Brochquine Posted August 3, 2013 #1 Share Posted August 3, 2013 Can anyone advise what the situation is with the kids programme onboard the spirit. We are cruising for the first time in December with our daughter who will be 2 1/2 yrs and we would like to know of there will be an indoor space for us to play with her. I wouldn't leave her alone at the clubs as I think she is too young but I would of liked to be able to take her inside to play if the weather is not very good. Any info would be greatly appreciated. We have cruised quite a bit ourselves but not since we had our little girl. Hope we have made the right decision !!

GORDONCHICK Posted August 4, 2013 #4 Share Posted August 4, 2013 NCL's kids' program only takes 3yos and older (and they must be potty trained as well) now. However, they do have play hours for younger children where a parent is required to stay with their child. If you go to the kids' club once you board, they should have a sheet that will tell you when those play times are. NCL used to take 2yos, but that changed a year or two ago. They do have mommy, daddy & me type activities in the kids club at certain times throughout the cruise. Otherwise, bring plenty to do to entertain her in your cabin. :)
kcwingwalker Posted August 5, 2013 #6 Share Posted August 5, 2013 In the past on this board posters have mentioned bringing along a blow up pool for a toddler. Not sure if this is still an option, but your little one might enjoy some splash time.
mitsugirly Posted August 5, 2013 #7 Share Posted August 5, 2013 You didn't mention if she is potty trained or not. So I will post this information just in case she is. There's a kids pool (big area) across the back of the ship. It has 2 water slides and water squirting everywhere. Now obviously she is not old enough to do the water slides or anything, but they do have this ship there and you can climb up there and squirt the water onto people down below. It's like a little tunnel thing to crawl in. Pool I'm referring to: The tunnels in the ship area: Now also right next to this pool is a really small pool (when I say "small" I mean not deep at all). If you also look in the picture above, you can see this netting behind here. There is a door there and you can go in to this area. It's a little play area for children. As others have mentioned, they have family time with the kids club that you and your little one can participate in. Have fun. We loved the Spirit. She is a unique ship! garycarla Posted August 5, 2013 #8 Share Posted August 5, 2013 I see that blow up pool option posted. Personally I do not get it. Would you take a pool to grandmas or ______ name a city? It takes packing and cabin room. It would be a hassle to fill and empty. The child does expect to be in a pool just because they are on a ship? I agree with you and would have not considered it for my children when they were young (actually they would be at Grandma's). But it has been done on NCL and the those that posted about it felt it was worth the hassle and their little one was happy.
shark with a laser Posted August 6, 2013 #10 Share Posted August 6, 2013 I see that blow up pool option posted. Personally I do not get it. Would you take a pool to grandmas or ______ name a city? It takes packing and cabin room. It would be a hassle to fill and empty. The child does expect to be in a pool just because they are on a ship? A small inflatable pool costs about $6 and takes up very little luggage space. The one we had took about 5 minutes to blow up, and we used the bathroom waste can to fill it, all of 3 or 4 trips. It was so little effort to blow up that we deflated it when not in use. Our toddler loves the water and was overjoyed to play in it on our balcony. To drain, just step on the side and let the water run into the drain along the edge of the balcony. I've heard of people taking the pools to the pool deck and borrowing pitchers from the bar to fill them and then emptying them into the drainage channels that cross the deck. ScotsTravelady Posted August 6, 2013 #11 Share Posted August 6, 2013 I was on the Spirit last Dec, over Xmas, and we saw a family told to remove their blow-up paddling pool for their baby from the deck. The Spirit is not that spacious and people were complaining. You could use in your balcony if you have one. The children's pool aft of the ship is nice but you will not be allowed to use this or the main pool unless your daughter is potty trained. They do not allow 'swimming nappies'. Having said that, in Dec the Atlantic breeze around Madeira and the Canaries can make it a bit nippy for swimming, even for us Scots. Take plenty of things to keep your daughter amused as at that age she may get bored easily. The Spirit is a lovely ship and I'll be back on her again this Dec. You'll likely find a very international passenger list on the sailing in Dec and that will make a fun sailing.
Brochquine Posted August 7, 2013 Author #12 Share Posted August 7, 2013 Thanks for the info, we are in the process of potty training now so hopefully by December we will be fine. How was the weather in December, I've no idea what to bring ! We Stay up in the north east of Scotland so hopefully we will cope with the wind as we are used to it blowing a gale ! IluvZ Posted August 8, 2013 #13 Share Posted August 8, 2013 The Spirit staff is always really great with kids too. And the kids play area, on the side of the Kids pool is very sheltered from the wind. In fact, when we sailed her in the Carribean the water was always HOT as was the play area. You should be able to use it even on cool days.

We have cruised twice now in December and the weather has always been nice down in the Caribbean. It has definitely been hot enough to swim and wear shorts the entire time. Of course, mother nature is weird some times so you never know. Since we live in a "cold/snow" state in the winter, we always have to pack for the cold when we are leaving & returning. So, we have our "back-up" clothes that we brought with us as well...just in case the weather gets nippy. We haven't had to use them yet. Next up...another December cruise coming up in 4 months. :D
Brochquine Posted August 8, 2013 Author #15 Share Posted August 8, 2013 The itinerary we are going on sails out of barcelona, calling at Casablanca, Madeira, lanzarote and malaga. We have done a similar itinerary in November and it was a bit hit and miss even then so I'm worried December will be cold and rainy.
