Changed My Mind About Cruises- 6/12/05 Dawn Review

Recommended Posts

:) Hi All- First, thank you all for all of your wonderful advice and help with my questions I had prior to my trip on 6/12/05. This board really helped us get excited about going ...yet we were a little nervous and fearful we would be disappointed and hate cruising. You see, we went on a 3 day cruise out of Miami on Royal and hated it!!! We felt we were like cattle. We didn't have a balony...that could have been a big part.... But we tried to give cruising another shot... Thank goodness we did!

ThIS CRUISE WAS ONE OF THE BEST TIMES WE'VE HAD! We honestly can say there was really not one really negative thing to say about this trip.

We left Long Island (Suffolk County) at 12pm, arrived at the pier at 1:30pm. I loved being able to go out of NYC. How convenient!

We asked a NCL employee about Priority boarding and were immediately escorted to a window and was on the ship and in our room in 15 minutes! Wow, what a great start... we thought... if this continues, this is wonderful. Our room was sooo nice! I couldn't believe the space we had. It was like a nice size hotel room. The bathroom...a real size bathroom... a table...with nice goodies on it...(little fingerfood)... and A BALCONY...WITH TWO LOUNGE CHAIRS WITH CUSHIONS!

We met our room cleaning service team of Medel and Marisol.... they were a BIG part of making our trip wonderful. They were nice, pleasant people. We were always greeted by their smiling friendly faces. I looked forward to a suprise each night, towel animals... Each night a different one... How cute are they? You will be lucky and happy if you get Medel and Marisol .

Every single employee was PLEASANT! UNBELIEVEABLE...REALLY. We couldn't get over how every employee was nice . Whether it be just a smile, how was your day, are you having a good time, a good morning...etc. how could we not encounter someone with a bad attitude?... WE NEVER DID COME ACROSS ONE!...

The first restaurant we visited was Salsa, Salsa...we loved Jerome our waiter..."what a great start" we continued to say.... "If this continues.... "...and it did.. Each night we tried a different restaurant. We did do Salsa, Salsa a second time. Loved Impressions also. The waitresses and waiters at all the restaurants we visited...were again terriffic!

We saw the wonderful shows almost every night.. Edge, Bollywood...etc. Collin, how funny is he...he just made you happy hearing his voice on stage or in your room on your cabin TV... Now that is a special type of person...to make you happy just hearing his Scottish accent....Again, a big part to making the cruise wonderful. The casino, pool area, ice carving demo, chocolate buffet, towel folding demo etc. all fun.

We rented a car in Port Canaveral as well as Miami...(thanks to the board and all of your tips again). Thrifty in P/C and Enterprise in Miami. We did our own thing and went to the Space Center. Was a little disappointed because I thought we would see more up close things...but I guess I was expected to much that really was not allowed in this day and age. We then went to CocoBeach. Nice beach, pier.... nothing really to exciting...just a nice beach.

In Miami...we went to GATOR Park...I went on line to see what would be the best Airboat Ride...and found advice saying this was the place.. It was great! During the airboat ride didn't see may gators...one baby...but that was ok... the experience was ssssssssooooo much fun! Loved it.. Saw how beutiful the everglades are...behind the roads and civilization... After the ride we met Dave (I think) he gave us a hands on (literally) education on gators. What a great time and what a great, funny educator. We actually held a "certain class" alligator. As he told us gators are classified by size and how dangerous they can be. We ate lunch in an authentic Cubin restaurant on the way back.

Still, all is going well...could this be????? Yup!

Stirrup Cay- Was great! First tender off the ship. Enough chairs for everyone. If you like being with people, you could. If you didn't, you absolutely could find a quiet area. Snorkled, saw a few fish... nice water..great unobstruted picture taking of the Dawn. Did parasailing for the very first time!!! We had a great bunch of people of this parasailing adventure. Our group had some super nice people on it... we all had a great time... I was scared, but once up in the air...it is SO CALM... and peaceful. I hope the video we took for one of our fellow parasailers came out ok....

Nassau- Docked at around 8pm...went to the new section of Atlantis via cab.. $4 per person... IT IS HUGE.... HUGE I TELL YOU.... it must be wonderful to see in the daytime. We saw all the cool effects, fish etc in the "DIGS"... basically their acquairm. My husband won some money at Craps and I lost some money at the $1 slots... I didn't realize I was on a $1 slot until I saw how many credits came up... but continued playing....

Second day at Nassau- did the Swim with the Stingrays. We were unsure if we would be able to get this excursion because it was the night before that we decided to do it...But Ruth, our concierge came through...She was great! as well as Carlos was... you see we had Carlos from Sunday to Wednesday and Ruth from Thursday to Sunday... Carlos left the ship on Wednesday and Ruth took over... AGAIN...no complants and they were a big part of our great trip!

The swim with the stingrays was nice. Nice ride to the area on a small boat. I was only given two pieces of squid to feed the rays... I wish they gave more but it was ok. Loved to just watch them swim around and watch their behavior. We were late getting back to the Dawn...but they of couse waited for us... Sorry fellow guests ...it wasn't our fault... They do wait for you if it not your fault and you do go through a ship excursion. The Dawn left about 12:15 instead of the 12:00 time listed.

The day a see was kind of neat...We saw some storms in the distance...Lighting and thunder...really cool... to watch... We did have a little bit of rain the last day early in the A.M...but it cleared to a slight overcast day...But that was ok... still a nice day... We had beautiful weather each day.. The seas were calm as could be...We really were lucky! It was a fabulous bunch a days with the weather.

The people on board were also so very nice... really didn't encounter any negativity. Everyone was in good moods and friendly and kind to each other. Maybe the employees attitudes were rubbing off on us... tee hee..

