tinkerme1 Posted May 3, 2005 #26 Share Posted May 3, 2005 I'm glad to see that RCCL did a good job in compensating you for your lost luggage. I guess the $300 limit didn't apply? We always use luggage straps that are bright yellow with our names on them for identification purposes. It certainly stands out like a sore thumb! OPSoccermom Posted May 4, 2005 #27 Share Posted May 4, 2005 Way to go Suzi! Thanks for the closure. At least we know that if this haapens to us and we are persistent, we may see some compensation.
1corona4u Posted May 4, 2005 #28 Share Posted May 4, 2005 That's great! It's a shame people have lost luggage, and it's also a shame that we have to worry about people, on our same cruise, stealing our luggage.:(
Sailfish Posted May 4, 2005 Author #29 Share Posted May 4, 2005 Along with my inventory list, I wrote a very serious (albeit polite) letter to Royal Caribbean about monitoring the baggage claim area in Port Canaveral. I can't say for sure if someone accidently took my bag, or who exactly was at fault - a passenger or porter. I also don't know if my bag went missing in the port or on the ship. What I do know is this: porters are grabbing bags off the luggage carousel left and right - passengers not always paying attention. And upon leaving this "secured area" there is no baggage checks in place. People and porters can leave with any bag! This has got to change! In my conversation with Risk Management personnel at the cruise line, I was told that as so "few" bags are never located, it's not cost effective for the cruise line or port authority to have personnel doing checks. It's cheaper to settle claims than it is to have a person checking baggage claim tags. This is the same reason most airports no longer have people checking bags as you exit. It's frustrating, isn't it! There's not much you can do.
Guest OBAYbee Posted May 4, 2005 #30 Share Posted May 4, 2005 Has anyone used the GlobalBagTag? I was curious for feedback if you have. I also came across tracetagsinc.com where the person finding your luggage gets a $20.00 reward. I know there are people programming tags to their PDA’s. That would probably work on a luggage carousel in an airport, not on a cruise ship. I haven’t tried any of the above but if you have or heard of someone who has I would love any feedback. aawdds Posted December 12, 2011 #31 Share Posted December 12, 2011 Looks like I'm in the same position! Just got off the Mariner this morning in Galveston only to find my children's luggage but not mine nor my husband's. I can't imagine why anyone would want our luggage. There's no alcohol or valuables. Just our clothes...so unless someone is our size...it was a waste to take it. I'm still hoping to receive a phone call tomorrow from RCCL stating a time our bags will be delivered. We will buy new suitcases and keeping them with us at all times. The expense to replace all our clothes...

BND Posted December 12, 2011 #33 Share Posted December 12, 2011 I don't see how anyone can mistakenly take someone's bag if they are paying any attention at all. It's pretty simple to check the luggage tags that everyone should have on their bags. We have very identifiable tags as my DH's company used to take everyone (and a guest) on a trip every year and provided tags for each trip that were unique for that trip with the company name also on them. There's NO way that anyone paying any attention at all could mistake our bags for theirs. It takes about 1 second to confirm you have your own bag before you walk out of the terminal. Seriously, it's just laziness and not paying attention.
griffy116 Posted December 12, 2011 #34 Share Posted December 12, 2011 As embarrassing as it is to admit here, we accidentally arrived home with an extra piece of luggage. We went on the group with a LARGE group of family members. We all met at my Mom and Dad's prior to leaving on the cruise. When we were gathering everyone's luggage, my parents needed help. My Dad pointed at a piece of luggage and one of the relatives loaded it into our van. We should have been more careful and double checked the tag. We drove from FL to GA and when all the luggage was deposited in their garage, one lone suitcase was left sitting there. It had a last name, and name of the ship on the outside luggage tag. We unzipped the suitcase to see if it had a name and address or phone number inside. It didn't. We didn't feel right scrambling into their personal items so we called RCI and told them we had erroneously taken a piece of luggage that didn't belong to us. They sent UPS to our house, picked it up and I assume it was returned to the owners. It points out the importance of putting that 8-1/2 x 11 piece of paper with at least a last name and a cell phone/house phone number that someone can call to notify you that it's been found. We would have called the owners to at least let them know, had the information been readily available. We still feel horrible about it.
Cigar King Posted December 12, 2011 #35 Share Posted December 12, 2011 I don't think I saw this suggestion in any of the other replies, but, you might consider checking with your credit card to see if they offer any automatic insurance. It can't hurt, and they may be able to cover your loss.
sparky-elpaso Posted December 12, 2011 #36 Share Posted December 12, 2011 I just ordered some bright yellow straps from Magellan's with our initials on them. Hopefully that should keep someone from taking our bags by mistake. :)
