Conquest ~ Tell me something (Good or Bad)

Conquest ~ Tell me something about this ship ... be it Good or Bad!

We are cruising in August to the Caribbean (doesn't really matter if it's the Western or Caribbean....just being on a ship) There is 3 of us .... all veteran cruisers. Myself 50+, son and his buddy both are 20. Our first choice was the Liberty with all the 2.0 changes...but after pricing everything out we can now cruise on the Conquest and save $1,000.00. We will be booking an aft balcony.

What I'm looking for is some of the pro's and con's about the Conquest ..... the "must do's" and "stay away from." Any information will help. Thanks in advance......

Sur Mer is missed by many. Its up those little steps in the BACK part of the back area of the buffet (the front buffet area above it is the steak pay restaurant). The sign is tiny to Sur Mer. Especially if the buffet is crowded, its a good place to go.

Cant say its my favorite ship, after being on it when Ike wiped out Galveston and my car, and the staff handled it so poorly.

Ive done it now 5 times .. and have two more booked ??!!! .. because it was a deal and I can drive.

The downside for some is this ship has no adult area if you like that. (like Glory for instance has, the next Conquest class ship built).

I like Mongolian BBQ for lunch but it closes at about 2:30 pm (later on port day some times), but I have missed it a couple of times, like I was in the casino doing the slot pull tournament or whatever. Its only open for lunch. Usually they only have shrimp as one of the meat choices the first day you board from what I have seen.

As far as I know this is one of the few ships that has draft beer in the sports bar offered if you are a beer drinker.

We were on the Conquest Apr 15 - 22. We really liked the ship overall, the colors and design were not the in your face as some other Carnival ships. We found the ship to be very clean and in good condition. We had an aft warp balcony, and enjoyed it. The MDR service was great and the food was very good. Best food was in the Stakehouse. Never found the Lido deck crowed, but all the pool chairs were filled early each day. We had a big balcony so that did not matter. The Casino slots are very tight, usually I win a little but this week just fed the machines. We are booked on the Conquest again next year after it goes to dry dock.

Counting the days :D:D:D

The bad: we had to get off

I know the ship is getting the 2.0 upgrades but do you know if she is getting a serenity area? I am cruising in Feb and hoping for that upgrade during dry dock.

We've sailed the Conquest 3 times, and loved her.

I agree with the poster that mentioned Sur Mer. Even if you don't eat the fish-n-chips, it's a great, quiet place to escape crowds for your meals. Also the best place to play cards or board games.

The staff has been very attentive every time on this ship, but that has been my experience on every cruise.

When is the drydock scheduled?

Will they remove the Sur Mer and replace it with the Italian themed restaurant?

And lastly but slightly off topic, am I right in the floor plans of the Magic that Sur Mer has been replaced on the Magic and there is no longer the seafood place?

Thanks in advance.

Where did you get this information from?? As I have not seen it elsewhere. Do you have a link to this info?

I do have the 2.0 link and a serenity area is NOT mentioned.

It is true that Dream class never had Sur Mer and no plans to add it. Its usually so empty, maybe they decided it was not popular enough.

Magic also has the burrito bar and it has Tandori, Indian food, a much larger pizza place and other new items. Carnival cant have every single venue on every single ship.

Stupid question .... what type of food is served in the Sur Mer and is it only open for lunch? Cant say its my favorite ship, after being on it when Ike wiped out Galveston and my car, and the staff handled it so poorly.

Thanks for the heads up on the lack of "Adults" only area....We were really looking forward to that. Even though the guys are only 20 we were hoping no one would really check. Being that there are only 3 port days we were looking forward to chill'in and soaking up the sun

How was the slot tournament

As far as I know this is one of the few ships that has draft beer in the sports bar offered if you are a beer drinker.

Cool ... we are not big drinkers (thank goodness) but it's always great to have an ice cold draft beer on a hot sea day

When is the drydock scheduled? The last couple of weeks in October I think. I'm booked for the 8th time 9/30 and I think she has one more sailing before dry dock

Will they remove the Sur Mer and replace it with the Italian themed restaurant? No, they will keep Sur Mer, the Cocina del Capitano is not a 2.0 upgrage.

And lastly but slightly off topic, am I right in the floor plans of the Magic that Sur Mer has been replaced on the Magic and there is no longer the seafood place? On the Magic the Italian specialty restaurant is in the same general vicinity, but it's more like the Pasta place on the Dream rather than the open area of Sur Mer.

Thanks in advance.

The Conquest is a great ship and my favorite class of ship, however now that I've sailed on the Magic, I'm quickly changing my mind.

I almost won the slot tournament last time, ahead until last few seconds. I could taste the win by then. Came in 2nd.

2nd time in the finals .. the first time I had the highest qualifying score and got a nice hat and the black tee shirt.

The last time I got a cheap white tee shirt only for coming in 2nd. Liked the black ones a whole lot better and they were better quality.

Sur Mer is only open for lunch and its fish and chips, but it had watermelon squares with seared tuna that I like a lot. Some kind of fish stew, think it has coconut in it, which Im allergic to, so never tried it. Deep fried oysters, were so so at best. They could improve it so they cook the fish better imo. I love fish and chips, just not their fish and chips.. but its very quiet up there to avoid a mob in the buffet and has lots of extra seating.

Any good hotel recommendations?

