicle we lost in hurricane Ike in Galveston. I'm sure my booze bill was pretty high on that one, too. :p
Warm Breezes Posted August 26, 2011 #138 Share Posted August 26, 2011 I just donated $50 to Save the Children and $100 to The Smile Train.....am I being foolish with my money? Have any of you to spend not a dime on the ship ever considered helping those less fortunate? How does what we spend on a cruise ship relate to what we give to charities???? You really are reaching and making some really wild assumptions about people. We don't limit what we spend on a vacation because we are on a budget. Some people may, that's their business. But I can say that I almost always come back with at least half or more of the cash I took for spending money (I plan $100 per day for the 4 of us total). We just don't buy things on a cruise that we do not want or need. Quite frankly we don't need to spend a lot of money to have fun. My kids are following right in our foot steps. We don't limit their S&S cards, they have open spending on our credit card. We tell them to go ahead and go do things like the arcade or buy frozen drinks. They have never spent over $30 on a cruise. Their choice. They were having fun on a cruise without spending any money. Go figure . Our choices of what we spend our money on while cruising has absolutely NOTHING to do with what donate to charity...FYI I am the one of the organizers at our company of a group that's called "Return to the Community". We have fundraisers through out the year to support our local Charities raising thousands of dollars, collecting clothes, food, school supplies, and Christmas gifts each year in a company of 125 people....Who are you to judge any of us anyways???? Why do you even care how we spend our money????

I can go to a B'way show & lunch...which would cost about $150...for 4 hours total OR....I can go to a casino...with the same money....and it can last for an unknown period of time The point is....I have the money....in cash.... My issue is that people who spend "so much" probably don't have the money...but are borrowing to do so. And then get themselves deep into debt. If you consider this nasty....why don't you research "the causes of the financial crisis". If the people actually have "the cash"....enjoy! melissa Posted August 26, 2011 #143 Share Posted August 26, 2011 We spend a ton of money each cruise. SS bills in thousands. We drink alot of booze, buy jewelry, get spa treatments, buy lots of pictures. We are the a cruise line's dream customer. However, we do try to pay most of it off with cash before we leave the ship. I'm just glad I am not the one paying their bills  But you might be paying their bills... When they declare BK....their bills are forgiven but to make up for it prices rise When they are "bailed out" (mtges)....that's your tax dollars at work If they need govt subsidies...again, your tax dollars at work Again...if people can cover the expenses in cash...good for them. But...it's those who go into debt...... In an case...Carnival sure knows how to make a profit :)
