Anybody know what the rules are now on e-cigs ?

I'm just starting to try them out.

Cruising with Princess again in October.

Found this statement in the Cruise Answer Book:

"Electronic Cigarettes

The use of electronic cigarettes is permitted in all areas onboard with the exception of dining areas and the Princess Theater. However, should a fellow passenger in the vicinity feel inconvenienced and complain, even after being told the difference between electronic cigarettes and real cigarettes, we will ask the passenger to refrain from smoking the electronic cigarette."

Earlier this month, I used them in my cabin, and at the blackjack table in the casino (all tables were non-smoking) and had no problems. It seems quite a few people from the UK are trying them too.

I used e cigs on a 49 day cruise around South America without any problems at all. Most of the staff knew what they were and no passengers complained about me using them. Mine don't look at all like a cigarette.

I did have one passenger cough at me on an outside deck, when they realized it was vapor not smoke they apologized to me for their mistake and we had a good laugh about it.

I was sensitive to other passengers and used them with discretion in the casino, night club, lounges and cabin.

I just returned from the Mediterranean voyage of the Ruby Princess. We sailed from Venice on August 28th, 2013.

As a long time cruiser, I was surprised to find the Ruby short of smoking areas for the smokers. So, as has been mentioned, the areas that do have smoking were heavily filled with smokers.

I understand that people don't want to be around smoke and smokers. On the Ruby Princess there are very few places that one can smoke. There is no place that you can have a drink and smoke except in the casino, where some nights are non-smoking. If you are a smoker, regular or casual, don't plan on smoking on the Ruby Princess. Balconies are totally non-smoking as well.

Just off a 4 day sampler cruise out of Southampton.

Did not experience any problems with people deciding to sneak a cigarette on their balconies, which was great.

Didn't go into the Casino, but there was a strong smell of smoke around the doorways, so we used the upper entrance to the theatre.

Wall mounted ashtrays were provided on the Promenade Deck 7 starboard side, but I didn't see any signs to indicate to passengers where the smoking areas were. There were relatively few smokers there, but I was surprised to see members of the ships crew smoking there as well.

There were no smokers or ashtrays in Skywalkers lounge when we looked round during the daytime ( when it was described as a quiet reading room with spectacular views) but it still smelt strongly of stale smoke.

The smoking area supposedly by the Tradewinds bar on Deck 16, was not clearly marked at all, with the result that people had decided to smoke on both sides of the bar and on loungers over halfway down the deck, making it difficult to avoid accidentally encroaching into smoky areas.

I think Princess would do well to put up clearer signs indicating where passengers are welcome to smoke, and when they are leaving a smoking permitted area. Even the most savvy of us can take a while to work out which is port and which is starboard, especially at slow speed on a calm sea with a tailwind! There will still be those who choose to disrespect the comfort of others, but at least it should be very obvious which areas smokers can relax in, and the rest of us can avoid.

Had a wonderful cruise on the Grand Princess to Mexico out of SF. (Sept 17-27)

The new smoking policy continues to force smokers into the Casino, where with the open doors, the smoke floods the Piazza making any movement there untenable to those of us who are allergic to the smoke. And it just plain smells bad even if you're not... As the cruise continued, the smoke only got worse, such that the last three nights, the smoke was drifting into the Da Vinci Dining Room where we had our meals. Thankfully we were far enough from the doorway that it was only noticeable on the last night. As it was, we could smell the smoke every time we went to dinner since the smoke filled the area around the entrance to the dining room. (which was on the opposite side of the Piazza from the Casino) The smoke also drifted into the Library area which is past the Crown Grill on Deck 7 (the Casino is on Deck 6).

I just don't understand why they can't have the doors to the Casino closed. Doing so would mitigate the worst of the smoke and at least make the Piazza bearable. As it was, I did not spend any time in any of the shops in the Piazza. On the plus side, it kept me from spending money there...

