Currency for Tipping

Recommended Posts

Wondering if you can tip in other currencies other than US dollars?

The reason for this is I am stumped as to how I would get my hands on $1, $2 & $5 notes from the US where I live, as they only deal in $50 notes or higher here..

Should I try and befriend a US citizen that may be on the same cruise prior to coming accross and ask them to bring some for me???? Seems like a hassle really.

Can we use the notes from our home country or would they be confused by that? Money is money afterall!

I look forward to your comments! :)

Cheers

You can exchange currency on the ship or you can bring a few $50 bills (US currency) and take them to either guest services or the casino and have them break them into smaller bills for you.

If you are referring to your on board gratuities with RCI for your wait staff and stateroom attendant they will be automatically added to your SeaPass each day while you are on board. (If you choose the My Time Dining option your gratuities will be prepaid when that option is selected).

Drinks purchased on board also include a 15% gratuity. Additional gratuities for bartenders or the Concierge (if you use that service) would be separate as well and you would need cash for that.

Otherwise the purser / guest services on board should be able to convert your currency for you for off ship and other incidentals.

Thanks.. I am pre-paying all tips but my question was mainly focused at if I wanted to do extra tipping.. like room service.. Things like that!

Guest services on board is a great response.. Didn't even think of that!

I gather the Casino could probably change it aswell!

Didn't think of room service - but that gratuity too can be signed for with your SeaPass card.

Enjoy your cruise!

Well, money is money but imagine if passengers gave them paper money from all over the world - it would certainly be a hassle to exchange it, don't you agree? If someone gave me a paper note from Japan or Australia or Britain or New Guinea, I wouldn't even know what it was supposed to look like or if it was fake (I am making an extreme point here). So indeed, since the currency onboard ship is US dollars, it is preferable to tip thusly. Alternatively on a Mediterranean cruise, Euros would also be well received.

Have fun.

Hi,

Rather than using PNG notes, I would withdraw say $100 form the ATM on board (yes you will get a $2.50 fee). You will then have US $100 which you can exchange in the casino for small notes.

Have a great trip.

I wish RCCL would add PNG to the top end trip!!!!!!

I don't think you can put a tip on your sea pass for room service - there is no bill to sign for room service

You are correct - my mistake. (I was thinking about the late night charge RCI adds as a charge to your SeaPass - but you are right there is no bill or delivery receipt for a tip to be added).

Cash would be the way to tip for room service. :)

Guest services is your friend.

Your question reminds me of a friend in college who was always a "few bucks short". We'd end up covering her dinner or drinks, and in exchange, she'd give stamps or subway tokens.

I would not advise that.

You can also get cash from the casino (3% fee). They charge it to your seapass account.

Raina,

They would have to be real picky on where they stopped as security here is a real problem.. There are some very nice places though and if they planned it right, would make an exciting place to visit. Living here, I can't wait to get the hell out for a break as often as I can! :)

Cheers
