Buckingham Palace Tour or on our own

Recommended Posts

Do we need to book a tour of Buckingham Palace or can we do it when we get there? I understand that during August we will be able to watch the changing of the guard, any info on that.
Thanks for any input,
Becky

HERE is all the info on "Buck House".

Changing of the guard I think will happen every day in August. My tip is to get there a little bit earlier and go up to Wellington Barracks, which is a short walk up the road on your left as you face the palace, and watch the pre-parade inspection and ceremony. You will be quite close to the action and can get some good photographs through the fence. HERE is all you need to know regarding times etc.

In August, you'll actually be able to tour INSIDE Buckingham Palace and it's incredible!!! I can't remember if we purchased our tickets ahead of time....hmmmmm. You might post that Q on other travel boards, like aol or yahoo. I believe we just got in line and it was first come, first served. As for the changing of the guard, IMHO it's highly over-rated. Most people feel that on their first time to London they HAVE to see this, but most people I know agree that it's one of the most lack-luster things to do in London. Plus, you can see the changing of the guard at other locations, such as Windsor Castle, should you go there, The Tower of London or the Horse Guards.

I have my tickets for both the Palace L12.95/pp and the Royal Mews L4.50; took about 2 weeks to arrive. I understand there will be a special exhibit this summer - a musical accompaniment, from command performances to costume ballsk, musical entertainment at the Palace will be the focus of a special display. Queen Victoria's spectacular ball dresses, and hear the sounds of the original instuments and music specially composed for the royal family on your audio tour. all part of the visit to the magificent State Rooms 31 July -26 september 2004, Tickets 0207 7766 7315 or www.royal.gov.uk.
I have my tickets for both the Palace L12.95/pp and the Royal Mews L4.50
I see you're using a US keyboard and don't have the "£" character available to indicate GBP. Somebody shared this tip with me a few years ago:

US keyboards don't have a "£" sign, so quoting GBP prices
isn't so easy. Tip: hold down the "Alt" key then type "156" on the
side keypad (but NOT the keys along the top of the keyboard) and release the Alt key. £!

I have read that it is advisable to purchase the "tour book" when you enter B'ham Palace. Otherwise as you pass through the rooms, you don't really realize what you are seeing as far as works of art, history of furniture, etc. Nothing is labeled in the rooms.
Also, if you are a AAA member, you get a discount in the gift shop.

Thanks for the tip, it works so much faster and easier than the way I have been doing it. I have a short cut to a chacter map, I have to select, then copy. This tip is so much faster. Now I'll go on the search for the numbers for the euro symbol. :D
