The Liberty "Tilt"

It was never my intention to scare anyone with my question. As you can see from my first post we are 'seasoned' cruisers! In all the cruises we have taken (almost all with Carnival) we have never experienced anything like what happened. Right now we have a Carnival cruise scheduled in March for our entire family (20), and we are very excited. Thanks to all who have replied. Obviously it has happened before and it appears we will never know for sure what really happened.

I remember this one, mainly because it was the biggest thing on the news here in Houston for a couple days.

This was on the Ecstasy in 2010.

I imagine it happens more than one would think. This incident was due to a loose buoy, basically "sea trash" for lack of a better term.

We were on the Celebration in 2000 when we encountered a cold front and were tilted from a sudden wind gust. I happened to be in the casino at the time and there were a lot of winners on those machines that push the quarters over the edge. Now every cruise we go on, if it gets a little rough, my husband always checks those machines, lol.

The Volga River cruise vessel, Bulgariya, capsized and sank last July after attempting a sharp "come about" maneuver in sudden storm conditions. Built way back in 1955, she "listed" to starboard her entire life, with reasons and rumors being peddled wholesale, with uneven distribution of ballast to offset design flaws among them.

She was overloaded with passengers, some unregistered - and maintenance on her aging structure was questionably documented. 122 souls lost, including several dozen schoolchildren. In this tragedy, the Captain and his wife went down with the ship. It took a catastrophe like this to awaken Russia's government to crack down on sloppy inspections and irresponsibility by companies to whom public safety is entrusted.

La, la, la I'M NOT LISTENING!

I knew I should not have opened this thread. I am on the Liberty in 12 days.

Happy thoughts. Happy thoughts.

I am feeling a bit like this, and I am usually an information junky.

.

But as far as this is a Carnival concern- no. Cruise ships-yes. Ships-yes.

We were on the Liberty too when the "tilt" happened! It was a very weird feeling. I was on our balcony reading when we started to tilt. Never did "hear" what actually happened except the announcement when they said it was a technical problem?? Still had a great cruise!!!

Please dont worry...nothing, even those above mentioned occurences by me were ever scary. The Liberty is a great ship. Sailed on her in 2009, and loved that ship and cruise so much, that I have booked the same ship again for later this year. Relax and have a great cruise footballbabe3:)

Thanks soo much I was really starting to worry

It's ironic that I opened this thread this morning. In light of the Concordia accident, DH told me last night about his Liberty 2004 cruise out of Norfolk, VA on which there were was also a random list. What a coincidence! LOL At least maybe some of the people preparing to sail her have an idea what to watch out for & that it's (hopefully) not dangerous... I know that there is supposedly a major whale thoroughfare off of our coast. I wonder if it's related to that? We'll probably never know...

For those of you booked on upcoming Liberty cruises, DON'T WORRY. It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful ships I have ever been on and I would cruise on her again in a heart beat. Go on your cruise and have a blast.

Thanks, we are going on the Liberty on Saturday. But after reading this thread and considering the recent Costa tragedy, I am a little nervous. We have cruised before but never with an infant under 12 months. So the fact that we are traveling with our 9 month old and 4 year old and then hearing these stories, makes me one crazy worried mommy. :(

From John's Facebook this morning...

I had received a few comments about a situation involving a "list" on the Carnival Liberty 2 weeks ago, and had been asked what happened and just wanted to clear up a couple of points for everyone. The ship informs me that there was an announcement made by the Cruise Director from the bridge, as instructed by the Captain, after the slight listing took place. He indicated that it resulted from a technical issue wihich was addressed immediately.

Thanks everyone.

I was on the Liberty during the "list"

While a bit unusual, not the least bit dangerous.

The most danger came from all the rumors and BS stories scaring people.

Captain / crew drunk

Rogue wave (on a perfectly flat sea day)

Swerved to miss 1 - 2 - 3 whales

Stabilizer broken (this from a drunk frat girl who should know)

Auto pilot glitch ( This from a seasoned navy man who might know)

It was a hoot and it did not affect a wonderful cruise.

Rolfe

24 trips on a lot of ships!

We too were on the Liberty during the "tilt". I was in the Lido buffet pushing my 18 month old grandson in a stroller when it happened. While it probably seemed worse than it really was, but I did have to hang onto to something to be able to stand. There was quite a bit of chaos in the buffet area- lots of plates and cups fell and were all over the floor. All of the salt / pepper and ketchup containers slid off the tables.

This was our first cruise and I have to say that in the few split seconds when it was started to tilt and then seemed to keep going, I was fearful that it might not stop. It had been very calm up to that point.

We took the Behind the Fun tour on Friday and had a chance to talk to Captain Bovo about the incident. He indicated that they did not know precisely what had caused it but that they suspected a software problem in the autopilot system. The "blackbox" was going to be off-loaded while in port last Saturday and analyzed. He said that he thought that the tilt was about 5 degrees. My sense from what was happening in the buffet was that it might have been a bit more than that, especially since a lot of the water in the pools spilled out and was running back into the ship. At the peak, all you could see out of the port windows was water and only sky out of the starboard side.

It was a great cruise and I would not hesitate to go again.

We were also on the Carnival Liberty on January 7th. I was opening the room safe and felt a sudden tilt to the port side of the ship. I opened the cabin door and the room stewards were in the hallway and looked very concerned.

The cruise director used the emergency system to notify us that the situation was under control and was to believed to be a one-time occurence.

BTW, our mandatory drill took place before we left Miami however, we were not to bring our life vests with us as we could review the safety procedures on the TV.

We will be traveling on the Costa Atlantica on Jan 18th. I hope that the captain and crew will adhere to the strict safety procedures put in place.

We have sailed with Costa many times.

Our prayers and sympathy are with all of the people affected by this tragedy.

Serenade of the Seas 2004, 12 degree list at speed. The official unofficial reason was a incorrect input of course change, while ship was at high speed. Broken dishes, sloshed pools, elevator fire...no biggie. See review linked in sig below.

Everybody is on this new Muster Drill kick after Costa...I just don't think it matters for guests. Training for crew? Yea, I support more of that.

I was on the Valor in October and the ship did list to the port side( I think) I noticed it right away and so did other people in my group I would guess maybe 10-15 degress to the port side. It did not last long ,but long enough.