Disembarkment, a breeze.. We did have the VIP tags. We arrived ahead of schedule ...8:30 am... and then 1 hour and 1/2 later we were able to leave...again a breeze... Our luggage was waiting in a organized section . Easy to find and then off we were.

We truly couldn't have asked for a better time. From the other guests on board, all of the NCL employees, the Dawn, entertainment and just having the choice to be around people or go and sit quietly on our own private balcony made for one great experience. The Dawn and NCL has changed our minds about cruising!!! Can't wait to go again...

As you all have helped us, feel free to ask us any questiions.

PS... Will post a bit of history photo from this trip as soon as I get down from come back to reality...stay tuned...

Crusingsquid,

Glad you had such a great time. Now THAT'S what cruising is all about:D .

This really does make such a difference, doesn't it!! I have found this to be the case (with the exception of 1 or 2 people) on all of my NCL cruises. The crews are so nice and friendly. It really makes a trip extra special.

The day that we had the big thunder storms in the distance, there was also a water spout the we were watching. I took ome pictures, i hope it comes out. The water spout looked like it was chasing the ship, and then it just dissipated.

Thanks for the review. Sounds like you had a great time. We're looking into the Dawn next summer. We'll probably take the train from Boston to NY. Or would you think driving would be easier?

Happy to hear your Dawn experience was as wonderful as ours have been. We share your affection for both Salsa and Impressions. We look forward to returning to Dawn and her new Western Caribbean itinerary in January.

Uh-Oh--

You've caught the cruising bug.

There is no cure for this disease. Book another cruise immediately to alleviate the symptoms. You will also need to spend every spare moment on these boards or you will start to worry about what you are missing.

Welcome to the Club:D

Sounds like you're addicted now. Research makes all the difference. Many say your first cruise is the best for me it was the first cruise after finding ccs.

Thanks for posting the review.

Hi crusingsquid!

Glad to hear you had a wonderful trip! I have a qustion I am just a little confused, the itinerary says that you are in GSC until 6pm and you say that you arrived in Nassau at 8pm so you can get off the ship and get a taxi to Atalntis? How do you go about doing that and getting one to take you back to the ship?

Also what can you do at Atalntis, I know about the aquarium and casino is that it?:D

Thanks!!!

Hi -

Kladam- didn't see that water spout! Wow, I wish I did..what side of the ship was it on?

Fam of 5- Don't know if taking a train from Boston would be? But I did read on this Board that the pier is very close from Penn Station.

Dolphins- Is the Dawn definitely doing the Western Carribbean? That is something to look forward to.

TrinaLC/Suesan Jean- We were in a Penthouse.

Lastingtouch- Carlos was going on vacation and then another ship (Bermuda) I believe.

Noanker1- Ok..you were at the Stingray encounter...one question...did you see the man that didn't have a swimsuit? and that he was in his undies?

Lau92080- We left their private Island at 4pm... they changed the departure time from 6pm to 4pm. We arrived in Nassau at 8pm. We got off the ship and there were plenty of cabbies waiting to take you to your destination. I heard some people went into town and ate dinner there. Besides the casino and looking at the fish etc., I believe NCL has an excursion for the next morning which gives a tour of Atlantis. It may be more indept than just what we saw. The place is unbelieveable. Before we left for the cruise, I called Atlantis and asked if we could use their beach and slides etc. They said only if we purchase a "day room" for (If I remember correctly) $200. Well, we did the stingray encounter instead. We just wanted to see the place and going that night for just a few hours was good enough.

We were in AB #11020 (Jade) back in April, we LOVED it!!! Was Lani your Butler?? She was very helpfull and efficient for us, she helped make our cruise EXTRA special!! My DH and I enjoyed the Breakfast deliveries, my DD LOVED having lunch and snacks brought to the cabin!!! We WERE spoiled!!!:D Can't wait till next February when we are back on the Dawn again, in the same cabin!!!

Liker 1- I do have the dailies, but not a scanner...sorry

Noanker1- :D Ha, ha, ha... Didn't see him at GSC. Wow, he showed off to a lot of people there. I thought we at the Spingray encounter were the only ones that saw him. I wasn't sure if I was dreaming or not... That is funny. Yeah, I would have put a few bucks in for him...

SuesanJean- We didn't really use our butler service. He honestly didn't do anything for us...His name was Huda.

Ruth and Carlos were the main people that were extremely helpful.

Again, sooo pleasant. We are looking at future cruises... do you know anything about the NCL ship that goes to Bermuda? Or the one that will be doing an 8 day cruise to the eastern carribbean next year? Is it as nice as the Dawn?

I think the Majesty or the Crown goes to Bermuda, I am not sure, I will have to look at the catalog. I don't think that the full year of 2006 was published in the most recent one I have.... I know that the Spirit will be leaving out of New York for a few months.... Call NCL..

It is always a great feeling to know someone had a wonderful vacation. Most of us work hard for what we get and I just get really excited when I know someone has had a wonderful time. I guess that is why I like being a TA so much. Hope your next cruise is just a wonderful. NMNita

Yes, I guess I have a severe case of it. Believe me, I really didn't think I was going to catch it.

One funny thing was, how much I enjoyed just sailing ..the day at sea. That was the day we were worried out. It turns out, I didn't feel really trapped and really enjoyed it. Someone on this board said, they didn't cruise for the ports but rather the ship and sailing part of it. I thought it would be just the opposite. But to my suprise, I kind-of get it now. Sailing and being on the ship is just as much fun as the ports they sail to. It really suprised me!

Thanks for the kind words.
