stevea36 Posted July 30, 2013 #2 Share Posted July 30, 2013 Hi All! Will we be able to use our cell phones in Alaska (AT&T) without roaming or data charges since it is a US State? Thanks! As long as it is not on the ship while their cell tower is on you should be fine. But, I suggest, to be 100% sure call AT&T !!! Steve
Rare DrKoob Posted July 31, 2013 #3 Share Posted July 31, 2013 On four different Alaska cruises I have used my AT&T iPhone in all Alaskan ports. Warning! Do not use it in Victoria if you stop there unless you hav an international plan on your phone. The clue is to always look at the top of your phone to see what company you are connected with. If it says Cellular @ Sea, don't use it. If it says Rogers, don't use it without that international plan. Jim

pattyj 1204 Posted July 31, 2013 #5 Share Posted July 31, 2013 I got charged "roaming" fees when I used my cell phone in Ketchikan. that was 2 years ago. I was in Canada fishing and used my cell phone and had Rogers roaming and it was very pricey!!!
tlcoke Posted July 31, 2013 #6 Share Posted July 31, 2013 This was told to me when I traveled to the US Virgin Islands last year and would possibly be near the British Virgin Islands to keep from picking up an international cell signal by accident is to Turn Off Voice Roaming. This way when you are near International locations, your phone will only connect the host carrier's tower.
GreatLakes Posted August 1, 2013 #7 Share Posted August 1, 2013 As long as it is not on the ship while their cell tower is on you should be fine. But, I suggest, to be 100% sure call AT&T !!! Steve I agree. I have Verizon and used my cell phone in the various ports in Alaska. Make sure you are away from the ship so as to not pick up their tower. However, as suggested, check with your provider to make sure you will be covered. If you take the excursion on the White Pass Railway, turn your phone off as I believe you will pick up a Canadian tower and it is international coverage. Same holds true for Vancouver. Some providers will allow you to purchase Canadian coverage for 1 month.
Keith1010 Posted August 1, 2013 #8 Share Posted August 1, 2013 I wanted to note that not only will you not get hit with any roaming charges while in port in Alaska that the quality of the AT&T service was terrific which can't always be said about other cellular carriers in Alaska. Casey12 Posted August 2, 2013 #9 Share Posted August 2, 2013 AT&T has better coverage in Alaska compared to Verizon. You will be fine. Just make sure that you turn your cell off when on the ship.
AkSusan Posted August 2, 2013 #10 Share Posted August 2, 2013 AT&T is one of the main providers here, and, Verizon just moved in, but, so far is only offering data services, but, I figure by next summer, they should be doing phone too! Susan in Anchorage :)
PennyAgain Posted August 2, 2013 #11 Share Posted August 2, 2013 Check the coverage you pay for on your own ATT plan. Verify what coverage your own phone has. There are some very cheap ATT plans sold at discount stores that do not cover calls to Alaska or from Alaska at no additional charge.
