Is it Live or is it Memorex?- Allure of the Seas Review September 18-25 with Pics!

Usually, on Disney, the characters are escorted by another staffer not wearing a costume who functions as the eyes for the person who can't see what is going on. I thought RC does the same.

It was hit and miss. After nearly running Gloria over, I did see some of the other characters being escorted to the stairways. I don't mean to complain, it was somewhat humorous. If I was to complain. Regular RC crew members were more of a pain about the running track. In the morning, Maintenance workers were doing jobs on this deck, but they were very cautious of passengers using the track. Occasionally I would see crew members enter the track and walk the wrong way on the track to get where they were going One Guest Services Manager did this at the front of the ship where there is a bit of a tunnel near the stairs to the fitness center. I saw him run into a walker who was going the right direction.

I'm 6'2 200 lbs and was in marathn training so I was going around that track at an 8-9 minute per mile pace and had to use extra caution on that corner especially. Can't wait to do it again.

Im hoping someone will give us an answer. We got a balcony ocean view on deck 14. turns out it is right by kids club, is it going to be SUPER noisy?? Is the kids club open all night?

We had table mates who said it wasn't bad. The worse problem, except for people who party all night, is one night per cruise they have a dance party in the solarium that goes on till 3am. We had a deafening bass beat that filled our cabin for about 2 hours after we went to bed. We ended up opening our balcony to let the waves drown that out. AC be dammed.

Fantastic end to your wonderful cruise - thanks for sharing with all of us. We'll be on Allure in February and we can't wait! :)

You are so welcome- have an amazing time on your cruise in February!!! :D

I started reading this review before going on the Allure on 10/20/11 and it is good to see it is still going.

LOL, sorry I couldn't get it all done before you left. I had honorable intentions! ;)

Fantastic review and the Allure was a fantastic ship. When I was reading about what happened to your family in the parade, we actually had a good viewing spot. We were near Starbucks near something called the Shop. There was some lady from RCCL making sure that everybody was behind the line for the parade. She was busy as a lot of people were stepping over the line. The parade was great, but Shrek for some reason didn't come on our side at all.

I'm glad you had a good spot down towards that end. That is basically on the other side from where we were. I'm not sure if Shrek went one way and Fiona the other- maybe that would make sense since I'm not sure if we saw Fiona at all. (I assumed we did and that I just didn't get a pic but maybe we didn't)

This review was so great to read as it got me excited for my Allure cruise. Hope your family has had a good Thanksgiving and hopefully you have some more RCCL ships booked in the future so you will give more reviews like this one. We have Oasis booked next year and it will be a long time between now and October.

Thanks so much, ITA about the wait! We sail on the new Disney Fantasy next September, and not back on RCCL until 2013- planning on Allure 9/22/13!

Enjoy Oasis next Oct!

Awesome review....we will not be on the Allure until 2013 but making all my little notes from everyone elses reviews. Your pictures are great. Thanks again!!!

You're welcome, hope it helps the wait go by a little faster.:) We won't be back on Allure until 2013 ourselves so I know how far away that is!!

Thanks so much for the rest of the story! It's a nice trip down memory lane and our two weeks on Allure!

Believe it or not, even on a B2B, I felt that we didn't see/do everything! It's kind of nice knowing that we'll still have new experiences when we go on Oasis.

I absolutely do believe it- there is just NO way to get it all done.

I have a question about the Little Wonders. Did you just put your lens down to the top? I didn't take any pics of them, but have seen plenty of others' photos. I'll definitely try to see ALL of them on Oasis and take some pics.

I did! It worked well most of the time, sometimes you can see a reflection of my camera in the picture. I didn't try to take a picture down in any of the "binocular" style ones- that I couldn't figure out how to do! LOL! I'd like to say we saw all of them but I'm sure we probably didn't! Haha!

Glad you enjoyed your B2B and have an awesome time on Oasis! thanks so much for reading!! :)

What an awesome review, thank you so much! My husband has been deployed for almost two years and we are doing a BTB in Feb. I am so excited, i can hardly stand it. Thank you soo soo much! Im going to try to email him so he can read your email, hopefully he has the internet time to read through it alL! THANK YOU!

