jack300s Posted July 30, 2013 #1 Share Posted July 30, 2013 Hello, Thinking of staying at the Sheraton in Weehawken after our cruise in September. Looking for advice on four people with luggage getting off the ship (pier 88)and getting to the hotel. There's a Ferry that leaves from pier 78 and docks right at the Sheraton. What's the best way to get to pier 78? Cab, bus, shuttle, walk? How far is it? BTW, its my understanding the ferry only takes 6 or 7 minutes between Weehawken and Manhattan each way, and the ferry leaves every 20 minutes until about midnight, except Sunday? Thanks Jack
njhorseman Posted July 30, 2013 #2 Share Posted July 30, 2013 It's about a half mile from Pier 88 to the ferry terminal. If you are comfortable going that distance with luggage in tow by all means you can walk it. You want to make sure to take the ferry that goes to Lincoln Harbor. Information, fares and schedules can be found here: http://www.nywaterway.com/LincolnHarborWeehawkenRoute.aspx
Post Captain Posted July 30, 2013 #3 Share Posted July 30, 2013 jack300s ~ Just to add a bit to the excellent information given by njhorseman: The Sheraton at Lincoln Harbor (Weehawken) is in an excellent location; it really couldn't be any easier to get there from Pier 88 via the ferry. If you have a manageable amount of luggage (e.g., perhaps one wheeled piece plus a carry-on), you can easily walk from Pier 88 to the 39th Street New York Waterways ferry terminal. It's nine blocks. (DH & I have done it many times. I can do it in 10 minutes or less without luggage. With luggage & Mrs Post Captain in tow, it takes a bit longer.;)) When you exit Pier 88 at ground level, go through the gate (the entrance/exit to the pier area) and turn right immediately. Do not cross 12th Avenue. Continue straight down 12th Avenue on the pedestrian walkway, parallel to the river. You'll pass the Intrepid (Pier 86) and then the Circle Line pier before you come to the ferry terminal. Incidentally, make sure you stay on the pedestrian walkway and don't inadvertently veer onto the bicycle lane. This is a popular route for cyclists (and joggers too, as well as the odd roller skater)--there's a bicycle rental shop just a few blocks south of the passenger ship terminal. Also, you may encounter tourists milling about on the sidewalk around the entrance to the Intrepid museum complex. If you want to take a little rest along the way, or just stop for a few minutes to get a look at the Intrepid, there are some benches here. This map will give you an idea of the route--the red "A" is Pier 88; the 39th Street Ferry Terminal is marked with a blue symbol. And if you scroll the map to the left, across the river, you'll see the Lincoln Harbor ferry landing (marked with an identical blue symbol) and the Sheraton right next to it: https://maps.google.com/maps?client=firefox-a&q=12th+avenue+and+48th+street+new+york+city&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x89c2584f09e94a1f:0xba473501d28fb14d,12th+Ave+%26+W+48th+St,+New+York,+NY&gl=us&ei=WuT3UY_TLNa-4AOHpoGIAQ&ved=0CCoQ8gEwAA The "street view" feature will let you see how things look on both sides of the Hudson. jack300s Posted July 30, 2013 Author #4 Share Posted July 30, 2013 Njhorseman and Post Captain, Thank very much for the great information....... I'm kicking around staying in this area to avoid the high costs of NYC hotels in September. Rooms are half of what they are in Manhattan. From what I've read its easy access to and from Manhattan. And the views of Manhattan at night look amazing...... Any other advice would be great. Again thanks so much. Jack
mommyto2girls Posted July 30, 2013 #5 Share Posted July 30, 2013 We were just down there last night for dinner...all very accurate information, but the walk is a bit much I would take a cab to the ferry from the piers. You might also want to check the pricing for Homewood Suites in Edgewater NJ another great alternative. All our friends stay there when they cruise. Love the rooms and the great breakfast It is also on the NY Waterway route it would just be Weehawken not Lincoln Harbor. It takes 7 minutes to cross the Hudson and they have shuttles to and from the Ferry on the NJ side since they are about a mile north of the ferry dock. jack300s Posted July 30, 2013 Author #6 Share Posted July 30, 2013 Thanks again everyone for your tips and advice. What a great board! Just ask a question and you get all this great info..... I did book the 4* Sheraton in Weehawken for $150 a night (4 nights). Great deal compared to the late September high NYC hotels.
138east Posted July 30, 2013 #7 Share Posted July 30, 2013 You got a great deal. The local bus will take you directly to Port Authority - does anyone know the route number? Also, if you are going to lower Manhattan, you might want to check out the light rail to Hoboken or Exchange Place and Path to the World Trade Center or vice versa. Yes, definitely a bargain for this hotel. And there are a number of different options for getting over to Manhattan by public transit--not just the ferry. NJ Transit bus #158 to/from the Port Authority bus terminal in midtown Manhattan runs through the Lincoln Harbor enclave and stops near the Sheraton: http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/bus/T1158.pdf The Lincoln Harbor Light Rail station is just a five-minute walk (if that) from the Sheraton: Trains run every few minutes to Hoboken (about an 8-minutes' ride), where the OP can change to the PATH train to either midtown Manhattan (33rd Street, with a couple of stops in Greenwich Village en route) or the World Trade Center. Incidentally, I just came across this neat little video shot on board a New York Waterways ferry going from Lincoln Harbor to 39th Street at sunrise: I'll be taking a walk through Lincoln Harbor with my camera one of these days, and I'll try to post a video or two of the immediate area on YouTube. Post Captain Posted July 31, 2013 #10 Share Posted July 31, 2013 Thank you again..Great info! So getting off the cruise ship (pier 88) on a Saturday morning. Which mode of transportation do you think is best to get to the Sheraton? You're welcome! From pier 88, the ferry from the 39th Street ferry terminal to Lincoln Harbor is definitely the fastest, shortest, most direct and most convenient way to get to the Sheraton. The following video, which I shot from a tour boat in the Hudson last month, should give you some idea of the distance from pier 88 to the ferry terminal. (Though here you're seeing it in reverse, so to speak, as we were heading south to north, not north to south as you'll be doing. Here you see the ferry terminal at the beginning of the video, then the Circle Line dock, the Intrepid (pier 86), and pier 88. The pedestrian walkway/ sidewalk from pier 88 to the ferry terminal runs right along the waterfront.) As 138east mentioned previously, the light rail & PATH train combo is the way to go when traveling between the hotel and Lower Manhattan (World Trade Center, etc.). 138east Posted July 31, 2013 #11 Share Posted July 31, 2013 Yes - and if you find yourself in lower Manhattan near the 911 memorial, it's the best way to get back to your hotel. If you plan your day, you can do a big circle and not have to retrace your route all the way uptown to return to NJ. Going in on the bus is fine - be sure to note the platform number it leaves from. Port Authority Bus Terminal is enormous - multiple sections of bus gates on at least 3 floors - so if you are returning by bus, you have to allow time to negotiate all that.
