Dawn Review 6/6-6/13

Recommended Posts

Well first I must say that everyones opinion is differnt and so just because I LOVED this ship doesnt mean everyone else will.

I was truly amazed first the min I steped foot on the ship. Going under the bridge was a beautfil experience. My hubby did the limbo..LOL

I booked a gty k and was given a 11th floor cabin which I believe is a ii catagory. So we were pleased about that. The room was an inside cabin. Yes its small but we were only in it for sleeping and dressing..

The food I thought was great. Every night was something new. And if you dont like the dish ask for something different. They have no problem getting you more food. We would share entress to taste them and if we like the desserts we would order 2..

The staff was very friendly and nice. Our waiter on sat brought me over a dish of apples and crackers cause the boat was hitting massive waves and I was feeling sick. He was so nice to me. The apples did wonders!!!

The entertainment was SUPER!! Paul and Mike mad the best team. Now being this is my first cruise I have nothing to compare them to but they were awesome. The worked so well together and made the cruise laugh and smile. (heard he might me going on a new ship in 05)

I dont want to drag this out so if anyone has any questions I will answer them if I can. I dont know anything about the kids programs cause I didnt bring mine but there were 460 kids on that ship and I swear you would have though there were 10. No screaming kid no misbehaved kid at all..

Here are just some silly things to remember.

There is only 1 outlet in the room. It was fine for us but if you need more bring a power strip.

Check the phone volume located on the bottom of the phone. Friends of ours missed the wake up call cause the volume was down low. Wake up calls are done in military time. We did one every morning and had no problems.

Blow dryers in each room. Not the most powerful but they are there. Laundry room on each floor has 2 irons with boards plus washer and dryers which are free you just buy the 1.00 suds.

When we got on the ship we made reservations for 6pm each night at the venetian. We did that so we would have a res each night and we could be by the window. But one day we ate at the italian res so we cancelled venetian just for that night. You must cancel before 5pm or you get charged.

Ok well ask away if you want.

Linda

I'm so glad you had a nice time! I do have a few questions for you, if you don't mind:

I thought the Venetian was one of the free restaurants.. I didn't think you could make reservations for that one? So, you just made a reservation that requested a table by the window? Also, you mentioned when you got on the ship you made these? So, they took your reservations for all 7 nights, not just 24 hours in advance like some here at the boards have experienced? Last, if Venetian is a free restaurant, how would they change you for a broken reservation after 5pm? Just curious, I would always try to notify them if we are changing plans.

Did you go on any excursions that you would recommend?

Thanks~~

DJ

Sounds like you had a great time. I can't wait for our cruise in September.

Questions:

1. Did you do any excursions? Which ones?

2. How was the situation on the private island. Keep hearing that it's small - what was your take on it?

3. Did you eat at any of the other restaurants or just the venetian and the italian restaurant??

4. Did you go to the spa? casino?

5. How as embarkment and debarkment??

Lot of questions, but ...

Thanks.

Glad to hear your first cruise was so good.

Some questions:

What time did you get on the ship? Were you there when they first started letting people in?

I know you mentioned a res for each night, but did you notice if there were waits?

What kind of music was there to dance to at night? We hate that crappy disco and new hip-hop stuff.

Thanks

Hi..

Ok yes as soon as we got on we went to the venetain and told them we wanted the same table by the window each night at 6 they said no problem. Yes it was free. I dont know why they would charge either but there was a sign there so we made sure.

We ate at cagneys 20.00 pp. I must say the filet migon (sp err) was out standing.

We did universal in port canavaral. It was kinda rushed. we didnt get the express pass. We waited about 1hr at shrek but heres a hint. if you dont mind not seating together go on the lines that say single riders. we saved 45 mins by doing that and we wind up seating in the same car.

The island was nice, But get on the first tender out so you can pick your seat and get umbrellas. If you have your own snorkle gear you only need to get a vest which is free. sign up on ship or off. The snorkle was amazing. We saw so many fishes and stingrays. Also I took a piece of bread from my hot dog roll and the fish came and ate it out of my hand. Yes I got scared and jumped out of the water and threw the rest of the roll in the water which causes a million fish to come over and my hubby grabed a piece and fed them. It was soooo cool. The island was crowded but the food line went very fast. The also have big round rafts you can rent. But we just snorkled.

Didnt go to the spa but the casino every night. We lost and won then my hubby hit it big the last night and we came home with more money then we took.

Embarkment went good. If you dont have a cabin assigment go to the info booth first to get it. Then its smooth sailing. Debarkment went very well. Its crazy trying to locate your luggage but have patience. But they do keep them with the colors not all mixed so its a bit easier.

Njski. we got to the pier at about 11:00 and were on the ship by like 12:00.