Thanks so much for the compliments, I do hope your husband will be able to read it all- that is a lot of internet time! Yikes! ;)

Hope you and your husband have a terrific time on your B2B- Allure is so amazing! :D

Just when I thought you'd never get around to finishing this thing...;)

Oh you should know by now to never give up on me! I get there...eventually....

It was the best cruise that we'd been on. We can't wait to do it again!!!

Absolutely! I second that!!

Looks like our next time on the Allure will be 9-22-13. We just have to wait until tax return time to book it. At least we get to go on the Disney Fantasy next year. Hopefully that will hold us over until we can get back on the Allure.

Ron

It's a long, long wait.....maybe in the meantime we can win the lottery?:D

WONDERFUL review. Thanks so much for sharing your cruise with us!

So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for reading! :)

Im hoping someone will give us an answer. We got a balcony ocean view on deck 14. turns out it is right by kids club, is it going to be SUPER noisy?? Is the kids club open all night?

I can answer that!!! No, it shouldn't be noisy from the kids club at ALL- the actual kids areas are well isolated from the stateroom areas- to get back to the club area there is a big entranceway and even from the kids club entrance it is 30-40 feet left or right to the stateroom corridors. So, noise transfer from the kids club is not a problem at all. We did hear some muffled music coming from the solarium on the party nights (twenty and escape are outdoor parties held late night) but to be honest with our balcony door closed we couldn't hear it- it was only with the door open.

We thought it was a very good location- very convenient to the pool decks!

Enjoy your cruise!! :)

I really enjoyed your LONG review, I read thru the whole thing over the holiday weekend. Some thoughts -

Awesome! Thanks for taking the time out to give it a read!

We did a B2B on the Allure last May and are veteran cruisers (D+ on RCI plus others), carefully planned, and still didn't get to do all the things we wanted to do and we don't travel with small kids. So don't fret that you didn't cover everything you wanted to.

Looking back I'm amazed we got to as much as we did! Haha!

In St. Thomas the Allure stops at remote Crown Bay because it can't get into Havensight (draft too deep). If you take the Disney Fantasy next year on the Eastern swing you'll see the difference.

We have docked in Havensight before and I think I prefer it- I like all of the shopping nearby. But we had always wondered why we didn't see any iguanas- they don't hang out over at Havensight! Now we know they are over at Crown Bay!

The Viking Crown Lounge at the top of the ship is beautiful, when you go on the Allure again try to get there at least one night, if just for some pictures.

Yep- that was totally on our list and we never made it up there. I really wanted to because on Independence it was D, D+, concierge only! Ah, like you say...next time!!!

We are booked on the Disney Fantasy next December and we are in our 60's and go with another couple also in their 60's with no kids. Adults can enjoy that ship as well as kids.

I agree, I am totally looking forward to it!! :) It's a long wait for us, can't wait to see how the ship turns out!

Once again, one of the best photo reviews we've seen.

Thanks so much for reading, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Have an amazing time on the Fantasy next year!!!

Great review! Did I blink and miss the promised chair hog story?

LOL, yeah that was that purse hogging up the big- and only vacant- table in the WJ on the last morning! :p I know it's awful but we still joke about it all the time about "Mi Bag" the chair hog! It's a horrible inside joke around here! :D Thanks for reading!!!

This is my very first post!!! I've been a lurker for a while reading up on everything Allure of the Seas since we booked our very first cruise. (We are sailing in March 2012.) This has got to be the best review I've ever read. The detail and pics are amazing and well-written. Thank you for providing such valuable information!!!!

Thank you so much for the compliments! I'm so glad it has helped you plan your upcoming cruise!!

My SIL wants to join us on our upcoming cruise on the Allure. Her daughter is 11, just 2 months shy of her 12th birthday. My SIL wants to move her up to the next level (the 12-14 club) so that she can join my daughter, who's turning 13 in March. You mention that there is an "option to move up" in the kids/teen clubs. Does that apply to kids who are close to the next level? Are there any rules on this? Thanks in advance!

Yes, our son was 2 weeks from turning 12 and he was given the option to "move up" to the 12-14 if he so desired. I'm not sure if 2 months like in your niece's case out is too far away, but I got the impression the consideration given to moving up or down was on a case-by case basis. They did tell us that if our son decided to move up, he would have to go do a session in the teen club, and then if he decided to stay and permanently make the move "up" to the 12-14's that he could not move back down to the 9-11's if he changed his mind. He was fine staying with his sister and the younger kids though, we let him choose and that's what he wanted. Hope that helps a little, I don't think you will have any problems with the girls getting to be together! :)

Have a fantastic cruise!!!

