parentsto3boyz Posted March 20, 2012 #76 Share Posted March 20, 2012 I've seen some of you talented folk have created door signs for your cabins. The ones I'm interested in in particular are the ones where it is a picture of the ship, with your sailing dates, and maybe names of the members of your party. Is this something you've created from scratch (and may be willing to create for me :D) or is there a website where you can do it? And what about having it laminated? How do you get it to stick/stay on the door? Thanks in advance! I was thinking about doing this when my son turns 12 on our cruise. I think its a great idea, people who don't like it can look the other way when they walk by!!
penguinscott Posted March 23, 2012 #77 Share Posted March 23, 2012 First of all, if you decide to use names, which I suggest you don't, don't include your last name. You don't want strangers knowing your room number and name! Second, don't be a spoil sport. If we want to decorate our doors, let us! Not everyone has to :p Third, tape if fine to use, just don't use super sticky tape, like duct tape. Masking tape works swell as does a bit of scotch tape. Fourth, most doors seem to be metalic and I went to vistaprints . com and ordered a car door magnet for free (just pay $5 shipping). It has my user name and the CC web address with a photo of a beach and palm tree. I can use it over and over and don't have to worry with tape. I felt left out on my Carnival cruise when others were so festive and mine was just dull and drab. Have fun!

Has my CC handle and the words "Cruise Critic member." Also had some made up for Cabin Crawls.
vjmatty Posted March 26, 2012 #79 Share Posted March 26, 2012 Interesting. And do you also do the same at hotels, motels and resorts? Hank No, but I don't join Roll Calls for hotel stays, or have year-long discussions with others who will be in the hotels during my vacation. I've also never stayed in the same hotel room for two straight weeks, as I have with a cruise cabin. :) I think a cruise ship is a little bit tighter community than a hotel or resort..... you have the same people together for one or two weeks, whereas hotels have people coming and going daily. Even beyond fellow CCers, I find I get to know and recognize people on a cruise ships, whereas the person in the hotel room next to mine, I probably couldn't pick out of a crowd of two. ;) And cello56, these are for you, glad I'm not the only one with a 4-dog minimum-
cello56 Posted March 26, 2012 #80 Share Posted March 26, 2012 And cello56, these are for you, glad I'm not the only one with a 4-dog minimum- I love them!! Are they all Italian Greyhounds? We call them Iggies at our house!!
vjmatty Posted March 26, 2012 #81 Share Posted March 26, 2012 I love them!! Are they all Italian Greyhounds? We call them Iggies at our house!! Yup.. all Iggies, and most with appropriate Italian names: Prada, Versace, Fendi... the last one is named Anubis because she always puts her ears straight up in the air which makes her look like the Egyptian god. I would love to get a full sized greyhound.... they are so docile and such sweet dogs. Maybe someday.... :o
princessangi Posted April 12, 2012 #82 Share Posted April 12, 2012 Just stumbled upon this thread. We always decorate our doors, it just adds to the fun and excitement of the trip for us. Last year we took magnetic white boards with markers. Each day or night we left funny quips or quotes on our kids doors. Other people got in on the fun. No names on the doors, but lots of fun decorations. Usually go to Party City or Dollar Tree for fun stuff.
mamajules Posted April 12, 2012 #83 Share Posted April 12, 2012 Love some of the ideas on this thread. I had not decorated my door before my cruise on the Legend in 2009, Saints & Sinners group cruise. We could print out the signs for our door. There were a lot of that group on my deck, so I got lots of knocks, visits, etc (we all did) since I had it on the door. Loved the fun and sense of community. Definitely planning some fun stuff for my cruise over Halloween :D
rockfsh Posted April 13, 2012 #84 Share Posted April 13, 2012 (edited) Here's a sign I made for our Roll Call on an upcoming wine cruise. Use blu tack putty. Leaves no trace behind. Edited April 13, 2012 by rockfsh

The Inspiration was our first cruise and we loved it! and to answer you question - yes, we do the signs ourselves (and we do it because our son can find the cabin better and we have gotten lots of positive comments) and if you go on another cruise, i would be happy to make one for you! We actually have found that sticky tack (the blue kind) works brilliant on any door and it doesn't leave any mess behind. here are two pics - click on them to make them bigger. Deamagoli Posted June 3, 2012 #88 Share Posted June 3, 2012 I use the peel and stick magnets from office depot, they are meant to stick to business cards. I also use a plastic party store table cloth as my background that way nothing can bleed through to the door and they don't weigh very much. Then I can just use magnets on the backs of all the pictures and place them wherever I want. We usually only decorate the door when the kids are with us, but this year we cruise on my Husband's birthday so I am going to do the door while he is at the casino...I hope he likes it. DaisyMay810 Posted June 4, 2012 #89 Share Posted June 4, 2012 I've sailed twice on the Disney Wonder and not all folks decorate their doors, but the few that did were great! We did and had a blast doing it. It made it so easy to find our room down a long hall way. Here's mine

