Whales in April......

April is past the peak season, but you never know. We were in Kona in very early December, which is before peak season, and saw a pod of beaked whales while out fishing with friends. We always go out with high hopes but low expectations - minimizes the disppointment if you don't see something! Ask the whale watch tour operators what their experience is - a good one will be honest about your chances of seeing something.

Depends when in April?? End, definately not, for humpbacks. It's about a 30 day migration, and the first are seen on their way back end of April. Even early May, there is close to 100% sightiings at one of the first feeding areas- Dixon Passage, just south of Ketchikan.

You may get a look at the stragglers- whcih would be mother's and calves, along with an unrelated male escort.

We were in Maui a couple of years ago the last week of April. We saw a couple playing off the coast and tons when we did a snorkel tour out to Lanai. But it's totally hit and miss, it is the end of the season and we got lucky. We even had a mama and a baby go right under our zodiac.

We were in Maui from April 10 - 19 in 2011 and saw lots of humpbacks. We went on a whale watching trip with Pacific Whale Foundation... i found my confirmation from PWF and the date we went was April 14. We saw many whales that day. We were alongside mother and baby whales a couple of times and saw some wonderful sights.

We also went snorkelling on April 17, and saw several whales from the boat that day too, along with lots of spinner dolphins.

I recall seeing whales a couple of times while driving between Kihei and Lahaina. We also were lucky enough to have a whale performing for us while we ate dinner in Kihei on our last night on April 18.