If I'm going on the cheap I stay at the Howard Johnson's right off the highway on Harborside drive. About 2 miles from the pier. It's cheap, clean, decent breakfast and they have free cruise parking.

Other times we stay over where most of the hotels are on Seawall. It's on the gulf side of the island. I've stayed at the Quality Inn, the Hilton, Casa del Mar and the Inn at Waterpark. They also all have free cruise parking and some have a shuttle to and from the pier.

A cab to the pier for 2 people is around $20 and takes less than 10 minutes.

I assume since its a conquest thread (love Magic a LOT, agree completely), they were asking about hotels in NOLA.

I start with cruise123.com and see what they list for cruisespecials. Lately Holiday Inn Superdome seems to have gone up, though they do offer a cruise package that is good.

I just did Voyger very last minute (booked only 5 1/2 days before the cruise) and did quality inn westbank for $129, 8 days of parking, shuttle to and from the port, and easy to get to the hotel. full breakfast and free internet included.

For this Nov, Im debating between Marriott, Convention Center location, right near the port so I can walk, for $159 with a $10 starbucks card, or Quality Inn for $129 again.

Hotels seem to have gone up in NOLA if you ask me. Had been getting Holiday Inn for $99 before this time.

Are you planning on parking at the port? I found that there is a holiday inn and a quality in both have free parking, welcome beverages, breakfast and a shuttle to and from the port all for around what it cost just to park at the port.

How was the quality inn? Is it safe to leave my car there during the cruise? How was the room?

I can't decide between that one and the holiday inn. Both offer about the same package but one is about 50 dollars less.

see above .. just posted above you (maybe we were posting at the same time). I just did the cruise special for quality inn westbank. the quality inn in new Orleans told me just 2 weeks ago they no longer offers a cruise package.

I would never park at the port.. thats why I do a cruise package that includes parking. It would have been $108 to park at the port.

I did the april 7 to 14th, voyager OTS and did quality inn and called the quality inn in new orleans among others .. and the best deal was the one shown thru stay123.com .. the one in westbank, though stay123 is sneaky and does not say its not in the city. I would book it direct though and not thru stay123 as they have a big deposit and a penalty to cancel usually.

The service was very new orleans, and friendly. The huge platter of bacon was perfectly cooked, with scrambled eggs and grits and fruit and sausage gravy and bisquits (no waffles like chains do these days). But they are not the one in new orleans, they are in westbank.

the shuttle driver was friendly and asked me to put a review up for their hotel on trip advisor and I will, but I did jewel and just got home monday from jewel. did 3 cruises in 3 weeks so just catching up.

I had trouble getting online and the front desk changed my room which is more than the 3 star hyatt place in tampa did when I had live bugs. The service was good.

Its rather black in that area, which might bother some. Its right on the access road when you get off the mississippi bridge. Lots of fast food to get something to eat for dinner.

some would say holiday Inn superdome is iffy too for neighborhood with that almost vacant block next to it.

I wish I could do 3 cruises In 3 weeks!! I still have over 300 days for mine :) Thank you for the info. Very helpful! I don't think the holiday inn I seen online was in Nola either tho. It said something about being 8 miles away. I think I'm gonna stick with the quality inn. I did enjoy the one that I stayed at in Galvaston.

We sailed the Conquest twice and the Liberty once. Sur Mer is a favorite for us- especially the first day as very few people are aware of it. It is so much qieter and fresher than the Lido lunch that is served at Embarkation

The draft beer served at the sports bar was a bit cheaper as well

My main complaint about this class of ship is that the floor plan is chopped up and makes it very confusing. I elieve only two or three decks cut through the ship. The atrium and dining rooms cut off the walkways. Also the walkways around the shopping area are tiny. At night it gets a little uncomfortable

But any cruise is a fun cruise so enjoy!

About #3- This is the one ship I've seen the staff actually enforce the "no kids" rule on any ship. (Haven't sailed any ship with Serenity, though). So yes, it's almost like Serenity. Kids can be in the area, but not in the pool or hottub, so most don't hang out there.

No we are flying in from New Mexico .... don't know yet if it will be 1 or 2 days before we sail. I do know that it will be 1 day after the ship returns.

Our price range is between $100.00 and $150.00 .... the important thing is "clean"

You are right, we were in 7440 and the layout of the cabin will only support 2 guest. No room for a 3rd bed. For two it had lots of room. The bed was at an angle. Some of the other aft wraps may be different, don't know...We did have a couple of item fall on our balcony from the top deck.... cup, and cig. butts. There is a overhange which runs the length of the aft part of the balcony it sicks away form the ship 2 or 3 ft. Plenty of sun/shade and no smoke. When we were underway the side part of the balcony was windy, but not the aft. We sat outside on all the Sea Days never had a problem.

I did walk off debark, and I called them.. twice as it wasnt clear which door to wait for them, I forgot (they did tell us when he dropped us off and the desk didnt seem to know).

Someone else called them.

Another large family of 5 or 6 walked up just as the bus pulled up.. so we had a full shuttle bus going back to the hotel with two large families plus me.

Its a nice sized bus and the driver extra nice and friendly.

But yes... we had to call them and wait maybe 20 minutes.. the hotel is not far away.

PS after the shuttle my car windows were fogged up so I also had to take time to wipe them off with napkins from the breakfast buffet and had some purple stuff on my bumper to clean off before I could start home. Got a cup of coffee, but I guess nothing to stop you from eating the free breakfast when you get back to the hotel if you wanted to.
