synet165 Posted August 4, 2013 #1 Share Posted August 4, 2013 We are familiar with the fairly new regulation that limits wine to one bottle per passenger at embarkation. We never bring wine with us because we have to fly from NYC to a distant port. But, this October we will be sailing from Brooklyn, nd since we are not flying we were wondering if we could bring boxed wine aboard with us? Is there a size limit? Since finding boxed wine isn't easy in Manhattan, we would like to know the answer to this question. There is no way that we can manage glass bottles and we thought that a box would do. Thanks synet165
f-mattox Posted August 4, 2013 #2 Share Posted August 4, 2013 I think they are pretty specific about two 750 ml bottles. I've never seen a box that small but if you know of one I suppose it would be okay. I don't quite understand your statement that there's no way you could manage glass bottles--especially if you don't have to fly. I would just wrap them in bubble wrap and put them in my carry-on. MicCanberra Posted August 4, 2013 #3 Share Posted August 4, 2013 There are also products on the market called wine diapers. http://www.winediaper.com/ :D
paul929207 Posted August 4, 2013 #4 Share Posted August 4, 2013 Bottles must be 750 ml or smaller. Not sure if boxes are even allowed, but at best they would have to meet the size requirements
NauticalNelle Posted August 4, 2013 #5 Share Posted August 4, 2013 I have always traveled with a 3L box of wine. I have cruised 23 times and never had a problem. I have a cruise coming up next week that leaves out of Southampton. I think this will be the first cruise after the so called crack down. We shall see what happens. I have cruised out of Brooklyn many times and never had a problem there. I put the box in my checked luggage.

synet165 Posted August 4, 2013 Author #7 Share Posted August 4, 2013 Thanks for all your help. I had a accident last year and at times I walk with a cane, so bottles are hard for me to manage even if I don't fly. synet165
GweninTX Posted August 4, 2013 #8 Share Posted August 4, 2013 On the Golden on 4/24 box wine was confiscated. They insist on 750 ml bottles now - I use the wine diapers and they are perfect for flying!
Mekamax Posted August 4, 2013 #9 Share Posted August 4, 2013 I brought a "box" wine that was really 2/3 the size of a 750 ml bottle. They do sell them. They are the equivalent to about 3 glasses (instead of 4). A lot lighter and easier to handle. On Carnival they have been cracking down for years and the main security x-ray lady gave me a hard time as it was cardboard and I said so it is under what you consider a 750 ml bottle and sealed. And she was not nice but I stood my ground and argued with her and the main security guy came over and gave her a look and waved us through. :D:p I would try it if you can find them as they were very handy and very light and a lot easier than glass. The Golden has a food and beverage officer who would be better suited to a prison camp, the sooner Princess fire him the better for passengers and the crew

magandy Posted August 4, 2013 #14 Share Posted August 4, 2013 People need to think what they put on this site, it is not only read by cruisers but also by the cruise companies. Be sensible.
RNRcruisers Posted August 4, 2013 #15 Share Posted August 4, 2013 We brought a box on board the Star in June. It was a small box, the size of 2 bottles so perfect for the two of us. It was in our checked luggage and we had no problems.

Did you maybe mean a larger size box? :)

It's Spanish (of course) and may not be the type you prefer. Worth a look! Kay

Cruisin' Chick Posted August 5, 2013 #25 Share Posted August 5, 2013 i have tasted some of that boxed wine and thought it was pretty bad. Not worth trying to smuggle it onboard. I think many of the posters are talking about bringing the box legitimately, and not smuggling. We got a smaller box o'wine than usual (which is fine, because I'm not much of a drinker) and put it in our plastic crate o'drinks (mostly Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper and Sobe) for our cruise last December. Don't know if this was before the crackdown. I believe the total was less than the total allowance for two of us.
