The Jewel's Repositioning Cruise: A Pictorial Review!

Recommended Posts

Intro:

This was the Jewel's last cruise from Tampa, a one way trip to San Juan, P.R. We'd never done a repositioning cruise before. So the brief drive to Tampa with a short flight home was pretty appealing. We were originally booked in an interior cabin, but got a very cheap upgrade to a balcony room due to a big price drop. We ended up with room 7164, port side aft. My wife's parents were kind enough to drop us off at the terminal, so parking fees weren't an issue.

Embarkation:

The Port of Tampa is one of the best when it comes to crowd handling, especially the terminal that the Jewel pulls up to (#3 I believe). We were out of the car, through security, checked in and walking onto the ship within twenty minutes. The only snag was with an overzealous security officer who seemed to think that I was going to commandeer the ship with a cigar cutter. I tried to tell her that I've carried it onto every other cruise without issue, but she would hear nothing of it. Thankfully another officer quietly told her that he thought cigar cutters were okay, and she relented.

Our cabin:

Thanks to Lord Timothy spotting a big price drop while we were on Monarch's final cruise, we got a nearly-free upgrade from an interior to an (extended) balcony cabin on deck seven. The room was pretty standard, with a small sofa, closet, vanity and an extended balcony. As I've noted in other reviews, I was very happy to see that our shower had the sliding doors instead of the attack-shower-curtain. The only drawback to this room was a ledge in front of the balcony that blocks the view directly down to the water.

Thanks for the pics. We will be on JOS in December, our first RCCL cruise. From the picture of the restroom, it appears as there are no little corner shelfs on the mirror (as I have seen on other ships) to put toiletries on to. Is there other area to store items?

Thanks,

I'm so excited to see your review! We were on this cruise too. Can't wait to compare notes. I have a review thread going on, too.

The ship:

The Jewel is still in great shape for being nearly a decade old. Her crew keeps her well maintained and spotless. The Radiance Class ships are some of the brightest and best designed cruise ships ever built.

The mirrors open up to the shelves.

Yes, on that class the mirrors in the corners are actually hinged doors hiding shelves.

The Champagne Bar, also on the Centrum. Probably the best example of how nearly every area on this class has an amazing view of the sea. That connection to the sea makes the Radiance Class nearly the exact opposite to the Oasis Class ships, where one could almost forget about being at sea.

Looking forward to reading the rest. We're leaving on the Jewel on Saturday!

I am cruising on the Jewel in late October, and am so sad that Dennis won't be the CD for that cruise.

If you talk to him, tell him that the women who made him participate as a player during Quest on the Mariner (kinda sorta against his will :p) said hi!!! :D

Great pictures!! How did you take pictures with no one in them??

I like to wait until most others are off the ship on a port day. It's easier than dodging folks, and you don't get as many weird looks from people who see you taking pictures of odd things.

I have an unusual question. How long does it take to get from one end of the ship to another. Everyone keeps telling me these ships are "huge" and there is a lot of walking involved. I had foot surgery and don't do too well walking too far. I know there is going to be a lot of walking involved (in general) and am adequately stocking up on my meds, but curious just how "huge" this ship is

Officially she's 962 feet long by about 120 feet wide. There is a lot of walking, but there are 8 elevators to help with traversing decks. The walking doesn't seem to be as much of an issue on this class since everything sort of branches off the Centrum.

I think I covered most of the lower deck interiors last night, so now we'll move upstairs:

The Windjammer buffet, we never ate there this cruise. Who needs it when the Sea View is still there?
