Esmerelda Posted June 12, 2005 #54 Share Posted June 12, 2005 On all 3 of my past sailings. I have booked ALL of my excursions on my own...at home...online. I have saved not only money..but time and hassles just as the OP described. Of course if its weather related..that cannot be helped. I recommend booking all yourself. We have had zero problems and been to and done some terrific things on our own. Esmerelda

voyagerfl Posted June 17, 2005 #62 Share Posted June 17, 2005 I am almost afraid to post here again because I am not sure what all of you will say to me. I feel like I've come off as such a nasty person. Believe me, I'm not. I wrote that post early this morning right after I read the e-mail. I guess I should have thought about it before I posted because I probably would have responded in the same way most of you have. I think I was just more annoyed because we purposly booked our excursions months in advance to make sure we got what we wanted. And now I'll have to wait until we get on the ship to book another. Secondly...I would just like to say that if we were totally satisfied with Norwegian, we wouldn't be traveling on carnival. I am not bashing them. Actually, I didn't intend to. I was just annoyed. The other thing that I find sort of ironic is that I've posted questions in the past and have gotten few..if any responses. But the second I bash carnival...I have two pages worth of responses. lol...Kind of funny I think. So anyway....thank you all for making me fee horrible. :( I will go and enjoy my cruise. I am thoroughly looking foward to it...even if there's no Kon Tiki. ;) We do have some "Hard Heated Hanna's" here.......that's for sure. But relax....... There will be plenty of tours left........ I know how it feels to build up anticipation and then get disappointed. But believe me........the cruise is what you make it.:D
marktac Posted June 18, 2005 #63 Share Posted June 18, 2005 bsan, thanks for the support of my reply. wow, that sounds like a great time ==NOT  . thank god the stupid girl had you and another lady to help her out. that took a mature person to do that still had some caring and mature brains left in them. i say '' all of us carnival lovers need to ''keep'' standing together as much as possible here on the boards'' and help clean up the bad raps it gets from cruisers who give SNAP judgements and complaints about this wonderful cruise line. Now, THAT'S the Kon Tiki excursion I remember! Why anyone in their right mind would want to take that little trip down "mammary lane" is beyond me. If not going on that excursion will break her cruise, then she is in for a major bad time for the week. St. Thomas has beautiful beaches, great shopping and just a few miles away, St. John has Trunk Bay awaiting you. Why spend the day drinking, when you are in the midst of all that to experience?! That's my opinion. Mark T.
George8211 Posted June 18, 2005 #64 Share Posted June 18, 2005 The shore excursions have nothing to do with Carnival. Carnival offers the assistance of making reservations for you, but does not own or profit from these trips. You can feel free to set up any trip you want on your own. There is a lot of information on this forum of how to contact companies for your side trips. If you are going to a beach... you can take a cab. You don't have to sign up and go with the carnival group. If the people putting on the tour cancel... all carnival can do ... is inform you. I have had several trips canceled on my cruises. One day was very windy and all water activies where canceled at St. Johns. ... ie scuba, snorkeling, rafting, the beaches... the out fitters didn't want to take the liability from someone getting hurt. Of course... you could have still went out and do this stuff on your own.

