Thanks to RCCI for gracious response

Recommended Posts

Some members may have read my post back in December 2012 concerning our late cancellation of a New Year's cruise due to my wife's unforseen diagnosis of cancer. I had foolishly neglected to purchase cancellation insurance.

I wrote to Mr. Adam Goldstein, CEO of RCCI. I explained our situation and asked whether it would be possible to obtain a refund or credit. Mr. Goldstein had one of his very kind assistants contact us and confirm all the details.

In spite of the fact that we were well past the eligible date for any refund and there was no obligation for them to do so, RCCI sent us future cruise certificates for the fares we had paid. (They also refunded all taxes and fees, as is their policy with any cancellation.)

My wife and family and I would like to publicly thank Mr. Goldstein and RCCI for dealing compassionately with us. Since February this year, my wife has had four surgeries to remove four different primary cancers. As far as we know, she is now cancer free. We have booked a cruise with Royal Caribbean for March 2014 and look forward to a great time in the Caribbean.

Thank you, Mr. Goldstein and RCCI.

A special thanks to Mr. Adam Goldstein. Another confirmation of why we are now loyal to Royal Caribbean.

Same thing happened to us last August. We had a cruise from Hawaii to Sydney booked and I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Our travel agent worked with RCCL and they graciously let us move our cruise from last Sept. to March 2014. We will forever be thankful and loyal to Royal!

This very great to hear (especially about your wife being well), but I hope you posting this here doesn't backfire on RCI since now all the Cruise Critic crowd will think this is a "new policy"...

Seriously... congratulations on both counts and I hope your cruise is fantastic.

Our sincere thanks to all who have posted their good wishes. We are touched by and greatly appreciate the sincere care being expressed. No doubt many of you have been through health challenges and crises of your own, so you well understand what it's like.

To the point about our story possibly fostering carelessness, or setting RCCI up for a flood of awkward hardship cases: I did give this some thought. So perhaps I should balance our thanks with the following emphatic advice:

Be wise, and buy cancellation insurance! Unexpected things do happen and it's better to be safe than sorry! The kindness of strangers is a wonderful thing to experience, but do not take it for granted!

I for one have learned my lesson.

Thanks again everyone. Happy cruising!

Very happy for your Wife and yourself.

We started with RCL in 1999 and never had a reason to look elsewhere. Stories like yours make it easy to continue to be Loyal to Royal.