Wow, it's over?!?!? lol

I know right? Haha!!!

Great review, and being dragged out over such along period helped to fill the void between now and our time on The Allure. Now, if only you could have dragged it out another 4 or 5 days! ;)

Have an amazing time on Allure! And thanks so much for reading! :D

I'm not sure how close you have to be to go up to the next level. Brendan was less than one month away and he had the option. But again, they told him he'd have to try at least one session in his normal age group before they'd let him change. I don't know if this is always the case. I'd be willing to bet that she won't have a problem especially considering that your daughter is already in the teen club. I would expect them to have her try out a session in the kids club before they let her move on.:)

Ron

PS- Congrats on your first post and welcome to CC!

That's right they did say he would have to do a session in the club he was in the actual age range for. Like Ron said I don't think it will be a problem for your niece to move up. They really do try to bend over backwards to make the cruisers happy. :)

Thanks, Ron!

If you don't mind, I have another newbie type of question. How many nights of formal or dressy kind of clothing did you bring for the Allure cruise? Is it formal every night or just a couple of nights in the 7 days? Thanks!

Well, there are two official "formal" nights- Formal night (on our cruise was night 2- it's slightly different on the Western) and Semi-Formal night (night 6 on the Eastern). The first of the two nights in our experience is much, much more formal than the second. That is also when they have the Captain's reception and most folks truly are dressed to the nines that night. You see mostly suits and jacket/tie on men and cocktail/formal gowns on the ladies. The second "semi" formal night you will see suits/jackets and sportcoats on the men (still a few tuxes but not as many) and dresses/pant suits on the ladies....

...Of course on Allure- with there being so many options- it's kind of a different animal. In fact since we were at Samba the first formal night (and planned it that way) we were only dressed smart casual that evening. We didn't really feel out of place since in the common areas like the Promenade and Entertainment Place you will see folks in all states of dress- from someone in swimsuit/coverups grabbing a bite at Sorrento's to a formal dressed couple in tux/gown getting pictures taken. You see all ends of the spectrum.

I hope that helps a bit! :)

Thank you for the fantastic detailed review and all the photos. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading it and I'm a little sad that it's all over.

Aww, me too! But I'm relieved too! Haha!

I look forward to Sept 2013 when I can read another of your reviews and see how much your lovely children have grown. By the way, Savannah is an awesome dancer.

Oh thank you so much! :)

We will be on the Allure next Dec with our teenagers and I can't wait, only a little more than a year to wait.

Awesome! I'd like to say it will be here before you know it but it sure seems like a long way away now, doesn't it? LOL! Thanks for reading!!!

Well, you know us cruisers -- we see "chair hog" and immediately think pool!

Yeah, I know! Thankfully we had no issues up on the pool deck! :D

I'm surprised she didn't come by and yell at you for taking her table!
I am too- I was worried there'd be quite a scene but thankfully she knew she was in the wrong! It's hard to convey expression in writing but the way she exclaimed "Mi bag!" was just one of the funniest things ever to us and we still joke about it around the house! LOL!!!

To VillageDwellers: Two formal nights on a 7-day cruise. The other nights are "resort casual" -- nice slacks, collared shirts for men; nice slacks, nice tops or dresses for the ladies. Although nice (not worn or torn) jeans are now allowed in the main dining room. Just a little hint -- we each pack two pairs of nice slacks (although I take black capris). A pair and a spare! No sense loading up the luggage with 5 pairs of slacks each!

Excellent advice!

For those of us with no cruise scheduled yet, no problem! Its been great reliving allure. Next cruise will either be Allure or Freedom again.

Sounds pretty darn good to me! LOL! I know we feel kind of naked without our next one booked (after the Disney one) but I'm sure we'll be booking it in the next few months! My Aunt has one of her free curise coupons from the RCCL Visa just sitting on her desk. She's so nonchalant about it- I could never just sit around on a free cruise like that! ;)

Ok, I just don't get it. Now I love Maho beach and can understand why some people can't understand the fun of watching planes take off and land, but getting on the rising tide just for the ride? I thought it was a cool idea and if we wanted to sit and have a drink and watch the scenes change this would be great, but I can't imagine going to an elevator and taking a 15 minute ride. We avoided it so that people who wanted to use it could.