wonderwoman451 Posted June 18, 2005 Author #66 Share Posted June 18, 2005 Hello everyone. I was quite surprised to see that this was a pretty active thread. After all, I've cruised and returned already. We did have a absolutly fantastic time and loved Carnival. As a matter of fact, we're already looking into our next cruise, which will be with Carnival sometime next year. For those that suggested I book the Kon Tiki directly through them: I e-mailed the company and didn't hear back from them until after I had already gotten home. Funny thing is this: in the e-mail they suggested a sail and snorkel to Buck Island. Not even knowing the two were related, that is the excursion we did. It was excellent. And thank you to all of you that knew I would come back with a great review :D
wingcorider Posted July 15, 2005 #67 Share Posted July 15, 2005 I cruised on Carnival's non-smoking cruise ship last year-It is the Carnival Paradise. But, don't get your hopes up, non-smokers; the Paradise has been moved to the west coast and is now a smoking ship as well. The reason given for the change in policy was that Carnival didn't make enough money in the casino. I loved it; I never had to wait on a table for blackjack or a video poker machine, but, evidently smoking and gambling go hand in hand. (I would have thought that drinking and gambling would have been enough to keep the casino going.) 100 days to go until I get to "sail away." And, boy, am I looking forward to it! George8211 Posted July 15, 2005 #69 Share Posted July 15, 2005 but, evidently smoking and gambling go hand in hand.... Of course they do... A smoker is willing to gamble on their health and life, will certainly not have a problem gambling for a few bucks. By smoking they are already burning their money... so why not just give some of it away. :D
Magic City Cruiser Posted July 15, 2005 #70 Share Posted July 15, 2005 Jill, gonna take a chance at setting myself up for some "critisism", I'll throw in my two cents worth! I know all the very good and valid reasons for booking excursions through Carnival and I can't argue with a single one. HOWEVER after extensively surfing the net for cruise reviews and experiences, I also searched for port excursions booked on my own. I found many excursions that I was interested in and I have booked a snorkel cruise for our visit in Cozumel that I am very excited about. I was able to find personal reviews of this company and tour and was satisfied that all was as it was advertised. I would suggest that you at least see what you can find on your own. Even if you wait until you are in port, there will be excursions you can book on your own through the vendors who are there when you get off board. You should be familiar with most from your online research. Unfortunately, things break, weather is bad, companies go out of business, people get sick....life isn't fair sometimes. But, most of the time, we get what we pay for and have looked forward to! I went on a "Familiarization Tour" to Oahu this spring. It was a planning trip prior to taking our HS band there next year. One of the events scheduled for us and our kids was a Party Boat kinda deal where they could swim and dance (just our group, no alcohol!). We were very dissappointed to arrive and find that this company had gone out of business! We ended up on a Catamaran Dinner Cruise that the kids are going to LOVE! Sometimes, when a door closes, a window opens! Keep thinking good thoughts....it's all good!:D
MGilly Posted July 15, 2005 #71 Share Posted July 15, 2005 On our last cruise (Royal Caribbean to Alaska), we found out when we got to our cabin that one of our excursions had been cancelled due to mechanical problems. It was the one excursion we were REALLY looking forward to. That port was fairly new, and the ship did not dock there - passengers were put on tenders to get to land. We decided not to even get off the ship, because it didn't look like there would be much to do. Instead, we stayed onboard and played shuffleboard, trivia games, etc. and had a great afternoon. When shipboard friends got back from their day in port, they talked about some things that we might have enjoyed trying, but we still had a wonderful day, and it was a great day and a happy memory. Really, if you let the little things bother you, you'll never enjoy your cruise! Follow the advise everyone here is giving you about booking another excursion once you get onboard or finding an excursion when you get to your port of call. Sometimes doing too much planning takes the enjoyment out of things. Our best cruise moments never happened on a planned excursion. They all happened as a result of a decision made on the spur of the moment.
Magic City Cruiser Posted July 15, 2005 #72 Share Posted July 15, 2005 MerrylG...if what you say is true, then I'm in BIG trouble!:D I think I have researched this dang cruise to the nth degree and I'm still surfin'! But, I agree with you, sometimes I wonder if all my research is going to take some of the excitement out of my experience! I cruised once before, about 12 years ago, before internet and I had 2 small kids. It was only a 3 night cruise so by the time I had just about figured out the cruise thing, it was time to go home! It's a little different this time. However, I think I do feel a little bit better about the ports of call as I know just where I want to go and don't have to spend time thinking or wandering around! The sooner I get where I'm going, the sooner I'll be sipping a fruity drink and soakin in some rays! Donna

I'll do a better job looking at the dates of posts and sailings though in the future! Does anyone know the result of Jill's trip? Inquiring minds want to know!
