onthehighseas606 Posted January 27, 2013 #1 Share Posted January 27, 2013 We just got off a b2b cruise on the Inspiration. If you plan on going on the Inspiration, do not book a cabin on the Upper deck (Deck 6) aft. The minute we stepped into our aft cabin, we smelled heavy cigarette smoke. We immediately complained about it to our cabin steward. He acknowledged that it was an ongoing problem. We then talked to the supervisor on that floor and she too acknowledged that it was a problem and that we should turn off the ceiling ventilation when we smell the smoke. Not only did cigarette smoke fill our room, but welding smoke that was coming from maintenance on the Serenity deck as well. Many others in cabins near us complained also and some were moved to a new cabin. We were not offered that option UNTIL 2 days into our second cruise. I now have a nasty upper respiratory infection because of the smoke. We were given onboard credits---that doesn't heal my lungs. :(
Tapi Posted January 27, 2013 #2 Share Posted January 27, 2013 I wouldn't say that this problem is ship specific. I believe it depends on who is smoking near you on your specific sailing. For example, we've done the Fascination a few times, and only once did we have smoke smell issues ( and it was horrendous). I know some will disagree with me, but I'm very grateful that we are moving towards more stringent smoke rules. OP: check out other cruise lines. Some have much more strict smoking rules than Carnival that may be more to your liking.

ccruisequeen Posted January 27, 2013 #4 Share Posted January 27, 2013 We always try for a midship inside cabin on the Empress deck.

CWcruisers Posted January 27, 2013 #7 Share Posted January 27, 2013 What do you think was the source of the ciggy butt smell? Could you figure out where it was coming from?
Cushing985 Posted January 27, 2013 #8 Share Posted January 27, 2013 Those old beat up ships, try something newer. Agreed! I really wish people would stop booking on those ships and then Carnival might get the hint and sell them off and build some more new ships. SadieN Posted January 27, 2013 #9 Share Posted January 27, 2013 Another area- We did notice that the smoke from the Casino loiters on the at the mid-ship Elevator lobby on the Riviera deck. It smells for about three cabins in either direction. The Smoking area of the casino bar is right next to the elevators. Never encountered that problem on the Elation or Paradise. Last cruise on the Elation we had an aft facing cabin on Main. No problem with smoke at all. Hope you get better soon.
Fla Mike Posted January 27, 2013 #10 Share Posted January 27, 2013 Our last Carnival cruise in October, we were on Empress, E60, never noticed a problem. Now, TV noise from the cabin next door. I don't think they ever turned it off.
FlaGrl4Evr Posted January 27, 2013 #11 Share Posted January 27, 2013 We sailed the Inspiration last year and were in OV U168, which is just aft of the back elevators, port side. We did not notice any smoking smell at all. .
onthehighseas606 Posted January 28, 2013 Author #12 Share Posted January 28, 2013 OP - What cabin were you in? Last cabin aft on Upper deck. Tapi, this is the first cruise we have ever been on where we experienced smoke (both cigarette and welding) in our cabin. This was totally unexpected for us. Two ladies stopped by the cabin after noticing our door was open. They asked DH if he smelled smoke and they were quite concerned. They too had an aft cabin. I walked forward to the front of the ship and could still smell cigarette smoke. I am a non smoker - I don't care if people smoke in the designated areas, the Serenity deck is not one of them but we saw people smoking down there. We also saw crew members down there selling drinks but said nothing to the smokers. We think that's where the smoke was going into the ventilation system. For those cruising on the Inspiration, just beware.

I really wish people would stop booking on those ships and then Carnival might get the hint and sell them off and build some more new ships. Live and learn. We're on the Miracle in August - is that ship okay? BTW, we'll never cruise on the Inspiration again. Even the people with the balconies were not happy with their cabins - lack of privacy. Most of the people on board were young (under 30) and were more concerned about partying than anything. Our experience will not prevent us from cruising on Carnival again.
