Live from the Sapphire - March 24-31

Recommended Posts

Just boarded the Sapphire and the upgrades are fabulous! Since this is a California coastal cruise, I'll be able to post frequently and answer any questions that anyone has.

Princess started using a staggered embarkation with this cruise. We flew in this morning and arrived at the port around 12:40 (our scheduled time to embark was 1:30). Being platinum, we weren't sure if we'd have to wait to get on the ship. Turns out, if you are platinum, elite, or a suite passenger, you get to bypass all waiting. All other passengers were waiting in the terminal for their alloted boarding time (not sure if they had boarding cards or what).

We have a balcony and still have the old, comfy furniture. The only difference that I see to the room is the new, big flat screen tv. The only unexpected thing about our room was that we walked into one king bed, rather than the 2 twins that we expected. Our room stewardess, Jocelyn, is very nice and said it will be fixed before bed.

We had lunch in the international cafe and it was great (chicken cashew salad and a tuna panini...chocolate peanut butter mousse for dessert). The buffet was a cattle call, as usual. I didn't see a special at the grill like I had read about on here earlier.

Like I said earlier, if you have any questions, ask (I can post pics too)! I have internet on my phone in all the ports and we have the platinum internet package on the ship, so I should be able to post frequently.

This was in our room upon arrival (sorry it's sideways...my phone won't let me edit the photos).

Here was our dessert from the international cafe (chocolate peanut butter mousse in the mug, tiramisu in the glass).

We will be on the same cruise in a few weeks. When you say Platinum can board early, do you mean any time, or just early during their allotted boarding time. Thanks and enjoy your cruise!

They started replacing the TVs in January 2011. As I was disembarking, the flash screens were embarking. I think it took a few months to get this done.

Can you find out when the current Captain is leaving the ship and when Captain Nick Carlton is getting onboard? I think it will probably be in May sometime. Trying to figure out who my Captain will be in May.

If you have a chance - can you stop into my future cabin and cement the old furniture to the floor so that it can't be removed in the future???? :) I sure hope they are not planning on replacing the furniture on this ship by this summer. If you run into anyone in the know - if you can find out about that that would be great :).

Have a great cruise!

Will you please tell me if all of Skywalkers is reserved during the hours of 5 to 7pm for the Elite/Platinum lounge, so that no other passengers are allowed in that area? Just curious.

Also, does your cabin seem to have a newer pillow-top mattress as has been mentioned.

Thanks and have a wonderful cruise.

We're leaving next Saturday (31st), and I am curious what the rotation will be for the dinner menus. Specifically, we are not real big fans of the Caribbean Night menu, and am curious if it is on your cruise and what night - for us, a good night to book a specialty restaurant.

Also, we're Platinum, so it sounds like boarding is pretty much when we get there.

Have fun - this is usually our Mexican cruise, so it will be interesting to see how the different weather and ports will affect our week.

Our Princess transfer got us to the pier about 45 mind before our time. Well, we flew right ahead of everyone that was not platinum or elite. There were several hundred people waiting in the terminal when we went by, who came too early. I'm assuming we would have been let on if we had arrived earlier, but I can't be sure.

The caption of our cruise is Ivan Jerman. I'm not sure how to find out when they will be switching...

Oh, btw, I noticed while hanging over my balcony last night that the Dolphin deck has the new furniture (2 reclining chairs, 2 foot stools, and one large round table). Caribe deck has 2 new reclining chairs and a tiny table (no foot stools). Baja deck (where I am) has the old chairs and table (larger than Caribe, but smaller than Dolphin). I'm not sure about Aloha since it is above me.

We went to the platinum elite lounge and had to show our cards at the top of the escalator when we went in. He pointed us to the right, where the appetizers were, so I assume that it was all reserved, but I'm not positive. I'll try to find out tonight.

No pillowtop mattress...regular mattress with a foam topper, then an egg crate on top of that (that we requested).

