steph7021 Posted July 29, 2013 #1 Share Posted July 29, 2013 Looking at prices for June 2014 out of Denver to Barcelona or London. Anyone know if the prices fluctuate much? Buy earlier or?? Right now rt Denver to London is around $1000 pp. We would then be buying other tickets as our cruise is Barcelona to Venice.
Zach1213 Posted July 29, 2013 #2 Share Posted July 29, 2013 It might go up. It might go down. Odds are much higher on the former. If you're comfortable with the price, grab it. If you think you can do better, risk it. Only you can decide what's comfortable to you. Unfortunately, nobody can tell what will happen in the future. If you do decide to book separate tickets, make sure there is lots and lots of time to allow for delays. If London to Barcelona is purchased separately from Denver to London, and you arrive in to London late, you are SOL. Nothing to protect you. Alaskanb Posted July 29, 2013 #3 Share Posted July 29, 2013 Maybe flight insurance-- but I don't know how that works with missed flights. We are also looking at Icelandair out of Denver for a cruise leaving Southampton next August. The idea of a few nights stopover in either direction is very appealing. hallasm Posted July 31, 2013 #4 Share Posted July 31, 2013 Iceland air is a good choice - nice with the break in Reykjavik. My experience is that prices always goes up for the flight (trans Atlantic) - at least for Iceland Air - I will recommend to book air as early as possible. And then allow for delays and insurance - also for airline bankruptcy - No Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Code in Europe - money lost.
Alaskanb Posted July 31, 2013 #5 Share Posted July 31, 2013 I have seen mixed comments about being able to book seats on Icelandair --does anyone know if you can do that when making the reservation?
suncityjim Posted July 31, 2013 #6 Share Posted July 31, 2013 I made a reservation on Icelandair in early July for a flight next May 2014 and was able to select the seats I wanted. No different than any other airline. Just my $0.02. Jim

Novastar Posted July 31, 2013 #8 Share Posted July 31, 2013 I booked our seats on Iceland Air in April for an October cruise - so 6 months in advance. The fares have only gone up since then. And, yes, I did get to choose our seats when the reservation was made.

There are some airlines that don't allow you to pick your coach seat until 24 hours or so ahead, unless you pay or have status.
skf Posted August 3, 2013 #10 Share Posted August 3, 2013 Icelandair fares do seem to increase as the date approaches. Strangely (or not, I guess fares have little to do with distance) I was just looking at Icelandair for another thread & found that the fare for a flight to Seattle is the same as ours to Boston. hubofhockey Posted August 4, 2013 #11 Share Posted August 4, 2013 We regularly use Icelandair out of Boston on flights to Europe. They have the best pricing. Yes, you can book your seat choice when booking flights. Prices are at their lowest when flights first become available. Layovers are free in Iceland. The airport is very user friendly and the Iceland hot dogs are great. Icelandair planes are all fairly new and comfortable.

We are planning to book DEN-LHR as soon as the return flight is available and will do a 2 night stopover on the return. Looks as though we will be able to use FF miles on United from ELP-DEN. kenish Posted August 4, 2013 #13 Share Posted August 4, 2013 Strangely (or not, I guess fares have little to do with distance) I was just looking at Icelandair for another thread & found that the fare for a flight to Seattle is the same as ours to Boston. As you comment, fares have little to do with distance and everything to do with supply and demand. A good example is the base fare from LA-Tokyo was $450 round trip in April and that was about the same fare as LA-St. Louis (ignoring taxes which aren't the airline's doing). The distances to BOS and SEA aren't as different as you think...since grade school, we were all programmed with the Mercator or other map projections which distort things, especially farther north and south...see attachment. Proud Grandparents Posted August 9, 2013 #15 Share Posted August 9, 2013 You can book your seats but I will tell you that they "sell" not give you any meals. Looking back on our flight to Denmark out of JFK I would most likely fly Icelandair again (and bring a sandwich).
skf Posted August 9, 2013 #16 Share Posted August 9, 2013 Grandparents...please do not bring your own sandwich; you'll miss one of the best sandwiches on great Icelandic bread. Worth the money. Steve

skf Posted August 11, 2013 #18 Share Posted August 11, 2013 That was from KEF to BOS. Best bread ever...makes me want to become an Icelander. (You can try their Aegil Beer but I don't think it's very good) Steve

Let's just say it's smart to either bring food on or eat at the airport. The offerings aren't much and not cheap.
