Triumph Tips Over?

Recommended Posts

Our daughter just got off Carnival Triumph in Miami this morning and she reports that last Sunday during a "fun day at sea" a gust of wind tipped the ship over sideways about 45-degrees. She was in her cabin when it happened and things went flying. Up on deck many pool chairs went over the rail into the Gulf; pool water emptied and flooded the buffet and went into many of the elevator shafts. There is some damage to the ship. The captain steered out of the squalls into better weather. She is not aware of any injuries.

Anyone out there with more information? Unlike the incident to Norwegian Dawn a couple weeks ago, this one did not make the press.

Thats very odd, here is a post from someone that wrote a thread from the ship on Tuesday May 3 and didnt mention anything about a "gust of wind"

On this thread from Sunday May 1st she did mention that sailaway was late.

I find this very hard to believe and hope it didn't actually happen. Had it been severe enough to knock deck chairs over the railing then surely people would have went over board as well. That would have been horrific.

Yes, 45-degrees must be an exaggeration as people would have fallen in and that did NOT happen. But she says it listed significantly and things went flying. It happened in the late afternoon and she says the cruise director reported it was a 90-knot gust. They announced that everyone in their cabins should stay in their cabins. The aft elevators were closed for awhile due to water in the shafts, as was the buffet until they got it cleaned up. The rest of the week went fine and everything operated normally.

I did a quick keyword search on Yahoo and through 5 pages saw no news story about such an incident. The media seems to love stories about problems on cruise ships so you'd think it would have appeared. I'm certainly not doubting anyone's word, just surprised this is the first anyone has mentioned it.

It is definitely an incident that would be reported somewhere, they sure jump over lesser things than this!!! If deck chairs were going over board, I'd say it was a very significant event... Hopefully those that were on the ship will come on and tell us what happened.

Anybody want to start a pool on how many poster will: blame Carnival or the Captain or the CD and demand their money back?

I'll bet those were a few tense moments though.

OT, I see they are doing a remake of the Posiden Adventure.

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All should be off now,, 1:35pm , so something should be comming about it tonight in the news??? Wonder how the ship is????

Can't Blame the Captain, this is the things people need to understand about Cruising!!! Your going against Nature (Mother Nature)!!! She is hard to predict and un-tameable!!!!!! Sunday would be Open Ocean and alot can happen out there! She (Triumph) did not pull in for any repairs so I assume the ship is fine and so are the passengers!!!:)

It highly impossible for a gust of wind to move a ship of this size on its side even at 45 degrees, The only way this could happen if the Helms Person swung that helm hard left in order to veer away from something infront. The ships captain should of sound some type of warning alarm first and also directed all passengers to hold on.

If something like that had happened we would all know about it by now. There would be 5 or 6 threads about it.:) :)

LOL, try 50 or 60!!! :p

I am sure the ship listed, the weather can get rough... but I would be interesting in hearing how others describe this... When I read the title "Triumph Tips Over", and then read what happened, I'd say that is quite different, LOL... I find it hard to believe that deck chairs went overboard, as mentioned, people would have gone overboard as well... the railing is rather high, wouldn't the ship nearly need to lay on its side for this to happen? And if so, I cannot imagine the water it would take on... I will say that having read similar posts and similar things happening on the ship, the stories onboard seem to take on a life of it's own, so if your daughter was in her cabin, she may have been victim to some passengers that like to exaggerate things like this. I am just glad everything is okay!!!

Well that's why I started this thread....to get some input from anyone on board. I have retracted the 45-degrees because there is no way that could have happened. And you're right; stories take on a life of their own. She did not witness the deck chairs going. But the aft elevators and buffet being closed down for awhile due to pool water flooding did come from her mouth.

Where are our witnesses?

I'm sure once they get back home and settled in we will hear from them... I'd imagine we'll hear something in the next day or so...

To y'all naysayers....

Although I believe a 45 degree angle is a bit extreme, this TILT happened to me on the Jubilee while we were crossing the Pacific.

It was early morning, 6 ish, and we were in our cabin. Wife was in bed under window and I was in bed against the wall. Well, you know you get used to that back and forth motion, more so in the middle of the ocean. So, here we are rockin, and rollin, and rollin, and rollin, wife starts shouting OH MY GOD! Her bed starts coming away from the wall, anything on tables and loose started heading toward the door, and I'm thinking POSEIDON ADVENTURE, now that to get out my cabin i will have to go DOWN though my door.

Several seconds of course seemed like 4 years of high school, but finally the ship starts coming back. And it was sudden and dramatic. We got dressed and ran up top. The pools had emptied, the gift shops and dinnerware, what was out, was trashed. People were coming out of their cocoons, and the whole event was the talk of the ship. We heard everything from "the captain turned sharp to avoid a whale" (like I would think he would risk 2000 peoples lives for a whale), to tidal wave.

He made a quick joke of it that night at the captains talk, but we never did find out what exactly happened. And it never hit the papers.

And to think, not once did I hear the word SUE!

Like I said, I am sure it happened... I just don't see how the chairs were tossed overboard.... I know there have been several instances of this happening, broken glass and water everywhere, but I have never heard of deck chairs going overboard... not that it didn't happen, I would think though, that since we have had people post that were on this cruise, since the day this supposedly happened, that they might make SOME mention of it... so I guess time will tell as to how extreme this was... thankfully everyone was okay.

Have you seen people hit a cow on the road? car usually total, same with the ship hitting a whale... if not seriously dented, the Stablizer arms will be ripped away. Tons of money lost in Dry Dock and alot of unhappy CC passengers here lol.

Im' looking at a live pic of the Triumph right now on the webcam and I zoomed in and she looks pretty good...not sure what side i am looking at, starboard I think.

Hope everyone was okay.

Starboard is portside in Miami.

Can't wait to hear from the cruisers who just got off...I would expect that we will hear shortly

45 degrees is rather dramatic and probably close to the critical angle to capsize since these ships are so top-heavy. We were on the Zenith several years ago and the ship avoided a sailboat dead in the water without running lights on and it listed 20 degrees which was enough to have people roll out of bed and for the liquor in the bars to fall off the shelves. Rather pungent odor the next day.

About a year ago, I was on the Victory and the same thing happened. The Captain came on and said that everything was ok-not to worry. We stayed tilted for about 2 minutes. The crew said he turned too quickly based on the wind.