We are sailing April 28 and can't wait to see the new Sapphire. We loved your weekly menu for the special drinks at Skywalker's. Of course we want you to enjoy your cruise, but is there anyway you can post the daily dinner menus? Planning to make a couple of specialty dinner reservations and don't want to miss something we might like in the dining room. Are the formal nights the 2nd and next to the last nights or the two days at sea? Sorry you have rain, but it sounds like it won't spoil your trip. Stay safe and enjoy!!!!!

When you say a 'big' flatscreen.... What size is it?

Have fun on your cruise.

It's larger than any tv I've seen on a ship. It's a Viewsonic monitor and I would guess a 19-21".

Sure, I'll hold onto them.

The MUTS are The Adventures of TinTin, I don't how she does it, and The Artist for today.

Formal nights are Monday and Wednesday (before and after San Francisco). I'll start taking pics of the menus today (yesterday was the typical sail away with prime rib, Hawaiian pork, vegetable ragout, barramundi, and crayfish). The special in the Pacific Moon was the stirfry noodles with scallops and shrimp (oversalted IMHO). I've had it in the past and loved it and couldn't take more than a bite (and I'm an eater). :-P

We are on this cruise too

Ship is lovely and Horizon Court is sparkling!

Like the separation of the desserts from main food for lunch and in my walk through at breakfast the breads and sweet rolls were out of the main food area

We had lunch at International Cafe when we boarded and even though we had a 2:30 boarding time we boarded at 1. We are elite and rally did not see there being a problem with boarding with the staggered times

Had dinner in Sterlings last night. Do not like all the confusion in the dining rooms on first night so this has become our ritual plus it was Saturday night!

I am posting from my iPhone no problems but using the iPad for Internet needed to go to settings to reconfigure to ships Internet

Last night we went to the platinum/elite snacks in Skywalkers. It was much better than we anticipated. This being our first cruise as platinum, we have been very impressed with the perks so far.

After visiting Skywalkers, we went to dinner in the Pacific Moon. I had the spring rolls, mushroom soup, and the special for the restaurant: a seafood and noodle stirfry with shrimp, scallops, and veggies. The spring rolls were awesome, as usual, but the mushroom soup and special dish were oversalted, IMHO. The soup and special have always been my favorites, so I was sad that they were so salty this time. It was no problem though because the ice cream parlor is open until 10:00pm now.

After dinner, we went to the show in the theater. It was very good. It opened with a song by Rhianna, which was refreshing to hear something contemporary in a show. Dave Cole is CD and is doing a great job. Bex is deputy CD. Carlos Oscar is the comedian and is very good.

After the show, we went to Trivia. It looks like all the trivia will be in Club Fusion. We weren't winners, but it's still fun. The prizes are ridiculous, as usual. ;-)

It is pouring rain today in Santa Barbara and it seems like most people are staying on the ship. It is a tender into port and rough seas to get to the beach. We ate at the international cafe for breakfast (yogurt parfait and a egg, cheese, and canadian bacon muffin).

We also walked through the casino to find the "empty" area now filled with chairs and tables to give the smokers another place to go.

Here's a picture of it:

2012-03-25_10-08-36_960.jpg

I'll post a bar menu and then be off for now. Remember, if you have any questions, ask! I have been getting great cell reception from the ship (not roaming).

I don't know about that. There were two people being escorted ahead of the crowds by Princess staff, so I would assume it would be the same for you. Don't quote me on that though. :-)

Thank you so much for all the pictures and details! I am on the same itinerary on 4/28.

I do have one question for you for your San Francisco day regarding debarkation times. We are debating doing an independent wine country excursion that would require us to be off the ship around 8:15 or so. Can you let us know the earliest debarkation time for San Francisco when you hit that day in the itinerary?

Thanks so much, and hope the rain is gone now. It's heading for So Cal at this point, we're supposed to get it today. Enjoy the cruise! :)

Thanks for the information on boarding. When I called princess they said there was no special boarding. Do you mind explaining how it worked...where did you go when you arrived that they let you go ahead of people. Was it the usual place up the escalator to the checkin? How did they let you pass? What time did you get there & were there lines already? Anything else you can think of that may help...Thanks so much. You can also email the info to me as I am not sure I can find this again ihermdar1@yahoo.com...Thanks, Darlene
