Beaches: Clothing Optional?

From what I have always read/observed, it is illegal and can be ticketed. (Here's one source) Also, from learning about the local culture, the USVI are more on the conservative side (no swimsuits in town/businesses - use a coverup, thongs are not common, etc).

A good rule of thumb... When traveling from island to island (or any area/country for that matter), I try to research local customs first and follow what's proper there since I'm a guest (just as you are doing now).

However... this same question came up just the other day on cruisemates.com and various posters have reported topless on a beach (Marriott hotel) near the cruiseships as well as bottomless on Trunk Bay. Both of those really surprised me! We are returning for another land vacation to St John this summer, and Trunk Bay is definitely a stop we make.

Islander... can you share some insight? icon_smile.gif

Otherwise, try Orient Beach on St Martin (on the French side of the island). Definitely clothing optional for all shapes and sizes.

Its illegal here in the VI. I have never seen any topless at Morningstar (which is Mariott's beach) and certainly never seen anyone bottomless at Trunkbay (a National Park beach, Park Rangers give tickets to offenders). There are a few little beaches, off the beaten path like Salomon on St. John where folks would go nude but its a National Park Beach and again Rangers keep an eye out. Also seen a few topless at Honeymoon on Water Island, but other then that its keep your swimwear On.

  • 3 years later...

I was told by a lifeguard at Megans Bay Beach that there is a small beach you can walk to along the shoreline from Megans that is topless. As you look out towards the Atlantic from megans, it is around to the right. If you try it out, please be sure to post pictures!

Over and out from paradise, Marc