Russell in MD Posted June 5, 2012 #92 Share Posted June 5, 2012 (edited) We began "decorating" our doors a number of years ago with a Redskins helmet shaped plastic window cling thing. It made finding our cabin so easy we went more legit a couple cruises later. I went to the hardware store and bought some magnetic HVAC vent covers, they come in like a 3 pack. Then cut one down to size, its like 5x8 or something. I took some construction paper that had a sand/beach print on it and cut it to size as well, then spayed the magnet with spray adhesive and laid it over. Then I added a few travel stickers from the craft store. Tasteful and not too large It has been on our last 5-6 cruises. Its a nice touch I think. 0bnxshs Posted June 5, 2012 #93 Share Posted June 5, 2012 I plan to decorate my cabin door on my Monarch cruise this coming Monday with photos of my Retired Racing Greyhounds. Why you ask? Two reasons. 1) I am taking my visually impaired Mother In Law on this cruise for her birthday. She has no central vision, but has peripheral sight. Instead of struggling to find our cabin, she will no trouble at all now. Best part is that she will not even realize that I have done this for her. 2) I promote Greyhound adoption whenever I can! Amen to both reasons! As someone who has recently become vision impaired, I can very much appreciate how much this will help your MIL. Decorate away if it pleases you! :D
mszpolaris Posted June 6, 2012 #94 Share Posted June 6, 2012 Decorating doors is so exciting! I usually get on the ship as early as possible, so I have time to tour the ship on my own, unpack, and decorate my door :) Last time I put a giant poster on my door, got many compliments on it as well as many thanks since people would wander through their hall at the wee hours of the morning looking for their room. Last cruise I saw a door with pictures of the group all over it, that evening, the 10 or so pictures ended up on doors up and down the hall! MszKitty Posted July 17, 2012 #96 Share Posted July 17, 2012 Personally, I like the idea and may do it for my cruise on Carnival Breeze. On most of the ships, you can see all the doors down the corridor. But on the Breeze the doors are set back a bit and you can't see your door or your decoration until you are right there, defeating the purpose of putting up decorations to distinguish your door from all the others down the long corridor of same-same doors. (BTW...I still decorated mine, its just that no one saw it until they were right in front of our room.)
glomarrone Posted July 18, 2012 #97 Share Posted July 18, 2012 Thanks for the information about the passageways on The Carnival Breeze. I really appreciate your reply. I noticed that you have gone and are going again on the Poesia for a music themed cruise. I am going on that ship in Feb. for an Irish Music & dance themed cruise. I assume that you enjoyed the ship if you are returning. Anything that I should be aware of about this cruiseline? Enjoy your cruise. Gloria. glomarrone Posted July 18, 2012 #98 Share Posted July 18, 2012 Hi, I loved your post about decorating your door on cruise ships. I have never done this before but am thinking about it for my TA on the Carnival Breeze. I hope that nobody takes my door sign or moves it to someone else's door. :) Gloria
Travelinmom06 Posted July 18, 2012 #99 Share Posted July 18, 2012 We just came back from the Mediterranean on Grandeur (rccl), it was our 25th anniversary so I had a photo collage of the past 25 years printed at Costco and a big 25 sign for our door. Unfortunately our cabin was all the way at the front so not many people noticed it but our direct neighbors commented and our waiter noticed it when he picked up the room service order in the middle of the night. I did only see one other decorated door, but I would do it on our next cruise...maybe my 50th! I think it's a fun thing!
Mara Suung Posted August 22, 2012 #100 Share Posted August 22, 2012 :) Not sure why some people get worked up about door decorations. I figure if you want them go for it. If you don't, then don't. :DMy DD and I will be hanging a fun sign/picture or something with a suction cup that has a hook. Surely that won't hurt the door. Although I have only cruised on river ships so far, it is easy to walk past your cabin when you are tired or whatever.;) I see nothing wrong with a little personalizing. Spent a week at a high end all inclusive a few weeks ago and hung our personalization on the patio door, so we could find our room easily from the beach and pathways. All the buildings looked very similar. No harm, no foul.
