138east Posted July 31, 2013 #2 Share Posted July 31, 2013 Where does your mother live and where would she want to sail from? Is she looking for a pre Christmas cruise? Has she cruised before? Does she use the Internet so she can join roll calls? What kind of cabin does she require - inside, OV, or balcony?
mfeenker Posted July 31, 2013 #3 Share Posted July 31, 2013 Your best bet would be to do a cruise line search and start narrowing your picks keep checking your choices for price drops. Go to the Cruise Critic roll calls for the cruises you have an interest in booking and see how active the thread is and you will also get price drop alerts from others on the cruise. The NCL Epic has single rooms. If your mother wishes to be part of a group search for single cruises.
josephml1 Posted August 1, 2013 Author #4 Share Posted August 1, 2013 Hello and thanks for your help. She will like to cruise to the Caribbean from Miami, FL, Houston, Galveston and Mexican Caribbean from LA or SD. I am looking for a friendly cruise line for solo passengers with not a lot of surcharges for single passenger. She is looking for an OV or balcony, or single room. Thanks again. mfeenker Posted August 1, 2013 #5 Share Posted August 1, 2013 The dreaded single supplement is the bain of the single cruiser. There are very few ships with single cabins, I suggest finding a Travel Agent and let them do the research. Check with more than one or two TA's til you find one that really wants your business. If your mother would consider sharing a room them search for singles cruises as they will find a roommate match thus no supplement. Don't forget about New Orleans, Ft Lauderdale or Port Canaveral departure ports. You may even find a good price on a ship out of San Juan, PR. Cruisercl Posted August 1, 2013 #6 Share Posted August 1, 2013 Hi, Does your mom connect with others on her own? IMO a good part of cruising and traveling solo is either totally enjoying the cruise on your own or being a bit of a social person and meeting others whereever you are on the cruise. It depends on what her expectations are. What does she think; does she get to weigh in here? Maybe this is a surprise for her but then you may need to think about these things. :)
haikou Posted August 1, 2013 #7 Share Posted August 1, 2013 In non penthouse staterooms, the ss fee is only 25-25% over the double/per person fare.By the time you pay the double(200%) single supplement fee of most other cruise lines, many of you could afford to sail Crystal, the highest rated mid size cruise line in the world! :)

There was 1 that was in my pricepoint.......all the others? Way outside of my range. Even with the SS? Celebrity has always been within my range and I am very happy with their product. zoncom Posted August 3, 2013 #9 Share Posted August 3, 2013 The first 10 days or so are lowest priced weeks of year.Always good weather in Caribbean. Mexico scares me as a single female. Has she cruised before? Just get on Email lists on big discounters for a Dec. cruise. Celebrity Xciting deals for great deals 1-2 mos. out. calliopecruiser Posted August 3, 2013 #10 Share Posted August 3, 2013 Hello I am looking for a Solo cruise for my mother (65 years) to the Caribbean in December but I do not know where to begin. Please help me:eek: What cruise line I need to choose for the best price for a solo cruiser (I see that many cruise lines duplicate the price for solo cruiser) Help me with choices about a good price and good cruise line for solo cruisers. thank you all:D If you're looking for the best price for a solo cruiser, you'd do best to find a good sale and for that, a travel agent can be your best friend. If you're looking for the best value for a solo cruiser, my recommendation would be Crystal, which offers supreme service and amenities for as low as a 25% supplement (window cabin) on every cruise they make, so no need to limit your choices to sale dates only. I also think Crystal treats solo passengers well, including Ambassador Hosts to dance with unaccompanied ladies.
zoncom Posted August 3, 2013 #11 Share Posted August 3, 2013 I should say first 10 days DEC are lowest. I have cruised solo on Celebrity. Princess, NCL and Oceania. All treated me beautifully. I would avoid Holidays which tend to be families mainly.I would also not feel comfortable on HAL; was treated poorly by passengers when traveling with my BF. Several even said-You are NOT married? Powriv Posted August 4, 2013 #12 Share Posted August 4, 2013 NCL Epic has studio cabins just perfect size for single people. It sails out of Miami and till Feb will sail Eastern Caribbean route
Cruzin-K Posted August 4, 2013 #13 Share Posted August 4, 2013 I like Princess for solo travel because the single supplement tends to be a bit lower than most other cruise lines (for inside and ocean view cabins, not balconies). Also, Princess gives double loyalty points when you sail solo. I've been on three Princess cruises, but have four points because the first cruise with them was by myself. calliopecruiser Posted August 4, 2013 #14 Share Posted August 4, 2013 NCL Epic has studio cabins just perfect size for single people. Not this single person - I'd hate to travel in a cabin that small.
jollyjones Posted August 6, 2013 #15 Share Posted August 6, 2013 Not this single person - I'd hate to travel in a cabin that small. Nor are they particularly cheap. I cruise solo all the while and I like Princess - the SS is usually about 65% for inside and ocean view cabins so the price is right. Also, there are lots of options for dining and entertainment - plenty of opportunities for either relaxing on your own (I particularly enjoy sitting in the Piazza sipping a drink and listening to the musicians), or joining in with others, e.g. you can sit with others at meals in the MDR, or (my favourite) join in a team for trivia. josephml1 Posted August 10, 2013 Author #16 Share Posted August 10, 2013 I think the best option will be Cristal so she do not pay the extra fees as other cruise lines... or maybe NCL on a studio cabin. Thank you all for all the help and advice. very useful.
Dancer Bob Posted August 10, 2013 #17 Share Posted August 10, 2013 I found Crystal to be outrageously expensive for all they delivered. As for "dancing", on what was supposed to be a ballroom cruise, the standards were terribly low.
LandlockedCruiser01 Posted August 10, 2013 #18 Share Posted August 10, 2013 A lot has been said about the cruise lines' pricing and policies. But here's something that hasn't been said much on this thread so far: the onboard atmosphere. That is, how comfortably a solo can fit in among the more commonly encountered couples, families, and groups. A cruise line can offer a 0% or even a negative solo supplement (i.e. a solo discount), but it'll mean nothing if the cruise line and/or the fellow passengers make a solo feel like an outcast. Case in point: I thought that Carnival has a very solo-friendly onboard atmosphere, despite their horrendous solo pricing: 200% across-the-board solo supplement, double deposit for solos, etc. It was worth the price I paid, considering how Carnival isn't that expensive to being with. The crew didn't treat me any differently than non-solos; I was neither discriminated not given extra attention. The lively, party-like atmosphere (despite the efforts to remake itself into a poor man's Disney Cruise Line) made it easy to meet new people. Most of the friends I made were not solos, but they "adopted" me as an equal. Let's hear more contributions about the solo-friendliness of other cruise lines' onboard atmosphere. Plenty has been said about their pricing and policies already.
zoncom Posted August 10, 2013 #19 Share Posted August 10, 2013 Joseph, I see you have been on all the main lines except Celebrity. Where do you think she fits best? Shes your Mother. We are all strangers to her. Two agencies do hosted singles cruises. Do a search. One has just a few cabins ,shared, on Princess, out of FtL. $864 inside. A bargain. Over 40 cruise.
