cardamon Posted April 17, 2013 #1 Share Posted April 17, 2013 The CDC has placed Labadee, Haiti, RC"s private beach, on their malaria alert list. I just returned from cruising was rejected from donating blood because of this alert. I donate regularly every 8 weeks. Now I have to wait for 1 year before I can donate again. It would have been good to know prior to cruising: I would probably have stayed on the ship. It is my fault, never thought to check the CDC list prior to cruising, but RC could alert passengers of this change. Please be aware this is not the choice of the donor center. This is a CDC regulation used by all donor sites.
cw2go Posted April 17, 2013 #2 Share Posted April 17, 2013 I am not positive of the details but have seen the info posted here on CC before. Patty
Rare MandyMooToo Posted April 17, 2013 #3 Share Posted April 17, 2013 I think is is true of Mexico ports also isn't it? I think I read that and I guess we really need to check on this for all the ports as my teenage son donates regularly since his blood type is one of the rarest (AB-). akcruz Posted April 17, 2013 #4 Share Posted April 17, 2013 Yes, this has been this way for a number of years. Many have posted that they were not able to donate blood for a year after visiting Labadee. Have heard of other ports having the same restrictions, but can't remember what they are right now. While it would nice for the cruise lines to let you know, I can see why they do not. It is really each and every travelers own responsibility to know what impacts each ports has to their individual needs. Just because it is a cruise doesn't mean it is just like staying at home. Wonder if this is universal. Sea Ya

highway6161 Posted October 14, 2013 #8 Share Posted October 14, 2013 Yep, just got a 'thanks but no thanks - see you next year' from New York Blood Center, because of a stop in Labadee this summer.
Susu1974 Posted November 14, 2013 #9 Share Posted November 14, 2013 Same thing for Canadians stopping in certain ports. My husband couldn't donate blood after a visit to Honduras.
Geema Posted November 14, 2013 #10 Share Posted November 14, 2013 My daughter in law tried to donate blood two weeks ago and they said no because of Labadee. They also mentioned Cozumel I think.
nseit1974 Posted November 14, 2013 #11 Share Posted November 14, 2013 I have to wait a year after being in Labadee. They said even if I didn't get off the ship. They a just being very careful. Toddcan Posted November 14, 2013 #13 Share Posted November 14, 2013 When I was in a missionary in Haiti from March 1983- Sept 1984, I was not able give blood for 3 years after my return.
Rare Lionesss Posted November 14, 2013 #14 Share Posted November 14, 2013 At this rate we will never be able to donate again, if we keep visiting Labadee on our cruises. :( Sea Ya
