Upgrade at the pier

we are going on the liberty in December, anyone ever heard of upgrade fairy or upgrade at pier with the pursor,

Hi duck. Ships typically sail full, so if you wait until you arrive at the port to try to snag an upgrade, you will likely be disappointed. The upsell fairy may call you before you sail, and normally that will happen after final payment date if it happens at all, and you may be able to pay a reduced rate for an upgrade at that time. Also, if you see prices drop for your cruise, you may call and ask about an upgrade before final payment, assuming that you didn't book an early saver fare. If you did book an early saver fare, you can act on price drops continuing after final payment date which could get you an upgrade.

So best advice is, watch prices for your cruise, and if you see a price you are willing to pay for an upgraded cabin, call and book it.

Hope you have a great cruise!

As far as I know, it doesn't happen at the pier anymore. There is a person in Miami whose job it is to call around the day of the cruise when there are cancellations or empty cabins and offer complimentary upgrades to loyalty guests and those with special occasions. We got a call for one in June on the way to the port and they let us upgrade both of our cabins.

We normally watch for price drops and upgrade that way.

I received an free upgrade from a !A cabin to an 8J balcony last March at the pier without asking for it. Must have been a very late cancellation and as a diamond member I received the upgrade. They also had already booked my original cabin to another guest since I had to retrieve my luggage and the guests had arrived just as I came down to the other cabin. I had no clue until I checked in.

We have never requested or sought an upgrade, but we have arrived at check in and been given an upgrade. Actually 1 time it happened at check in when the port employee could not find ours keys and came back with the news we had been upgraded. By the way our 1 checked bag was delivered to our original stateroom, not the upgraded one. We kept checking because even though we were assurred the change would be handled , it was not.

Another time we checked in and the check in computers were down. They had to hand write our docs. After we got to the cabin, and of course unpacked, the phone rang and we were informed that we should have been upgraded at check in but were not because of the computer snafu. So we packed up and went to the new room.

This happened to us on our second cruise. We never even realized it until our key would not open the door! We went down to Guest Services to complain, only to be find out, somewhat sheepishly, I might add, that we now had an aft balcony! We also had to go retrieve our luggage, as they had the original tags. This was 10 years ago - hasn't happened since! But we did get hooked on aft balconies because of it. :)

It has only happened to me 1 time. I had booked a porthole cabin on the Fascination. When I arrived to check in, I was told my cabin had been moved. I was a little worried, since my luggage had already been checked in, and I had luggage tags with the PT room number. Believe it or not, I was moved to a Suite on the Empress deck. The person who had reserved the room couldn't go at the last minute. I felt bad for her, since I found Spa reservations waiting for her, as well as a welcome aboard basket. I enjoyed the suite, but felt a little sad for the person who couldn't go. By the way, my luggage eventually made it's way to my cabin, but it was after I asked about 2 or 3 times.

We received an upgrade on board. When we originally went to open our cabin, two people were already inside, said it was their cabin and had already unpacked. We both had the same keys and cabin assignment. Guest Services upgraded us to a better cabin. Our luggage never showed up, so later that evening I went to the old cabin, and presto - there's our luggage sitting out in the hall.

But as a general rule, yeah - no upgrades aboard.

Only two free upgrades I ever got, and they were both at the pier

were the (only two) cruises on Ocean Village Two

(a now-defunct UK line that once belonged to Carnival Corp. - Yr. 2008).

Carnival Cruises does not readily give free upgrades, simply because demand outstrips supply.

And can you blame them? ;)

Time to rename the Upgrade Fairy the Upgrade Pusher. Give 'em the first taste free then reel them in when they can't help themselves. :D