Oh I agree, we did not expect that to be the case- folks just hopping on for the ride, but they do. In fact on our first trip up we really wanted a drink- (and the book) and service was actually hard to get. At least in our experience , the "riders" tend to stick to standing in the front. LOL.

We hadn't brought the kids on before that since we really weren't sure how to handle that -definitely did not want to bring them on in the evening when adults were trying to enjoy their drinks. But we found in the afternoon it seemed to be treated like a Disney ride....hehe...so we went with it and let them have a chance to ride it. Most-if not all- of the folks on it at that time were on it for the ride and were taking pictures and such. :) So , "When In Rome" I guess, right?

Now that you reminded me of the Allure book, that was very helpful in preparation for our cruise. I was given one shortly after Allure's innaugural sailing by one of the moderators. I didn't write it, but after I was done, I did a "pay it forward" type of thing and sent it to another CC member who was preparing to go on an Allure cruise with the instruction to "pay it forward" again. I wonder where it is?

I remember reading that! That is so cool!! :D

I almost knocked Gloria off the ship, good thing she was still there. I was on the running track and her dressing room for the aqua theater show is on that deck at the back of the ship. I came around the corner on a noon time run on a Sea Day and she was walking the wrong way on the track coming around a corner toward the stairs. Not smart! (They should escort those characters or close the track for a few minutes. )

I remember that too! I actually made note of it in case we wanted a close encounter! That was a little too close though! ;)

Wow! You've had a great deal of people thanking you for your review, so I'll just pile on. As an experienced cruise critic member you know how much people appreciate the reviews.

Thanks Bill- that means a lot! :) Your review was so helpful as were many others I read prior to our cruise. (I am pretty sure I read each and every one!) No way could we have gotten as much out of our experience without reading and learning from those who came before us. We are so grateful for the knowledge you and the others shared! The least I could do is pay it forward and help others have an amazing time too!!

Great reviews like this one sure helped pass the time before my cruise. When I got back I enjoyed doing my review and helping out others, now 7 months past, I enjoy reading these reviews to refresh my memory and pick up things I missed.

My wife and I are empty nesters, but we had a great time on this ship anyway. It truly is big enough and has something for everyone. We had very little character interaction, by choice, but it was obvious it was there for you.

Yes, and I agree it does not seem to be too obtrusive for those who are not interested in it!

We were able to get away from kids when we wanted to, but enjoyed people watching and seeing families have a good time. Clearly your kids are great kids, its nice to see your oldest has time for his younger sisters. That may be beneficial 5-10 years from now.

Thank you! :)

I've been debating which will be my next cruise, Freedom again, or Allure again, you've got me leaning toward Allure again. I probably won't make up my mind till after tax time.

Thanks again.

Ha ha, it's tough isn't it? We loved Freedom class too but are a little surprised at the prices- it costs the same for us to go back on Allure so I think that's where we will be too!

Thanks again so much for the compliments!

Usually, on Disney, the characters are escorted by another staffer not wearing a costume who functions as the eyes for the person who can't see what is going on. I thought RC does the same.

Yes, usually they do...LOL poor Gloria must have been abandoned! Haha! :D

I must have missed it too, though she did say it wasn't much of a problem most days for her. It was a little worse on my cruise, I played with my new camera and posted an entire thread called MEET THE ALLURE CHAIR HOGS. but it got removed from the forum. I suspect a few CC members recognized themselves and complained. I may put it back up on my own website and put a link in my signature :p

Oh Bill I really hope you do! That was truly the

BEST. THREAD. EVER. !!! :D

I even tried to find it once through the internet archive/wayback machine but you are right, it has been totally erased from existence. I would love to see it resurrected!

It was hit and miss. After nearly running Gloria over, I did see some of the other characters being escorted to the stairways. I don't mean to complain, it was somewhat humorous. If I was to complain. Regular RC crew members were more of a pain about the running track. Ahh..the running track....another place we didn't make it. And boy I should have! :D

Yep, we could hear it from our room (14574) but only when we had the balcony open. We couldn't hear the bass thump- thank goodness- that would have really annoyed me. I would advise avoiding rooms more forward than 14574 for that reason though...(basically anything forward of the elevators on 14 can probably hear it to some degree).