We haven't been on the Grand in years, but there was none of the problems you described on the Golden or the Emerald since the new smoking policy went into effect. I am sensitive to tobacco smoke and there was only a little odor near the casino entrance. I will agree that the Golden had a new casino built on the Promenade deck in 2009 and the Emerald is also much newer than the Grand and they both may have better exhaust systems as a result. The Grand is the oldest of the class and there may be an issue with her exhaust system, but if true it is probably an isolated case.

Last December on the Golden, we couldn't stand waiting for the elevator by the starboard exit of the Princess Theater, the odor was so strong. So maybe it depends on how much smoking is going on each night in the casino.

The problem on the earlier Grand class ships is the location of the cigar bar on Fiesta deck between the forward elevators and the Princess Theater. The doors are always open and the cigar and cigarette smell is very strong in the hallway outside of the cigar bar and even to the elevators and, if the forward door was left open, the forward part of the hallway to access the window suites. As long as the door was closed there was no problem in the hallway and we never had a smoke smell in our cabin. You might have been smelling the smoke coming up from Fiesta deck. I don't know why they don't keep those doors closed :mad: They finally relocated the cigar bar to the front of the casino starting with the Crown :):)

Hello All,

Any recent experiences on the Grand Princess? Specifically - is there still a smoking section somewhere near the aft adult pool/bar? Trying to decide weather to book a cabin forward near the cigar lounge or preferably at the aft end (but only if there is still a smoking section there). Thanks - Happy Sailing everybody!

My husband and I just returned from a California Coastal cruise on the Sapphire. He is a smoker and it was a very real concern for us when Princess banned balcony smoking. This cruise was the test to see if we would be able to continue cruising or if the logistics of trying to smoke onboard would prove too cumbersome.

The indoor smoking areas were in Churchill’s or the Casinothough he never used either area, but we did see people sitting in an area in the Casino smoking. There were two outdoor areas – Promenade Deck toward the back on the port side and on Deck 15 in the aft on the (I believe) starboard side. He mostly used the Promenade Deck until rude people who happened to also be smokers drove him out and up to the aft deck. He also used e-cigarettes on the balcony from time to time. I am not impervious to the smell of smoke by any means, but I never experienced overwhelming smoke smells reported by some walking through the Casino or even stopping to play a machine or two. Certainly when I stayed with him when he smoked on the Promenade Deck the smell of smoke was whisked away by the breeze almost immediately. It would be nice if a place more protected from the weather was provided as I am concerned about our Alaska cruise next year, but perhaps when the weather is more inclement that is addressed.

There is a covered section with tables, chairs and couches on Deck 15 aft, port side. Other areas are starboard side of the Promenade Deck (7), the casino and the cigar lounge (both on Deck 6).

Thanks for the info! Wondering if it is the same of similar on the Crown? I am a smoker, but a kind one. I wont puff in your face or smoke where I am not supposed to smoke. I do like that there is a decent area with chairs etc. to smoke outside. Wish they would allow cigars though..DH and the others we are going with enjoy their cigars and the outdoors.

I've been on the Ruby twice this year, last time last month, smoking areas are:

The Casino,

On non-smoking days in the Casino the Speakeasy (always open) in the Casino and you get waiter service for drinks.

Sky deck port side Tradewinds bar, that's where most smokers sit and chat to each other, best place to gather in my opinion.

Starboard deck 7 rear, come out of club Fusion and take the first door to the right, not huge and the signs are a but weathered but the ash bins are there.

Also deck 16 rear of Sabatinis outside one floor up from the aft pool

I have a very sensitive "gag" response. I just see "smoke" and can not help coughing. My body says - beware - close down - stop breathing. Just cant help it. Even if it is in a BBQ smoke in a restaurant, or if it is under a waterfall with vapour/ mist. If it looks like "smoke" - I start to choke. Thanks for your comments.... I will look out for the e cigs - I think they are a novel solution for you guys. sincerely,

Would anyone like to give me an update on exactly where the inside and outside smoking areas are on the Royal. I'm going on the Feb 9th cruise to the Caribbean. I know no smoking inside the cabins or the balconies, but just want to make sure where to go. Thanks in advance for the info!
