Adamstown - who's been there, what to do there

Recommended Posts

I've been there. What ship are you on? Landing at Pitcairn is very weather dependent - you can land using the islanders' own craft or if your ship is equipped with zodiacs (as ours was) you can use those. Heavy seas can prevent landings here. Fortunately our time on Pitcairn was sunny with gentle seas.

There is quite a steep walk up to the settlement. It's probably true there are no proper excursions as such because Pitcairn isn't that sort of place. There are several walking trails, some of them very steep and potentially hazardous, especially if it's rained. You can explore the ramshackle settlement, chat to the islanders (though some may choose to stay out of sight), buy souvenirs such as postage stamps, wood carvings, t-shirts, local honey etc. Buy postcards and see how long they take to reach home (ours took 3 months). There are no beaches, so forget swimming, though some people swim off the jetty and snorkel over what little remains of HMS Bounty.

I think it's important to read up on the extraordinary history of the island - Caroline Alexander's The Bounty is thorough, readable and still in print. Anyone who gets ashore here should feel very privileged indeed.

Most visitors to Pitcairn also visit Ducie Island - incredible birds, brilliant snorkelling in surprisingly chilly water - and Henderson Island, a World Heritage Site and full of birdlife.

The Pitcairn Islands are a British Overseas Territory, administered from New Zealand.