Truly the most detailed, best written and personally relevant review I have ever read (I will be on Allure in just over 2 weeks with my 9 and 11 year old).

I see you went to Rita's festival. I looked at booking it on line and it said you had to be over 21 years old only only noted the price with alcohol. I also saw that kids are not allowed in specialty restaurants after 7 PM.

How were you able to dine at the restaurant with the kids?

Did you book before the cruise?

Thanks

Dan

Try not to over do it at Christmas (seems like you will be doing that-busy mom) :p

Hmm... Yes we did book the fiesta prior to the cruise. When we booked on-line they had a no alcohol option for $10 per person. Maybe they've sold out of those for your date:confused:. You may want to call RCL and see if they can book it over the phone. The no kids after 7 did not apply at Rita's. At least not for the fiesta. I also noticed a family with what appeared to be under 12 kids waiting to be seated at Samba after 9 pm. So maybe the rule doesn't apply there either.

Enjoy your cruise!

Thanks soooo much for your awesone review.

My family and I were on the Norweigan Epic this past April. That was the BEST VACATION EVA to me.

We are now booked on another cruise this coming April for the Dawn ( adults only ) I AM excited, but not like I was planning the Epic.

Monday and Tuesday I was home sick with the flu and stumbled upon your review. I spent ALL DAY both days reading EVERYTHING you and your beautiful family did on the Allure.....I was smiling from ear to ear and you made me remember all the great time we had on the Epic.....By the time hubby got home Tuesday from work I told him we HAD to book the Allure for 2013!!!!

Thanks so much for making two sick days the most fun. I was snuggled in a blanket and enjoying your vacation. I can not wait to take the family to Rita's, and now I think the Dawn is just gonna bore me :( I'll be waiting for the family one for another year..oh well at least I got him to say

"YES" So thanks again for the awesome post

Have fun on the Disney cruise. I can tell you and your family always have fun anyway. The vacation is what you make it....:D

I guess all good things have to come to an end........ I very much enjoyed reading your review and looking at the pictures. You did a fabulous job. THANK YOU.

We will be on the Allure for 5 days in January. I made notes as I read your review so that we can take maximum advantage of our time onboard. Although we would like to go to a local beach in Falmouth (Time and Place?), I am thinking we might just stay onboard and see more of the ship.

Wishing all much happiness, good health and wonderful vacations to you and your family.

Hi Dan, like Ron said we did book prior to the cruise and we did have the $10 no-alcohol option available. And like he mentioned Rita's does not follow the no-kids-after-7 rule...and apparently Samba did not as well. I do believe our kids were the only kids at Rita's but there were several kids at Samba when we left- probably between 9-10 PM. Even one in a high chair- so young kids, not teens or anything.

We did not see any children of any ages in the Central Park specialty restaurants though. We were there pretty late for those though (after 8).

Hope that helps a bit! thanks for the compliments, I'm so glad you enjoyed the review.

Hi Kathy!

Thanks so much for your compliments! I'm so glad the review has helped you plan your cruise!

We have not yet been to Falmouth but want to, so our next Allure cruise will be a Western. I'm not sure yet what we will do there either. Have you been before? I have seen come pics of gorgeous beaches!

But yes, during the port stops (aside from Nassau) is absolutely the best time to be onboard. We got back early from St. Thomas and those were a great couple of hours on the pool deck.

Whatever you decide, have a great cruise and thanks for the well wishes!

Thanks

Dan

We were on the Allure last week. We did Rita's Fiesta with a group we met on Cruise Critic. There were several kids there. You have to book them for the Without Cocktails option for $10. The with Cocktails option is a great deal at only $20 with three drinks.

We brought our DD to Samba's without a problem and saw several other families with kids. FYI - the Samba's special is great. MTD people can go to Samba's for half price on the first night. We really enjoyed it and the price break was a nice treat.

Our DD (13) joined us for Chops too. Saw several other kids there as well.

Jen & Ron:

Not sure if you're still checking out this thread, but just wanted to thank you both for the review. I tend to be a "little" OCD and have already started to read and make notes about Allure even though I am not cruising until November. It appears that you have a wonderful family who is making lots of memories - cherish these moments, as time speeds by quickly!

Thanks again,

Barb
