candykwong Posted August 27, 2012 #2 Share Posted August 27, 2012 Does anyone know what time the Princess After Hours Visit to St. Mark's Basilica in Venice leaves and when it returns? Thanks for any info on the tour. According to Princess website, it show the tour start at 6:30pm till 9pm. appox 2.5 hrs. Tour Overview Departing from your ship, you'll board a water transport for a short, scenic ride on the broad Giudecca Canal to your destination for the evening - St. Mark's Square, or as it's known locally Piazza San Marco, and St. Mark's Basilica for your one hour tour. Crowded with visitors during the day, the Basilica becomes a silent temple of worship as evening falls when it's closed to the public. Your knowledgeable lecturer will guide you through the cathedral, sharing the history and significance of the church's many wonders. In 828, relics believed to be the body of St. Mark were stolen from Alexandria by two Venetian merchants and taken to Venice. The basilica was then built to house the relics. A breath-taking landmark, this famous ancient basilica is unlike any other. A testament to Byzantium's influence on Venice, it's adorned with golden facade mosaics, marble and bronze statues, and five domes reminiscent of St. Sophia in Istanbul. You'll have an inside-view of the splendor that reflects not only Christian devotion, but also the impact of the wealth and success of this great city. Notice the marble floors and walls that blend in exquisite, carpet-like patterns and the gilded mosaic murals that adorn the walls, contributing to the church's nickname as Chiesa d'Oro, or Church of Gold. After your intimate visit to this premiere landmark, you'll return to the water launch landing to return to your ship. Of course, you're also free to stay in town to enjoy more of this enchanting city, returning to your ship on your own.
kent05 Posted August 27, 2012 #3 Share Posted August 27, 2012 We are booked to tour the Basilica after hours. Does anyone know if we can join the tour group at the Basilica rather than returning to the ship after a day of sightseeing. Is this common practice and would there be others doing the same?