There were people waiting at venetian but more towards 7-7:30pm and on fri since it was lobster night. but each night when we got there there was never people waiting.

Differnt lounges had differnt music but we never heard any hip hop. In the free style daily you get each day will give you a list of the lounges and whats playing. There is a disco tec but we never went to it. Spinakers was the best lounge to relax in.

I had to laugh about the fish. They would probably startle me too. At least they didn't go hungry with you around. icon_smile.gif

I'm so excited about this cruise - I'm nearly bursting with excitement!!!!

Interesting about making reservations for the entire trip the first night. We'll have to remember that. Congrats to you and your hubby for bringing home more money than you left with - that's definitely A PLUS PLUS PLUS!!!! icon_smile.gif

Did you enjoy (or see) any of the shows???

Anything you can think of that is a MUST do or a MUST see??

Diva the shows were great.. I enjoyed them all. The comedy show with aflred and seymore was hysterical and the jungler comedian was also great. I think him name was tin foo. But spelt different. Bollywood I enjoyed my hubby didnt. Plus they had game shows you could sign up for..The spinaker lounge where they would have the game shows is right above the star dust theather so you can make both game show then take the elv down to make the main show. Most all the shows and games never lasted more than an hour. Oh and plan at least 1hr 45 mins for dinner. Thats why we did 6pm dinner each night.

Vespagirl. the best was lobster night. I had 4 tails. they were delicouse!!!

Tigerkiss - Just logged on and found your review. My hubby and I and 4 others are going together on the 10/3/04 NCL Dawn Cruise. I was glad to see there are blow dryers and irons for our use. If I can avoid packing those items, I can save room for other things. Glad you enjoyed your cruise. This will be our 9th--but I still get just as excited for the months leading up for each one as I did for our first in 1993. This is our 1st time leaving NYC.

Sorry we missed meeting each other on the ship. I know with the updates on the message boards our roll call got messed up.

I posted on 6/4 just before leaving for New York. Dawn and her husband, Janice and her husband, Karen and Dean her companion meet with me on the first day at the Spinaker lounge. We had drinks the next night and Karen and Dean went to dinner with my daughters and I on Wednesday night.

My daughters got sick on Saturday with those big waves. I didn't get sick but I had a hard time walking on the last day. The floor and ground kept coming up to meet me.

Glad your husband did so well in the casino. I won $200 on the Krack-its and $600 on the last Bingo session.

We have a great time. Even better than last year.

I am going to California and I will right a review next week when I return.

Glad you enjoyed your first cruise.

Linda,

it sounds like you had a great time! i am going on the dawn next month and cannot wait icon_smile.gif this is my 4th cruise, but my first w/my toddler! so it will be a new experience for me. in the documents it says that you can embark at 1pm, but i see that you were able to get on earlier and i have also seen other people say that too. so is it safe to assume if we got there by like 12 we could start the process? is it overwhelming w/all of the different restaurants? i have never done freestyle cruising, i am wondering if i should make reservations in advance or if i should just figure it out as i go. plus i am going w/my family ..10 adults and 1 child.

thanks,

Hi..I didnt see people wearing shorts but they were laxed..we saw people in baseball caps the whole time they ate..you can wear short in any dining room up untill 5pm. so if you want to eat at the aqua for lunch you can wear what ever.

As long as disembarktion goes ok then you shouldnt have any problems getting on early.

Being you are going with a large party i would make a res for the whole week like we did then cancel by 5pm if you want to try something different that day.

I really liked the idea of freestyle cause I am not the dress me up kinda person. Dont get me wrong I dont mind doing it one or two nights but not every night. I liked the fact the I could wear my capris with a nice shirt and sandles. And my hubby wore slacks and polos each night execpt captins night he wore his suit. And trust me I couldnt have worn my capris and been fine..LOL

It wasnt overwhelming for us because we would always get together in the morn to make sure we were eating at venetian and if not we figured out where..so it worke out.

Do you remember if there was a Captains Cocktail reception?

Which night?

On other cruise ships it is usually the evening of the 2nd night...

Thanks!

does anyone remember dj bruce in the spinnaker lounge? I hope he is there wen i go back this summer. i thought he was really good at keeping people dancing. and playing requests. I have been to many places with a dj, and when requesting a song, i hear a lot of "sure eI'll play it" and they never do. Once again, dj bruce played my requests and I am grateful. anyone else have any contact with him/ what did you think of his performance?

Regarding shorts. We were on the ship a couple of weeks ago. They turned away a gentleman who had on shorts. They seated his wife. He went back to his room and changed.

Thanks Mark, I didn't even have anything to drink that must be the problem. I look at the board so quick trying not to miss anything and I don't always look at the date posted.
