I'm only looking for a good way to give out my own tips. Would you have an envelop and put say $6/day/pp to the two waiters and an envelop with $4/day/pp to the room stewards?

Please no name calling or arguments. Don't look if you hate tip questions. Just some good advise from others that may do this.

Thank you

You should tip what ever you feel comfortable with. I do auto tips because it is convienant for me and then if I want to give extra I do. But do what you want to do and not what someone on here tells you should do. Only you know your financial status and what feels good to you and yours.

I prepay the auto tips so I don't have to worry about them later and take envelopes to give extra to those who go above and beyond. Give whatever you see fit and what you think is fair. No two people will agree on how much. Also, don't forget to give a couple of bucks when and if you get room service.

Learn origami & fold the bills into the the shape of your state bird, attach to a key chain, also from your home state and IF you really want to get clever, artfully disguise all of the above in your own original towel animal design made from.... you guessed it, a t-shirt from your home state. Leave in cabin for your steward to delight in finding.:D

Sorry, couldn't resist!!!

I tip as I go. Because we don't eat in the dining room every night I tip both the head and assistant waiter $5 each every night we dine. I never tip the Maitre' D as they do nothing for me. My room steward I tip in the beginning and at the end of the cruise pending on service, I don't believe I have ever not tipped my steward extra as they have always been wonderful. I tip $1 extra when I order my specialty coffee's from the coffee bar, and if you play in the casino a lot like we do and receive the free drinks card, I tip them $1 for bringing my free drinks. I always tip room service at least $2 minimum. I never put anything in an envelope, its a waste, I'd rather hand it to them as I would in any other customer service establishment as it feels more personal to me. I hope this helps, you do NOT have to abide by Carnival's tipping policies. I give more when the service is outstanding and less when it is awful. Those are really the only people I hand tip.

Were you asking for creative ways or just the method? Just checking...

In any case, my daughter will be almost 15 on our next not-yet-booked cruise in 2012, but what we used to do was to have her either draw a picture or write a thank you note and include it in the envelope and give it to the waiters and room steward. I don't think I can get her to do it next year :D

I auto tip yet have always tipped above as the service we get is great. I bring small thank you notes with me, write a personal note telling them why their service was so great and what it meant to me then enclose the extra tip. Normally our room steward we give an extra 40.00 to 60.00 to as he gives us the most personal service as well as the same for the head waiter.

Would you give for example to the head waiter $4 and $2 to his assistant per person/ per day, or go 50/50 or just put it all in a envelope and let them split it.

Thanks to the good people of cc for the ideas, the humor and for no flames.

I would give it to the head waiter/waitress and let them decide who gets what.

Not with, the only problem with the way you are tipping is the people on the Lido deck (if you are not eating in the DR you must be eating there) are not getting tips if you take off the auto tips.

Don't flame me but not fair IMO.

I guess there is no real completely fair way, but do not want to use the auto tip system either. Just looking for some reasonable ideas.

Thanks

The only really completely fair way- leave the auto tips in place;), that way every member of the crew that deserves part of it receives part of it and no one gets left out.

We do not autotip; we have the tips on our account when we sail - this way if for any reason we need to remove them we can.

We always bring an envelope on the last night of the cruise and tip the head waiter extra, he will be certain of sharing it with his/her team. We leave an extra envelope in the cabin as we are leaving with a thank you note and some extra cash - I often think they appreciate the thank you note as much as the extra money. We bring a bunch of extra 1.00 bills to give to for room service. The bar servers have tips included on the ticket so no need for extra there.

As everyone has said there is no right or wrong way to tip and tipping is at the discretion of the individual; if they didn't intend for you to use your common sense they would make them mandatory ;)

Im thinking you mean you dont prepay tips.. the auto tip is what is applied to your S&S onboard account some time during the cruise.

there are prepaid tips and auto tips.

Since it is two separate people- I would do two separate envelopes.

How do youknow that the head waiter will give the assistant their share.

Curious question- since you dont want to automatic tips-- how will you divy up the gratuity for the lido buffet people?

We also tip the waitstaff and room stewards a little extra. I agree that you should tip the headwaiter and his assistant seperately. In the past, we have encountered two headwaiters who we actually gave less than the assistant because of attitudes. Although, we did tip the headwaiters, I would have have trusted either to give a portion of a tip to their assistant.

Perfect answer- couldn't agree more!

In addition to the auto gratuity, I have gotten into the habit of pre-printing evelopes before I leave home (leanred this tip from my trips to Disney World- leaving tips for Mousekeeping...;)) so I bring envelopes with me from home that say something like " Thank you for all of your hard work- from the Smith Family in Cabin ___". Sometimes my kids will help with coloring pictures on the envelopes, writing their names, etc. Then once on board, I put in what I feel is appropriate and then give the envelopes to servers in MDR, Cabin steward, counselors in Camp Carnival, etc at the end of our cruise...

Take care!

Diana

sorry, but i have never been served at the lido deck. actually, i prefer to eat in the mdr for my three meals, but there are times they close that now. so i am forced to serve myself.

i also don't tip at cafeterias or at buffets on land.

I leave the auto tips on.

BUT

I usuall give out cash to those who I feel deserve extra.

I used to go to the main desk to get envelops and break large bills on the last day. DON'T do this. There are loooooooooong lines at the desk - it will take time to get change. The envelops are on the side of the desk - just take a few. Get your change before the last night, that is what I do now, unless you want to hear numerous reasons why people remove their tips (best was that the person did not eat on the ship) as entertainment value.

I have tipped the wine stewart extra, that I give him cash in his hand.

If you give out all your tips in cash, put your name & table#/cabin# on the envelops, so the person will know who gave him the tip.

When one leaves autotips on the S&S account, does he/she get something to put in the envelopes to show that the waiter (or whoever) has gotten the suggested gratuity? We always tip extra, and I take thank you notes from home, but I was just wondering how the person knows he/she will get the standard gratuities also.

Thanks for an answer, :)

You may never have been 'served' - but who cleared the table where you sat? Who cleared it after you left? Who washed your dishes? Who kept the buffet lines full of food? The person who works hard, for tips, to make a decent living. Just because they didn't hand you your food doesn't mean they didn't 'serve' you in some way. They did.

on a ship, the people i am already tipping through my autotips. they are the same people, and often you will see your actual mdr server up there. my 5.50 a day tips are for 3 meals....not one.

it's funny how some people are hoodwinked into worrying about washing dishes and the "kitchen help" upstairs, but no one worries about these same individuals downstairs.
